03 March - Animation Director at Blink Ink and Mighty Nice Alex Grigg.
Today we had a Tuesday Talk with Alex Grigg, who is an award winning Australian animation director and designer based in London. He is working for Blink Ink and Mighty Nice now. and works both 2D and 3D animation. He showed us many animations that he made before.
vimeo
This animation is inspired by a series of great Australian Bush fantasy books called Bottersnikes and Gumbles. The animation can perfectly match the rhythm of the background music and the brushes used in the first part are really artistic, I love them!
vimeo
vimeo
More of is animation are related to business, and I love how the scene use spatial transformation to make brand promotion interesting.
This great artist make me reflect about how I would like to focus on my animation career in the future.

18 February - Author and artist working across books and games Viviane Schwarz
(https://www.vivianeschwarz.co.uk/)
This week we had special Tuesday Talk with author and artist Viviane Schwarz. The illustration animation class have been working on a game design project with her recently, so was really useful for us assist to her talk.
Viviane work’s are game design and children’s book making, so she showed us some of her works which are really creative, they are more like interactive books and not just fairy tail for children.
youtube
First she showed a book called ‘There Are Cats in This Book’. I think this video  it is really a good and dynamic way to present a book and play with voices for the children!
Tumblr media
She also wrote a book called ‘Board Games to Create and Play’ which help people to invent board games with their friends and family and this was useful for the project that we were doing.
Tumblr media
(The Treasure Maze, a game played in a 200m roll of corrugated cardboard)
youtube
She also show us some interactive game she made.
In conclusion, this Tuesday Talk is quite helpful for us to develop our board game design project.

28 January - Director of the Factual Animation Film Festival Daniel Murtha & Film Maker / Producer Alex Widdowson.
Tumblr media
(Talk PDF by Daniel Murtha and Alex Widdowson)
This Tuesday we had a fantastic Tuesday Talk from Daniel Murtha and Alex Widdowson, who are the directors of the Factual Animation Film Festival. They talk about the  themes and processes of documentary animation and shared a lot of examples during the talk, wich was useful for our assigments of this term.
Tumblr media
The Documentary Triangle not only makes the key words of documentary animation simple and clear, but also categorizes all of the examples.
1. Graphically depicting a large or abstract concept
2. Clearing away superfluous noise, allowing pure focus on subject
3. Visualising events for which there is no footage
4. Hiding information (identities of interviewees)
5. Encouraging interviewee openness
6. Using of visual metaphor
vimeo
This is just one of the other example of documentary animation they cit, this one was really interesting and funny(in it’s ways) and after listening to their talk I really hope I can have the opportunity to try this kind of animation in the future.

14 January - Animated film maker and educator Pete Millard.
Tuesday Talks for the new term is with one of our tutor Pete Millard. I was so happy as I’m really into Animation. Also I had seen Pete’s animations before in Walk the Walk. His animation style is bizarre and funny!
Tumblr media
vimeo
(Unhappy Happy by Peter M.)
As Pete describes, “he is a British person from the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire England. He had made several independent animated short films that have been screened and awarded at short film festivals all around the world” , also he like do sculptures and sounds pieces.
Not only that, Pete is also a person who is good at finding inspiration in daily life. He likes jazz music, Pink Floyd- Piper at the gates of dawn and Ornette Coleman influenced his work.
As said before Peter is good with the sound design of his animation, as you can ear from it’s video.
vimeo
He used to be a vegetarian, pigs used to be his friends, but now he eats them quite a lot. It’s very interesting that he also used this experience to creat an animation called “This is pig meat”!
In conclusion, I think the main idea of this lecture is how to play with audiences. Whether we choose to be illustrators or animators in the future, we should learn to consider the feeling of audiences and convey the right feeling that we want to transmit.

12 November - Illustrator and Printmaker Johnny Hannah.
Tumblr media
The Tuesday Talk of last week was really interesting as it comes the great printmaker and Illustrator Johnny Hannah.
Tumblr media
(Painting featuring on the cover of James Yorkston’s album The Route to the Harmonium)
Reason: I really like the texts and match with the illustration.
He showed us tons of his illustrations and print works. His creative field is very extensive, including magazines, newspapers, stamps, book covers and posters. I really like the colours and compositions in his works even if it’s not really my style or way to represent things.

Tumblr media
(landscape by Charlotte A)

25 October - Oliver Macdonald Oulds
Tumblr media
This week we didn’t have Tuesday Talk, but there were two artists who came to give us two fantastic talks, both of them are graduates from Illustration Animation in Kingston University and then studied in the Royal Drawing School.
Our Friday classes are dedicated on the Research, so we focus on this topic like drawings from observation and drawings from memory.
Tumblr media
(My drawings from my notebook)
I personally think that he is one of the best artist we saw during these lessons, his color are beautiful, also the atmosphere and his style is unique, you can see that he know how to draw a human body as well a natural or architectonique landscape.
Tumblr media
(London fields by Oliver M.)
He show us some of his travel scketchbook, where he portraied different people with different media, was amazing!
Tumblr media
(Slide guitar practice with Tom Kitson by Oliver M.)
Reason: as I have a lot of musicians friends and I draw them as well, I was stunned when I saw this work, I love the watercolors and the composition itself.
Tumblr media
( Joe on the drums by Oliver M.)
Reason: I know how much is difficult portait a drummer, a lot. He portrayed that energy with colors, I found them amazing.
Another thing that was very interesting was that he can draw himself in the memory and make different drawings of the same place. He told us he drew in the park next to his company during lunch time for a long time and that some of them are the same tree in different seasons using different materials, so it reminds me of Monet work’s like “Rouen Cathedral”.

Tumblr media
(Performance drawing by Laura)
Reason: the image and colors used are fun!
Tumblr media
(Women's Football movement in London)
Reason: I like the colors and the movement of the figures is well rapresented.

The whole lecture was really interesting!

1 October- Illustator Joey Yu
Tumblr media
The first TUESDAY TALK we had in Kingston University was about the illustrator Joey Yu (as well an ex Kingston Uni student’s).As I enroll late in my illustration/ animation course I didn’t know that I was going to do a Tuesday talk every two weeks, everything was so new and and a bit confusing when I start, but when Joey start to talk I was literally enchanted by her Art and passion for it.
Tumblr media
(presentation sketch made by myself that day)
She entroduced her method of work, showing us some of her illustration and an animation she made with other colleague, was very interesting and usefull as we are of the first year of the course. Everything was clear and simple.
She get inspiration from movies and travelling, some movies like
-Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013)
-Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)
-Little Forest (2018)
Tumblr media
(Summer by Joey Yu)
Reason: I think that the main color (peach) suit with the atmosphere of the scene she wants to tell, it makes me feel relaxed and I can feel  the summer by this line.
At the end of the talk, the clear message was that us anspirant illustrator should always have a SKETCHBOOK in our hands or bags, as is reall important to capture small moments of the life, trhought drawings, words, colors.
Tumblr media
(Two black coffee drinkers)
Reason: I really like the composition and the scketcht style of this work.
Joey Yu answered a lot of questions that help us to go throught the first year, that should be full of creativity and exploration.
