Some Thoughts on Captions

Allow me a brief moment to wax philosophical on the whole making of captions: -Image vs. Text: Many songwriters talk about how the melody is the first part of making a song for them, with the lyrics usually following thereafter. In much the same way, I tend to find an interesting/sexy image first and then come up with the caption thereafter. Sometimes I think I have an idea for a caption and then as I make it, I'll edit and revise until it fully fits the image. -Comic Influence: I've always been a comics fan, from Garfield as a kid to graphic novels as a teen and adult. Years ago, I read Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, a seminal work in understanding the medium. I've come to realize that in many ways, my captions are like a one-panel comic. Less punchlines and more sexy (I hope), but following much of the basic rules and structure of a comic. They're not exactly The Farside in quality, but still neat to consider them in a similar category of sorts. -My Place as a Creator: This is a tricky thing to contend with. I look at other creators like @gooncaps69 and @hopelessbater and others and realize that I'll never be like them. I can't be as prolific as gooncaps69 or as widely popular as hopelessbater, but there's definitely a lane for me in making captions. I feel like my captions offer a wide variety in structure, theme, and appeal and I like that about them. One of my great delights is seeing which of my captions ends up going "viral" as there are some I can predict will do well and others that I wouldn't have guessed at. -Conclusion: If you've made it this far into my rambling, I appreciate it. And truly, I enjoy all the likes, reblogs, and other interactions on here. I intend to keep making captions for quite a while yet and I hope you'll keep enjoying them!
