Ok, I've seen this sentiment before, but the amount of Kindle Unlimited ads I've been seeing is forcing me to repeat it-

Kindle Unlimited is offering two free months of unlimited ebooks. As a trial. Which will then become a paid subscription.

Your local library is offering unlimited ebooks all the time. Forever. No contracts, no predatory practices, no tracking of how long you spend on each particular page in the hopes that information about your habits can be sold for a profit.

Use your library. They want so badly to give you all of the things for free.

I just spent an hour listening to Joseph Quinn talk about food, and now I’m convinced that not only could I look at him smiling forever, I could also listen to him talk forever. My takeaways from the podcast:

1. As an American, British people are so funny to me. And it’s even funnier to hear them talk about American things they think are weird, like saying “sure” and thinking that “I appreciate you” is too forward

2. I’m going to start saying “please” more in the off chance I ever get to meet Joseph, so he doesn’t think I’m just another American who doesn’t say please enough!

3. They talked about it for probably ten minutes, but I still don’t understand wth a hatch is

4. The image of Joseph spitting an oyster into a martini is now permanently stored in my brain, thank you

5. I’m from California, but I agree with these Brits that people saying “I’ll do” instead of “I’ll have” when ordering food is weird

6. Joseph saying “shall we move on?” Always so polite lol

7. Also did he just make a self-effacing joke about being forgettable?!

8. Joseph has a flatmate!! And apparently they hide fish skeletons around their flat for the other to find?? Idk if that was a joke

9. Love the idea of starting with the mediocre wine and then moving on to the good stuff

10. I’m going to try a pistachio affogato at the soonest possible opportunity that sounds amazing

Tumblr and the No Good, Very Bad Idea

So. You might have heard the news that, as of July 12, Tumblr is testing out converting GIFs into looping MP4 videos to help pages load faster:

This is bad. Tumblr is the only mainstream site left where you can post GIFs and they’ll continue to be GIFs - well, sort of, as Tumblr previously tested and implemented turning GIF into GIFV with the same purpose, and it decreases the quality of the original GIF file. Turning them into MP4 videos is even worse.

GIFs are GIFs. They’re not videos. Creators spend hours making a GIF that will look good as a GIF, not as a video.

I hope I don’t need to explain to anyone why continuing to screw over creators is bad for a site like Tumblr, whose continued existence depends on creators not giving up on it, and why gif-making is important to fandom existence.

I for one will not continue to make any more gifsets if I know they’ll just be turned into MP4 files. It’s disappointing to spend my time making something and watch it become ugly once it’s uploaded - and that’s what is already happening without the MP4 conversion.

I recently got a quasi-promotion at work and while this translated into even less time for writing/sleeping/(tea)drinking, it also gifted me with the opportunity to commission the wondrous @lotustiled. (If you're unfamiliar with her work - heathen! - click on her tumblr immediately. Like, right now. Immediately.)

I'm happy about so many things in this piece: Katara's hair, Zuko's wtf expression, the loss of tea, Katara's hair, the adorable nose scrunch of tiredness. This is a small, silly, and (to me) lovable glimpse into the pair's friendship in Tempest.

(Also, it further emphasizes the fact that Katara basically spent the two years cramming for a test…which turned out to be a twelve-year old with a magic flying cow. ¯\_(⌣̯̀⌣́)_/¯ )
