A ( BRIEF ) HISTORY OF NOXUS UP TO THE 16TH CENTURY.
Historically, a Noxian is the name of an individual who originates from the Ur-Noxian region of Northern Valoran, though now it is commonly associated to any individual who lives within the realm of the empire. The Ur-Noxian region expands from Noxus Primeâs centre to the surrounding area, reaching the Moro River ( near current day Bloodcliffs ) and further south. This was the original realm of the warlord Mordred Kaiser - later shortened historically to Mordekaiser - whose reign ended one thousand years ago. With his death and the capture of the Immortal Bastion, the formation of the Noxian Kingdom began the expansion of its borders.
The Noxian Kingdom was created in 1060 CLE after the fall of the warlordâs regime. Grand General Caro Venesas was one of the oldest men of the tribal bands who was regarded as the most seasoned veteran among them. His leadership led to the conquering of the Immortal Bastion, and it is said when the body of Mordekaiser burned, the soldiers around him knelt before him, humbled at the slayer of the Emperor of Death.Â
It would take several centuries of slow expansion until the coronation of Grand General Vivian Cartiani, where she declared that the realm of Noxus must expand beyond the riverbeds they had taken home along and seek realms that rightfully belong to them. She was a vicious expansionist who declared a second war upon the Draken Kingdom, igniting the Second Draken War ( see below for reference to the First Draken War ). This resulted in the capture of the capital city Drakengate, and over the course of two years the conquering of the remaining kingdom became a stepping stone for Noxusâ rise to imperial status. The only remaining empire of the world after the fall of Shurima, Noxus would go on to claim the nations along the coastline of what we now refer to as the Ionian Sea. In 1492 CLE, at the peak of her rule, Grand General Vivian Cartiani was the most feared woman in Valoran.
It was in 1508 CLE that the Kingdom of Demacia, a young but slowly growing realm, would publicly denounce this empire for its warmongering threat to Runeterra. In 1539 CLE, the First Noxian-Demacian conflict began over the conquering of Glorft, a city state that Demacia had taken to protect. The war was short, lasting only to the winter of that year - the assistance of a certain yordle commander from the north had turned the tide in Noxusâ favour. This act sparked the centuries long bloody hatred between the nations, taking opposing stances on nearly every political situation. The king of Demacia in 1540 CLE was King Karan Lightshield III, who stoked the flames of future Demacian sentiment towards Noxus - he campaigned against the new Grand General, Vivianâs daughter Valeria, citing the brutality of Noxus during the Assault of Glorft caused the Demacian public to have incredibly negative opinions towards those of Noxus.
Noxus has continued its expansion, today reaching across the dividing sea and into the territory of the revived Shurima Empire. It has existed for approximately eight hundred years and is one of the oldest nations present on Runeterra. At our current time, the Ionian Invasion was approximately seven years ago, with Noxian pride & military strength still recovering from the loss. Its current Grand General is Jericho Swain, who challenged the ascension of Keiran Darkwill and succeeded in usurping the title.

ORIGINS OF THE BLACK ROSE.
The Black Rose is a secret society rooted deep in the history of Noxus and has been rumoured to have existed since the formation of the first kingdom. After the fall of the warlords of Ur-Noxaa ( the historical name of the region Noxusâ original land ) the victors took the Immortal Bastion at Deathâs Peak for themselves. They established a unified government with the territory they came from, as well as the pre-existing land once owned by the great warlord Mordekaiser, and created the first kingdom of Noxus. Due to their military based backgrounds, it came as a logical conclusion to base the system of government on its military and the armies brought to the Bastion when they dethroned the former warlord. The first Grand General was a man named Caro Venesas.
He sired three children - two boys, and one girl. His firstborn son was Edom Venesas, who ascended to the throne when he came of age. His secondborn was Dagan Venesas, who joined the guard of his father and brother.
His thirdborn daughter was named Evaine.
