So I just now learned about Stagecoach Mary and how have I never heard of this absolute LEGEND of a woman before

She was born a slave and freed when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued (she was about 30)

She was about six feet tall and 200 pounds and once she was free she decided she’d never take shit from anyone ever again

When one of her close friends, a nun by the name of Mother Amadeus, became ill with pneumonia at her convent in Montana, Mary headed alone into the frontier to nurse Mother Amadeus back to health

After Mother Amadeus recovered, she gave Mary a job as the foreman of the convent. She repaired buildings, took care of chickens, made the long and dangerous journeys into town for supplies, and did other odd jobs.

She could drink most men under the table, and one saloon offered five bucks and a free shot of whiskey to any man who could take a punch to the face from Mary and remain standing. 

She was once said by a local paper to have broken more noses than anyone else in Montana

She was outspokenly Republican, which at this time was the liberal party in America, and would get into political debates with the more conservative townsfolk

One time a man insulted her outside the saloon so hit him in the face with a rock, and only stopped when other cowboys held her back.

On one supply run into town, her wagon overturned and the horses fled. Mary spent all night single-handedly fending off a pack of wolves with her guns before she righted the heavy wagon by herself and tracked down the spooked horses. The only thing lost in the accident was a jar of molasses.

She lost her job at the convent when she got into a gunfight with a male employee who did not want to take orders from a black woman. She reportedly shot him in the ass, which angered the local bishop.

After losing her convent job, Mary spent a brief time running a restaurant, where she welcomed and served all comers

When a job for a mail carrier opened at the local US Post Office, Mary got the job because she managed to hitch six horses to a wagon faster than any of the male candidates

She was sixty at the time

This made her the first black woman mail carrier, and the second woman mail carrier in US history

When the snows were too deep for the horses to manage the long and dangerous delivery routes, Mary would strap on snowshoes, put the bags of mail on her shoulders, and do it herself

At one point she apparently had a pet eagle????

She only retired from the mail route when she was about 70 years old, and instead made a quieter living by babysitting and running a laundry business in the town of Cascade

She was a huge baseball fan and often gave the local team a big bouquet of flowers from her garden

The people of Cascade loved Mary so much that they closed the schools annually on her birthday

When a law was passed in Montana that forbade women from drinking in saloons, the mayor of Cascade granted Mary an exemption. 

When her house burned down, the whole town got together to help her build a new one

She continued drinking, fighting, and going to baseball games until she died of liver failure at 82 in 1914

i got to season 6 of my supernatural rewatch and i just gotta say sams costume design is so on point this season. they do such a good job at balancing sams soft puppy dog look and the sharpness from his lack of soul it hits so hard.

His shirts are more oversized than they usually are and are usually pushed up at the sleeves which makes him look a lot younger than he has the past few seasons but then he wears these big work jackets that, while theyre often warm tones, feel sharp and guarded. his Carhartt jacket does this especially well! its darker and we havent seen him wear it before, but the cut of it and how he usually wears it half-zipped instantly reminds me of sams season one Carhartt hooded jacket. its sam, but its unfamiliar. compared to seasons 3-5, his outfits as well as his hair make him look younger and more innocent than he has in years, which only makes the scenes where he gets dangerously focused in on a hunt all the more jarring and obviously not sam. he also wears cooler colors than he does in season 5 or 7. i remember him wearing a lot of warmer brown tones in 7 that i really liked, especially since in that season and beyond he adapts a kind of softness that an object gets when it has been used a lot. all his sharp edges have been rounded out from being dropped and shoved carelessly into bags. hes like the old flannels he wears in season 7 versus the newer button downs and jackets he wears in 6.

jared, the designers, and writers did a good job with soulless sam. ill do a whole analysis on him after i get through the season but for now i want to share some design thoughts:)

"when did supernatural go downhill" is the wrong question to be asking because supernatural does not exist on an XY axis where it can go 'up' or 'down' hill, it exists in a plane that extends towards and away from the audience at various times based on writing, plots, and whether or not the gay angel is there. but at no point does it move up or down hill.

season 4 dean is like “i’m fighting demons” and the whole time the demons are just bisexuality. meanwhile season 4 sam is like “i’m fighting demons” and they’re real and he’s drinking their blood

