"why are people shipping these characters they don't even know each other/would've hated each other/etc" we used to be a real country

Actually I’m thinking about this again. Because right now we are slowly seeing the return of fandom going back to being cringe or freaks, and I really do think slowly we will have our spaces back to being unique and fringe areas. The more mainstream casual, essentially normal, audience, is going to slowly move towards the next trendy thing.
But even so, fandom culture may be fundamentally changed because of this. Now even the new fandom people who are genuinely invested and into weirdness still have these strict ideas of what is “proper” and what isn’t. The new blood coming into fandom doesn’t know how fandom has been and is meant to be.
But I think that’s why at this time fandom veterans can be extremely valuable in teaching and showing new fandom people the joys and pleasure of old fandom and con culture. To show kids that it’s good to be a little bit of a freak because that’s the joy of fandom. It’s supposed to be fun, not cool.
Something I have seen, partially with the rise of tiktok, but also just as time goes on, is the tendency for things to be made more palatable as they become more mainstream and accepted. As a bit of a fandom veteran, this is extremely noticeable to me. Fandom used to be more of a shamed, underground thing, and because of that, pretty much anything went. But as we have moved towards mainstreamity, we have lost a lot of the more crazy, silly aspects of fandom. In order for something to be mainstream it has to be, essentially, more “normal”
I'm sure other people experienced in fandom have noticed the rise of “fans” who only have experience casually watching some bbc shows, or “anime” fans who have watched maybe five of the most popular shounen anime and claim they are super into it. It's fine, but it starts to become an issue as we see those types of people try to become the dominant voice in the world of fandom. We also see, lately, a rise in “cringe” ideas being promoted by a lot of these same people.
It has invaded almost every aspect of fandom as well. For one thing, I remember a time where shipping could be pretty much anything. People would even make posts about “I will ship literally anything, it doesn’t matter if they have met or if they are even in the same show. You can't stop me.” I mean if nothing else we saw this with the propensity of Jack Frost/ Elsa shipping. However, more and more we are seeing a push towards: you can’t ship this, you have to ship that. And it is one thing when it comes to pro shipping, which I am not talking about, but when it becomes “you can’t ship these characters because they are enemies”, “you can't ship these characters because one is married”, “you can't ship these characters because they barely know each other.” It becomes ridiculous. Why did we develop standards of what is “acceptable” to ship like this? It is not even about ethical or moral questions, but purely about what is deemed stupid or too crazy. This change is directly proportional to the move towards popularity and a need for fandom to become acceptable.
We also see this in the world of conventions and cosplay. Conventions used to be fun and crazy. We used to dance and play spin the bottle and games. People would run around, make variations on cosplay entirely, making stuff up. Throw together closet cosplays. But with the rise of this popularity, cosplay has become just about replicating characters properly, whether you buy or make a cosplay. It has become about looking good, showing off, and gaining followers. Cringe things like hug signs or bringing mail or sharing props has become almost unheard of. Once again, this is directly tied to popularity and a need for these things to be acceptable and palatable. For them to be more normal and less cringe. While obviously a major part of this is due to the pandemic and several years where cons were shut down and not accessible. With new people coming into the convention scene after that, they don’t have a lot of experience with how con culture was. But I do think a major part of it is still because of this popularity and striving to be acceptable.
I think we are losing a lot of the soul of fandom to this palatability. Fandom as an underground and accepting space, for “weird” people to express themselves, is becoming lost to this drive for acceptance. It is becoming simply boring and standard, with everything being similar and thus “normal”. It is an exhausting standard to keep, leading to baby fandom members being constantly made fun of for cringe. I mean really, there is no place for “cringe” in fandom spaces, and it should not be continued to be used. My issue isn’t inherently with fandom becoming more mainstream. That is entirely fine. But the issue is with this push for everything to be palatable for a mainstream audience or else it is scorned and shamed.
#I’m just increasingly grumpy I guess#I miss cons where you could be weird and crazy and do bs as long as you were nice and respectful#rambling#conventions#fan culture

The most problematic thing about Hua Cheng isn't the debauched city he runs or the statue drama or even the murders. It's how he didn't let Quan Yizhen ride the spooky skeleton drawn golden carriage even though he clearly really really wanted to.

Oh yeah to be clear I’m not saying that Wwx was like, attracted to girls and had no attraction towards lwj prior to resurrection. I’m more speaking that like, from his perspective he did not think he was. And his actions were not leading on. And even if he didn’t he has no obligation to return those feelings.
Teen wwx was truly the peak of pigtail pulling with lwj and it’s very funny when he says he and lwj had no real connection at the beginning of the series and then spends like every waking moment of crsa thinking about him
But the thing is I don’t think wwx should be punished for the actions Lwj took while defending him in his first life. Wwx never asked for any of that, he wasn’t even aware of most of it.
None of that is his fault or something he did. He didn’t lead lwj on or have a relationship with him, he isn’t an ex, he’s someone lwj was interested in.
Wwx is not a bad person for not having been in love with lwj before. People aren’t bad just because they don’t reciprocate feelings.

#and wwx had heavily implied attraction to women at multiple points#but even if he was just not interested in any romance#you’d vilify him for that?#he was not deliberately cruel about it and no one ever told him anything#how was he supposed to know#I think that’s my biggest gripe w anti wwx content#like it’s so fucking frustrating when people just expect you to know and understand what they want from you#mdzs#wangxian#mo dao zu shi#meta

This Pride I hope that all of you never ever forget that no amount of sanitizing your sex life or sanding down of your LGBT edges will make bigots accept you. So, don’t debase yourself by capitulating an inch to them, especially in ways that throw your fellow community members under the bus.

Remember to make space for the heteros this month too - yes, really.
Lesbians who became straight men
Gay men who became straight women
All straight drag artists (note that not all of them are cis!)
People with complex identities who thusly encompass multiple orientations (like genderfluid and multigender people who, yes, are sometimes straight, or even simultaneously with other labels)
Hetero aro and ace people. Especially. Seriously.
People with fluid orientations
Gnc people who find joy in their straightness
Many queer people are also straight. Queerness is note solely reliant on gayness. These people too, are a part of pride. Remember that.
[All discourse attempts will be swiftly blocked. Exclusionists fuck off]

An informational comic I drew last year for my Comics 2 class, reposting it to my new account (had to jump ship from the old one unfortunately) with some minor grammar changes and learned my lesson in adding watermarks! Happy early pride :)

Do you keep a wild spider in your house, alive, as a form of pest control?
I have one in my RR that’s barely noticeable, but when I have people over they think it’s pretty odd.
#I tried to kill a wolf spider repeatedly but it survived#so I let it live and it kills the fruit flies#it leaves a lot of remains sadly#wasteful
