Mae Turner headcanons

grew up in Holyhead (north of Wales) but her parents have English accents, hence her accent

has two sisters, one three years younger and another six years younger

watched Danger Mouse a lot as a kid. her favourite character (aka gay awakening) was Professor Squakencluck. also part of what made her want to be a scientist

has always loved dinosaurs, ever since she was little

her parents aren’t remotely involved in dinosaurs but support her anyway. her relationship with them is AMAZING

her childhood hero was David Attenborough. his nature documentaries helped her fall asleep when she had insomnia as a child

had a pet bearded dragon from the age of eight to seventeen. his name was Charles

raised Protestant Christian but no longer practises

went to a small, local primary school, and a much bigger secondary school. the change was drastic, but she managed

she was always reading books and playing pretend she was an explorer of dinosaurs on the playground. sometimes she'd invite friends on her “expeditions” through the fields but usually it's just her. she didn't really have many friends growing up

autistic for sure. didn't get diagnosed until after Nublar when Ben was talking about his experience being autistic, and she was like. hey this sounds like me. so she looked into it, and luckily knew a classmate from uni who's an autism specialist who owed Mae a favour, so they got her officially diagnosed

she's always known she's queer, but she never found a label that suits her. she likes girls for sure and she's somewhere on the aroace spectrum

her parents are very supportive ofc. there's no pride  events near them so every June they have a mini pride march in their back garden with a disco and dancing

only likes wholemeal bread. won’t eat white bread or even 50/50

in fact, doesn’t like processed foods at ALL. her parents never gave her and her sisters processed food, and she's a scientist, she knows the scientific reasons why that stuff is bad for you. she also had to eat a lot of processed foods on Mantah Corp island and it really turned her off them

went to the university of Cardiff, and has since been travelling all around the world with her research

had a really close group of friends in uni (who were all nerds like her) that she's still in touch with

she also dated a few times after uni, but nothing really stuck. she was too busy researching

stays in touch with the kids. she gives them advice and tell them cool science stuff. she won't do their homework for them (Brooklynn once asked) but she will help them ofc

she's the closest to Ben probably. they hang out a lot on the island during the summers. but she cares a lot about all of the camp fam. they're her nieces and nephews ❤️

stays in touch with Dave and Roxie as well (even though they don't really know each other) and they become friends. once in a while they spend a long weekend together and go out drinking. she and Roxie gang up on teasing Dave and it's hilarious

she goes to live with her parents, who encourages her to take a break from all her researching and science stuff, and she lives with them for about a year

afterwards, she opens a dinosaur neurology research facility in Wales

she also does volunteer work for an organisation that helps kids who have been abused (she's still horrified by what Kenji went through and she doesn't want it to happen to anyone else if she can help it)

Darius introduces her to Ronnie at a party at Yaz and Sammy's ranch/farm seven ish months after chaos theory. Mae and Ronnie start talking and very quickly become friends

Ronnie quit her job at the dpw after learning they're evil, so she's looking for work, and it just so happens Mae's research facility in Wales has an opening, and Mae has a spare bedroom. so they move in together

they fall slowly in love after about six months. Ronnie is the one who confesses

Mae is thrilled to discover Ronnie is a secret nerd. and that she loves listening to Mae infodump about whatever interests her

they become honorary Aunts to the camp fam

they get another bearded dragon called Charles II

she and Ronnie both don't want kids. the camp fam are enough for them, even though they're adults at this point. they're happy with their dinosaur research and gorgeous Welsh landscape and bearded dragon baby

at first, they can not STAND each other. Yaz sees a bratty, shallow influencer, and Brooklynn sees a distant, arrogant track star

their stint on the hang gliders helped start to break down their impressions of each other

after Nublar, Brooklynn tries her best to stay in touch with Yaz (and Sammy). they are her first real friends who are girls, and she's not very used to having any friends. and with two dads, a boyfriend, and two other guy friends, she really values them in her life

the three have zoom chats, sleepovers (mostly on Sammy's ranch because it's the roomiest location, and Yaz and Brooklynn can afford to travel the easiest), and they text loads, but it was always them as a trio

their real turning point for Yaz and Brooklynn was when they were at a protest, the cops were causing ruckus, and they both got arrested together. they spent hours in a jail cell and have a really deep chat about their lives and how they view the world

they really brought them closer and they start hanging out without Sammy to grow their friendship just them two

they both have a taste for crime/mystery/thriller tv shows. they watch them over discord and bully each other into watching whatever the other person recommends

they still bully/tease each other constantly of course 

they don't say hi by their names; they say something along the lines of “hey bitch” “hey c*nt” (this is what my sibling and i do lmao)

Brooklynn was always like a bit of a bratty younger sister who always wants to hang out with Yaz (the aloof older sister). (“Yaaaaaaz, can we zoom call later?” “sorry, i need to study for my finals” “pleeeeeeaaaaase 🥺🥺🥺”)

when Brooklynn becomes more occupied with her investigating, Yaz is pretty worried but Brooklynn tells her she's just busy, and suddenly Yaz is missing when Brooklynn pestered her all the time

then Brooklynn “dies”, and on paper, Yaz handles it the best out of the camp fan, but she's so destroyed over all the times she could've spent more time with Brooklynn and didn't

she's just so thankful she's alive, but she's always seen Brooklynn more as a younger sister than a friend so ofc she is fiercely protective of her and worried about her, even when she hates her. going after her in Malta isn't even a question for her