Evaine Venesas was the âjewel of Noxusâ - born with an affinity to magic and blessed by the first priests of the kingdom, she was arranged to wed a young nobleman from the ( now nonexistant ) kingdom of Voraria when she became of age to bargain for secure trade between the older nation and the newfounded land of Noxus. During the courtship between Evaine and the nobleman, she met his family, and grew incredibly close to his sister. Come her marriage, she decided she would not allow herself to be sold to a man she had no feelings for, and instead eloped with the woman she had instead fallen for.
Enraged and embarrassed in the face of his new ally, Caro searched both Voraria and Noxus for the two women. For several years, they would scourge the nations to find them, but never did they return with them. It was on the final year of the search, that one party of soldiers the Grand General sent towards the township of Garent never returned. A second party, led by Dagan himself, went to investigate - the bodies of the first collective were left outside of the village, singed with icefire. A single soldier entered the village to investigate, and while he managed to survive, it was oddly noted that there was not a single person present in the village. The search for Evaine and her wife was called off, and Caro instructed her name be stricken from family records.
It was some time after Caro had passed and Edom Venesas became the second Grand General of Noxus, that a new era of Noxusâ politics would begin.
Edom returned to his quarters one evening with his wife. When the new dawn came and he was woken by his servants to be dressed, he rose and greeted them with a smile. Though not many noticed, Edom Venesas was a different man from then on - for he was not Edom Venesas, but Evaine Venesas in disguise of her brother. She had slain him and his wife in their sleep, and with glamour magic that she had perfected alongside her own partner, they took position as Grand General Edom Venesas and wife Aemilia. They posed as rulers of the kingdom for several years, raising Edomâs son as their own, unknowingly to all that it was the boyâs aunt in place of who all thought to be Edom.
As Evaine managed her facade among the people, she began recruitment among the political figures, artisans, musicians, painters, philosophers, authors, and academics ( magical and nonmagical ) of Noxus and its growing borders, establishing a society of high culture and political thought in the catacombs of the city. Deep in the tunnels of the Immortal Bastion, and in various estates in Noxus Prime, the first meetings of the Black Rose would take place. Evaine did not present as Edom at these meetings - her rare appearances during events was as a woman simply known as The Matron, a veiled woman in black who made close company with her guests.
Evaine had mastered her glamour magic, discovering the great power of true immortality. When Edom âpassed awayâ to the public of Noxus, she disappeared into the mansion she had purchased to house Black Rose meetings. Edomâs son took the throne after âhis passingâ, never knowing his father had truly died long ago. Evaineâs wife own passed, too, unable to harness the immortality magic that Evaine had managed - it seemed to be a magic only she could possess, and not share with others. Now alone, she chose to rework her identity to something more unique, to the next chapter of her plans for Noxus - from Evaine Venesasâ shell came Emilie LeBlanc, a name adopted from the former queen of Noxus that her own beloved took. Emilie LeBlancâs position as the Matron is eternal - she has been alive for over six hundred years, with her immortality magic and eternal glamours keeping her youthful. Nobody in Noxus truly knows her, and those in the Black Rose do not either - most believe Emilie to be the descendant of a long LeBlanc dynasty, with each daughter taking title of the Matron.
The Black Roseâs gatherings are both parties and professional meetings - international trades are made, military plans are exchanged, art is sold and created. They are a society of elegance, vanity and deep thought. There are about one hundred members within the Black Rose, with almost every one living in Noxus Prime - those who do not are still Noxians by blood and birth, and act as spies in other nations and cities. Most of those not in Noxus are in Demacia.
All of the invitations to the Black Rose are written and sent out by Emilie LeBlanc herself - she may send stewards in her stead, but she is the only one who makes the decision as to who may visit and be welcomed into her homesteads. Those in the Black Rose are sworn to secrecy - they are not allowed to tell anyone of their association to the Rose, and should they do, those who they told would mysteriously vanish, and the culprit would be punished swiftly by the Matron herself.
