heya!! i've dropped by just to say that ive been listening to your South Side Rules podcast over on Fascination and Frustration - and DAMN. it's so good, exactly what i need atm, hyper analysis of every episode and character from my favourite show drilled into my blank thoughts lmao. Big thank you for making it along with your cohost! Just finished the first episode fully smiling like a lunatic as i ate dinner. I really appreciated how you both so succinctly articulate my own jumbled thoughts about the show and characters, aswell as features and ideas i literally hadn't even considered. As someone who can quote almost every episode in the first five seasons, it's always great to get other perspective and ideas about scenes, so much love back to yall. I had a blast just vibing out to you two yapping about my favourite thing - it felt so natural and conversational at the perfect pace to keep up with as a listener. Reading Mockingjay as an adult is extra devastating because. Of course the plucky teenager and her ragtag friends aren't going to sneak into a government building to kill the president with a bow and arrow. That's absolutely ridiculous. It's the kind of thing that's only possible in the kind of propaganda that Coin developed. But she's so good at it that in some ways she tricks the reader into thinking that's the kind of story this is, too--even after 3 books reminding us that pretty much everything that Katniss does the second she volunteers is manipulated by adults pulling strings to make propaganda in some form or another.

I’m not sure that we have much interest in any further book exploration to be honest, we will definitely finish the malec trilogy when that eventually publishes but I think we’ll likely leave it there.

ive managed to binge the entire first season of SSR since I last spoke to you (so...one? two? days)(which given that I binged all 11 seasons of the show itself in about the span of two weeks isn't entirely surprising to Me but nonetheless required a lot of ignoring of work i should be doing instead...anyways! Time well spent.) and thought I'd give you some thoughts!! I've missed writing in for your podcasts and can't bring myself to wait for season 5 🙌🙌

i didn't keep notes as i listened through so this is going to be very scattered and I apologise (though i was very much the shame for TDIE...and also presumably you haven't listened to the whole season in the last few days and so this is going to feel very random regardless!!)

- first and foremost I've MISSED YOU GUYS SO MUCH and yet it simulateously feels like I picked up right where I left off? it definitely does not feel like its been 2/3 years since i last listened to you guys (and honestly podcasts as a whole!) which I think speaks to how consistently good you guys are at podcasting and discussing!! massive massive massive kudos

- I didn't realise the title of the podcast meant rules in the "guidelines/law" sense until about five episodes in and Michelle had stated about ten southside rules (eg no snitching etc) and thought you meant rules in the "this thing is so good" way. nice title on your end, made me feel very dumb though and that is entirely on me

- Ruth's way of coming to shameless is very funny to me...though I think more normal than my way (which was getting gallavich tiktoks on my fyp -> watching entire scenes of the show but still through tiktok -> finally caving and just watching the show normally on netflix)...jody may be a minorish character but watching shows for an actor is not that abnormal 😪 that being said I've been meaning to watch the bear because of ayo ediberi in Bottoms and JAW in this means I absolutely HAVE to now

- God I'm glad you mainly have the same opinions as me on these characters!! all the love for debbie!!!! she is SO important to me and i hope you continue loving her in the later seasons because she gets so much hate which i think is unwarranted 😪😪😪 which you might in the season four roundup have changed your opinion on (and i will find out when I get to it) but as of now the debbie love is making me very happy 🙌 i do feel more positively about Jimmy Steve (or at least early Jimmy Steve - by the time he's cheating and doing whatever nonsense he is by spying on fiona at patsys I can't stand him) but as you say that's very much because of his involvement within the Gallagher family - I like him because of how he accepts this family unit so immediately (in a way that later boyfriends don't, and not only try to but DO take fiona away from the family...looking at you Sean 🙄🙄). the lying/double identity is pointless and the tony love triangle boring and predictable, i agree (tony later saying fiona turned him gay does make me giggle and i agree that he wasnt 'wasted' in this plot line- Tony is ALSO most interesting as a community member/in his interactions with the Gallagher family as a whole)...but looking at Jimmy Steve in retrospective i do prefer him to most of the other boyfriends because of how involved he is in the family as a whole and not just fiona (which is perhaps harsh to fiona as a character and she does deserve a life of her own/shouldnt have had to be a parent at 17...but she is, and the sibling relationships are my FAVOURITE bits of the show and so it does annoy me when later characters get in the way of that...). the Frank qualifier!! you are better people than me. he would get -5 in every episode from me 😔 the rambling alone annoys me SO much (which given the length of this comment...I have no leg to stand on) william h macy is great and the writing is funny at times but whenever it's a Frank scene I'm just waiting for it to be over to get back to the characters I care about and that don't ANNOY me...there are plenty of immoral people in this show but Frank and Monica are the worst characters (to me) because they're bad people AND annoying people! Terry, for instance, may be a far worse person - but as a character at least he doesn't just irritate me!! the scene where debbie beats him up with the butter sock? that's me mentally everytime he's on stage 😔 though you do seem to mainly agree on this front too (despite giving him positive points, which yes rationally I see where they come from) which is as refreshing as your debbie love because I see far too much Frank appreciation online! obviously I adore lip/ian/milkoviches/etc etc etc too...but the people who don't are very much in the minority and so the debbie love/Frank grievance is so affirming to hear. I love when people agree with me and I don't have to question my own thoughts 😋😋 who needs critical thinking 😋😋😋

