I’m proud to have made this happen with a team of incredible women who lift each other up, instead of holding one another back. @gina_schiappacasse_art had been an audience member in an ad my band VELTA shot for Converse. After that we ran into each other at Matchless in Brooklyn (is that right Gina?) and shorty after that she hand delivered a portrait to my shop in Williamsburg. I was an instant fan of her incredible talent. Gina is an artist in many mediums though her illustrations are most known I think. You can see why. Here’s her most recent gift to me. I post her work often because I’m lucky enough to be the subject of many pieces that document me in my many mediums. I have a history of my ever changing style in illustrations thanks to her. I woke up and drove to the Green Valley because when you live near a valley and are free, and your hubs is sleeping, that’s something you can do. There are so many things I want to see and do here that I don’t know how I’ll find the time. Today I saw 300 acres of Pecan trees and learned that you can tell the difference between pistachios and pecan trees by the color of the trunk. I had forgotten myself for many years until recently. The reason is a combination of things: survival mode, bad habits, a high turnover in my love life, a series of strange work situations. I mean I always remained and even excelled but was never quite sure why or if I was doing things authentically. I think I was being the best I could with where I was at but always suspected I could be better, at everything. Slowing down is a strange thing for me, even uncomfortable but boy has it made me evolve. I’m alone a lot and I’ve gotten to know myself again. Im losing inhibitions and getting sorta reclusive at the same time. I work on my shop, ongoing projects and record. Spend the evenings with my man. And after a year away from the hustle and bustle I’m remembering what I need to be happy. It’s not too much. (at Tucson, Arizona)
