Size and Scale
Although my my sculpt is small it is meant to appear big using the effect of perspective and making its surroundings smaller in comparison. this technique is used to make miniatures like film sets and games like Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons. This helps you get lost in the artificial universe and allows you to really use your imagination.

Jake Garber
The film includes themes of horror aswell as SFX makeup. this links to my makeup that i did and can also include the theme of horror in there. this film is also inspired by an old comic book so it can mean that i can use these as inspiration for my project too.
Jake Garber was in charge of making Perlman look like a demon with the help of SFX make up for the film Hellboy. Hellboy is a popular comic book character brought to life on the big screen, features the makeup work of Jake Garber. Garber is a talented makeup artist, transformed actor Ron Perlman into the iconic red-skinned, horned demon with impressive detail. Using a combination of prosthetics, makeup, and practical effects, Garber created Hellboy's distinctive look, complete with his sawed-off horns and rugged features. His skillful application made the character believable and visually striking, contributing to the film's success and bringing the beloved comic book hero to life in a memorable way.

the Lost Boys
The film expresses a showcase of SFX makeup, and also displays horror, with the vampires, these are both common topics in my project.
The Lost Boys features the amazing special effects makeup by Greg Cannom. Cannom is a skilled makeup artist, turned the actors into scary vampires, making a big impact on horror movies. He used prosthetics, contact lenses, and detailed makeup to create the vampires' look, with glowing eyes, sharp fangs, and creepy transformations. His work on The Lost Boys showed his talent and creativity, setting a high standard for special effects makeup in horror films.

Ray Harryhausens Skeleton Army
Harryhausen is something i could use as inspiration as it is another example of an animated skeleton and is something that i could use as inspiration but it is not something similar to how i would want my final piece to be like.
Ray Harryhausen's skeleton army is a great example of stop-motion animation. To bring these eerie skeletons to life, Harryhausen made detailed models of each skeleton. He then used a process called stop-motion animation, where he would move the skeletons in small movements, taking a photo of each new position. By playing these photos, the skeletons appeared to move fluidly and realistically. This process required patience and skill, as even a short scene could take days or weeks to complete. The result was a lifelike depiction of an army of skeletons that captivated audiences and became a hallmark of Harryhausen's genius.

Rebooted
I am looking into rebooted because it shows a contrast between the living and the dead. Contrast is also presented in the form of either animation or acted, as the skeleton is the only stop motion feature in the film. Although it is another skeleton design, this is not something that i want my final piece to be like, and its important to recognise that so i can be more precise with my piece. My skeleton is trying to be scarier than this, this skeleton wants to fit in with humans and isnt scary at all, and nobody finds him scary. You would expect people to be acting weird when they see a skeleton but they dont.
Rebooted is about a skeleton who is trying to live like a normal human, he trys to be a human with so many different activities but really struggles because he is different, he does stuff that he really doesnt need to do because hes dead, he also shows the sadness of human life.

Halloween
I am looking at Halloween because it is a very common theme of horror that is present in everyone's lives once a year. It is interesting that like the day of the dead sugary treats are given out despite the fact that it is normally about death and horror and these are not very sweet topics.
Halloween is an incredibly spooky time! It’s a night when everything seems eerie, and it feels like ghosts might be lurking around every corner. The streets are lined with creepy jack-o'-lanterns, their weird, carved faces flickering with an eerie light that seems to follow you wherever you go. People dress up in all sorts of frightening costumes, making it nearly impossible to tell who anyone really is. The air is cold and crisp, and the darkness of the night makes every little noise seem amplified, causing you to jump at the rustling of leaves or the distant howl of a dog. On Halloween, it feels like all the scary things you can imagine could actually come to life, making the night both thrilling and terrifying

Skull work sheet
i looked at pinterest for a picture of a skull to use a reference photo until i found one i liked the look of
i then began laying out the outline using a 4b pencil
i slowly filled in more of the shapes building it up as i went
i found it hard to place the teeth and took time making sure they were spaced evenly and had enough room to fit them all in
i followed my reference closely adding a light overall shading across the sketch by angling the pencil on its side a lightly stroking my hand back and forth in big strides
i filled in the eyes using a softer, darker pencil shade making sure they were a solid, deep, black colour

Process
unfortunately i have lost photos of this process, i made the armature by spinning some thin green wire together, this made it stronger, i then wrapped masking tape around the wire to give the super sculpey something to stick on
i then got started working with my monster clay, which i had never used before, and got to layering it on to. i layered it as thinly as i could, struggling to get it to stick (i have always had this issue, even with super sculpey) so i found this process really frustrating and tedious because every time i tried to stick it down it would lift up. this is because of layering it so thinly.
whilst making the armature, i experimented with the poses until i settled on a position i liked.
i then moved on to build up fine details such as the rib cage, collar bones, and shoulders. i added small amounts of clay at a time ensuring to keep it as thin and dainty as possible.
i carefully worked around my sculpture trying to create some kind of defined shape. i found that when doing this i would squish the fine details as i moved the model around in my hand, this meant i had to constantly reshape areas i had just done.
i found that i didn't add enough to the rib cage so i went back, added more super sculpey, and created more ribs, this made it look more proportionate to the rest of the sculpture.
at this stage i was stuck on what to do with the hands, feet, and face, helping to get some help form my course director.
i added detail to the arms, by making it appear as if the bone had split in two, i used a pointed sculpting tool with a flat edge and pressed it sideways down the length of the arm. i made sure to make the hips exaggerated and bold adding extra emphasis to the holes.
i carved out definition by using a spoon like tool and creating negative space. at this stage i got some help from my course director where she assisted me with shaping the skull, hands, and feet.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
I'm looking at the four horsemen of the apocalypse because my creature is about the apocalypse and the end of the world as it has killed everyone and the skeleton, like the four horsemen, can be symbolic of the end of life.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are symbolic figures from the Bible's Book of Revelation, each representing different disasters that will occur before the end of the world. The first horseman, riding a white horse, symbolizes conquest or disease. The second, on a red horse, represents war. The third, riding a black horse, signifies famine, marked by food scarcity and economic hardship. The fourth horseman, on a pale horse, is Death, bringing widespread destruction through war, famine, and disease. Together, these horsemen show the major events that come before the end of the world.