- you mention this offhandedly and I assume it will be discussed more when I get to it... but the fact that you acknowledge the liam+coke/fiona leaving in s9 holds such different narrative weight affirms me SO much. the coke thing was a deliberate fall out of the guardianship storyline whereas by s9 its like they forgot about guardianship altogether and it's insanely annoying seeing people act like theyre intended to be similar scenarios!! the two events were viewed so differently by the narrative and people just...don't seem to get that? which is INSANE to me smh

- miscovich made me laugh so much. i love that family so much (or rather, the characters in that family we care about...I don't love the racism and homophobia, obviously!) mickey and mandy get all the joy points...a few to crabbe and goyle milcovich (side note, the actor for iggy milkovich has written fanfic for iggy which I think should feature in your fic recommendation episode if you do one for SSR like you did TDIE. it's very entertaining) and eventually to sandy when she appears (though the blatant mandy rip off that her character is...something. rhyming names? really? cannot WAIT to get to the later seasons when they become bigger characters!!

- you guys questioning shameless science is so funny given that shameless clearly operates in a pocket dimension where characters age at different speeds

- Ruth, I'm joining the list of people who you've ruined by pointing out that Ian had NO reason to get replacement food after mickey robbed kash and grab. you're right and I hate it

- it's so interesting to think about season 1 coming off the back of having watched the later seasons! shameless is FAR from consistent (and Michelle saying so did make me laugh) but for instance Ian being shirtless for all sex (dock scene? mickey still had his beanie on why did you strip fully) and ian leaving over and over (initially to the gallaghers and then to mickey...until like season 10?) are respectively such inane/hilarious and heartwrenching aspects of his characterisation that I love being able to see it in retrospect! or debbies smarts - I remember being confused by her taking the GED so easily in s5 as that effortless intelligence is mainly a lip thing but you're so right that it's consistent! very nice that they do keep minor elements of characterisation (shirtless sex...debbies intelligence which isn't central to her in the way it is to lip) so consistent in a show which does struggle with consistence by its end

- this isn't at all about shameless but you mentioned your cat (I assume Mouse?) purring into the mic and hey i missed them too <3 and Michelle's farm stories!!! animals are a core part of f&f to me <3

I think that is all? I definitely had more thoughts but have forgotten because...didn't keep proper notes as I listened. I don't think I'll be able to binge the next three SSR seasons as quickly (both because I do need to do the uni work I'm neglecting by binging shameless and then a shameless podcast eventually and also because I don't want to get through it so fast and then have ages to wait for s5 with no new content!!)...but when I get round to it do expect more year-late thoughts!

We have indeed not listened to the whole of SSR Season 1 in the last few days, so let's get ready for a blast from the past... and also to see how much I remember about the things that we say. On record. Where everyone can hear it and produce it as evidence! lol

first and foremost: THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND WORDS! it makes me so happy that picking up a new podcast of ours after several years of not listening feels like meeting up with an old friend you haven't seen in a long time, but still have lots in common with. that makes me beam :)

'South Side Rules' is a title of a Shameless episode in season 5, and you're not exactly wrong. The 'Go South Side! Go! Go! South Side Rules!' cheerleader chant aspect of that title has definitely been joked about plenty, so you're not too far off.

Honestly, your way is a worryingly standard way of coming to the show. I know a LOT of people started with TikToks or gifs on tumblr, then Gallavich Scenes on youtube, and most of them (though not all, which still sort of blows my mind) eventually caved and just watched the show.

As Ruth isn't here, i'll do her part of the conversation for her. ::clears throat:: WATCH BLACK SAILS EVERYBODY! Jody, from Shameless is in it haha And while we're at it: WATCH THE BEAR EVERYBODY, JAW from Shameless is in it, but also, you are so right, it has Ayo Ediberi and she is the most woderful human in the world right now!! and hey, once you've watched it, you can listen to our 3 The Bear Thinky Thoughts podcast episodes

Debbie is difficult, and her character and the writing for her character, and the other characters around her and how they react to her, changes dramatically throughout the show, so honestly, i'm interested to see how our discussion about Debbie is going to go, as we continue the seasons.

In terms of Frank... I think if I were to score him overall, right now, it would definitely be a chronic -5 points. But it is nice when he surprises you and contributes positively to an episode.

What you mentioned about there being a lot of Frank love... it's probably the most jarring difference between your 'casual Shameless viewer' and viewers that make up the 'shameless fandom'. Apart from The Bear, Shameless is the show that most people I speak to in real life have seen some or all of, which doesn't usually happen. And 90% of the people I've spoken to in real life, who have watched Shameless, have opened with 'Frank is so funny! I love his character!. At which point the conversation is over for me lol

And yes. As you allude to. We will be continuing to talk about Fiona and guardianship, as the seasons continue and everything... unravels.

Luckily we had already recorded and finished the fic rec episode by the time this ask came through, so Iggy fanfic does not feature... lol yeah, I am aware that Trautmann has written and posted fanfic, and I love that for him!! and I will never ever read it hahaha

The cat purring into the microphone was actually Howard, our lovely silly ginger. He used to live at the farm and when I quit I basicallsy stole him, so @rutherinahobbit could have him.... 🤷🏽‍♂️ lol There was a little bit more to it then that but that's kinda the bottom line, really. They love each other and should never ever be separated.

Mouse is sadly no longer with us. She passed away in 2021. We miss her every day.