Ive been going back to my home fandom by rewatching supernatural and man has it brought up A LOT of feelings and thoughts for me. I want to talk through my interpretation of a lot of the stuff ive noticed since i started the rewatch (especially now that i am much better at story analysis) even though its 2025 and this will be a long as rambling post no one will want to read

Ok. starting out i want to say i really love all the characters and while they are flawed i feel that all members of team free will are good people who love each other. i feel like this fandom has a problem where people who very casually watch the show are very judgemental of the team and for me that feels bad to read but thats why tags exist lol. I think Sam is very kind and empathetic! he has made mistakes but a bit of empathy and critical thinking paints him much more sympathetically than the show characters/fandom does. Dean is criticized less but i still want to say that he is an incredibly intelligent and strong character. His actions are always driven by love and he holds on in impossible situations!! everyone agrees cas is great i feel but i gotta compliment him anyways and say hes a really sweet and capable character. i just gotta get it out of my system because the villains (and protagonists) in the show criticize the team a lot and im constantly talking to the people i watch with why we think they are all fundamentally GOOD people.

its a show about love- familial, platonic, romantic, you chose. its about love. and on this blog its going to be fan engagement about love as well:) good and silly vibes here everyone

so anyways, i know hes not everyones favorite but please don't go after sam on this blog im so tired of seeing fans refuse to empathize with him:[ yes s4 was a mess for him, but please stop making addictions out to be inherently evil those of you who are(& you know who u r). it sucks cmon guys. hes always trying his best, the reason he starts in the first place is because he realizes he can kill demons without hurting the victim. he's hurting a lot in these seasons and trying desperately to help people after being powerless to save dean, a feeling he's felt his whole life. yes, its a mistake, but thats it. he's still a good person and character in my eyes. and dean is also hurting a lot in those seasons of course hes going to have a hard time forgiving and forgetting what he views as a huge breach of trust from the person he needed the most!! all that is to say that guys please dont be mean to my blorbos im very attached to them T-T

dean is very much bi to me! thats kinda it for him i have a lot more hc but thats my only queer one

i always saw a very trans story line with sam and saw a lot of trans traits in him that i found relatable before i even came out to myself. for me he is a demi boy and a romance/sex positive aroace. romance has never been the most important thing to him really, its always something that follows his want for a close relationship and partnership. i think he and cas' relationship is more meaningfully to him than most if his romantic relationships in the show. team free will are his people and his family in a way no one else really is- and he's perfectly ok with that. i like the sabriel ship but more in a qpr way so that them and destiel can go on cute double dates:)

cas is so much easier to break down for me hes loosely pan and non-binary. he just does what he wants and prefers not to stick that closely to labels.

also also holy moly am i struggling through s3-5. i usually rewatch s6-9 the most and i am finding the soul crushing hopelessness and conflict so stressful. im very excited to get through to what i feel like is the closest thing to a healing arc we get for the brothers in the show- it mostly focuses on sam receiving support for his mental health and dean reconnecting with his emotions after going into a survival based shut down in s5. even though the world was still ending it focused a lot on how the brothers care about and support each other in whatever way they know how to!

im very happy to be returning to one of my favorite shows of all time after so long trying not to like it. hope to find some more enjoyers even in the year 2025 ( i kno:l tbh tho not sorry:/)

i really love a lot of the themes in white collar. like im sure they werent thinking 'hey lets write a story with themes around disability and some adults needing caretakers focusing on mental health and addiction especially how adults with mental disabilities or histories of trauma are at higher risk of addiction and relapse and normalize supporting those individuals and their road to recovery. throughout that journey giving the person unconditional love while they make mistakes and not faulting them as a person or discarding them as a strong and intellectual person' BUT THEY DID AND THEY DID IT WELL. they never even jab at neal in ways shows that try to explore these themes do. they never dismiss neals trauma by calling them daddy issues or mommy issues they say more explicitly that neal had a unstable home environment and needs help relearning base instincts taught to him. THEY DONT BLAME AND HUMILIATE HIM FOR WHAT HIS PARENTS WERE LIKE THEY NEVER DISMISS IT. they never make neal seem incapable for his lack of impulse control they say it like it is- hes someone who is trying to do the right thing and needs help being shown what that looks like at times. ive never really seen a show where a relationship with one adult taking care of another adult and being responsible for them is normalized. the team never treats their dinamic as strange or embarrassing for either of them. thats neal and thats peter. peter is responsible for neal and helps him in a lot of ways. its normal. that's great.