DISABILITY SOLIDARITY!!!! Yaz, being the only other physically disabled person in the camp fam, was the most casually accepting with Brooklynn's disability, whereas the other four didn't really know how to react or talk about it respectfully. Yaz gives them an hour–long presentation on disability etiquette, and the difference in their mannerisms is so noticeable from the next day. Brooklynn is very grateful to Yaz for that

Brooklynn buys Yaz cool accessories and stickers for her cane and braces

Yaz helps Brooklynn cut and dye her hair when the camp fam are living together after chaos theory

whenever Yaz (a young person with a mobility aid) gets stares in public, Brooklynn flips them off and/or threatens them (“i suggest you shut up before i crush your throat”)

Yaz lets Brooklynn practise doing plaits on her hair, since she had to relearn how to do it with one arm and Yaz's hair is the longest out of the camp fam's

after chaos theory, Yaz helps encourage Brooklynn to go to therapy for her PTSD. she knows how scary it is to go to therapy in a way none of the others know, so they become closer as a result

Yaz and Brooklynn are both very firm advocates for Palestine 

they're also the most politically informed of the group, so combined they keep the rest of the camp fam informed

Yaz is more into politics and Brooklynn is more into current affairs (celebrities and public stuff) and they keep each other updated

they love Mamma Mia (Brooklynn loves the vibe and Yaz loves the mother/daughter themes and they both love the music bcos who wouldn't??). they and Sammy go to a Greek island holiday for two weeks when they're in their twenties. they have the girls trip of their life

Yaz and Brooklynn also freak out over wallsocket’s underscores album. they make the rest of the camp fam listen to it

it’s okay to Not be Okay around each other. they’re the group jokers so they understand the pressure to feel like they have to be optimistic all the time, and they occasionally vent to each other

Sammy introduced Kenji to Lilo and Stitch (her favourite movie) and they had a sleepover where they watched it together. they were both sobbing buckets by the end. to this day, they can be trusted to always cry when watching Lilo and Stitch

they have matching Lilo and Stitch t–shirts (specifically these ones). Sammy wears the Lilo t shirt and Kenji wears the stitch one

adhd4adhd. they video call whenever they need to do homework so they focus better

they roughhouse and play–wrestle together a lot. they don’t have to worry about being gentle on each other because they know the other can take it

Kenji often sends Sammy date ideas. Sammy usually responds with, “how are you and Brooklynn still together if these are the types of dates you go on?” /teasing

as they get older, Sammy acts more like a mother to Kenji. not like what Mrs Bowman is to Kenji, but Sammy will scold him and kiss his forehead and call him “baby” (Kenji tells her “your Texan is showing” when she says that but internally he's so happy)

Kenji is very clingy, and Sammy is the person he feels most comfortable asking for a hug (until he starts dating Ben). she’ll always, always hug him. usually for at least a minute long

they’re very physically affectionate but tbh that’s just how they are. Sammy and Kenji have platonically spooned so many times (Kenji’s the little spoon)

they have a text in–joke where they texted back and forth “HUGS YOU UNTIL YOU EXPLODE” when they were both feeling down. it gets shortened to 🫂💥 and they send it to each other every other conversation

whenever Sammy and Kenji see each other, they yell “BOAT!!!” and Sammy hugs Kenji so hard she lifts him off the ground

their relationship is usually pretty light hearted and easy, but occasionally they need to cry into the others' shoulder and that's Okay

Sammy's always sending the camp fan pictures of her farm animals. Kenji keeps them all in a digital photo album and sometimes scrolls through them and smiles

between camp cretaceous and chaos theory, they both really got into sitcoms. they've spent hours watching friends over discord. Yaz loves greys anatomy and Sammy and Kenji both agree they hate it

they wrote letters to each other a lot after Brooklynn died and the group drifted apart. Kenji didn't want to lose a friend and Sammy was always a solid, reliable person in his life

they also sent a lot of care packages to each other (mostly Sammy sending them to Kenji, because Kenji barely has a postal address, let alone supplies to send regular boxes of stuff to Sammy. but she never stops sending them. she knows he needs them)

Sammy tried to convince Kenji to forgive Darius a few times. he did not hear her out. he started mailing her less after that

in Italy (jwct s3) when the others went to Malta, Sammy finally opens up about her family issues. Kenji is the first person she properly tells. she hadn't properly told anyone before, and Kenji is the only other (known) person in the camp fam who has family issues

the same night as that conversation, they spoon together. this time Sammy is the little spoon. she needs to be held

Sammy is so incredibly grateful she has Kenji — a friend she has no conflict with — to help her through this. they grow even closer as a result of their time spent as a duo in jwct s3–4

their duo nickname is BOAT (ofc) but after chaos theory, they consider renaming them to Biosyn bastards (“get it... bastards... cos we don't have dads?” — Kenji) but they're too attached to boat because they find it so funny

after chaos theory, Kenji started writing poetry as a coping mechanism, keeping all his writing in a little notebook. Sammy accidentally found his notebook, and Kenji was so embarrassed because “you probably hate this, it's so bad, oh my God...” and Sammy's like, “i don't like it... i LOVE it!” and gushes over it to make him feel better

after that, Kenji sends her stuff he writes cos he trusts her to be nice about it

Kenji also starts sending her care packages in return for all the ones she sent him. the first one has a note that says, “consider this one of many i owe you. love, Kenji”

he then receives a very strongly worded letter about how “you don't owe me anything” and “i was just looking out for you” and it's “what any good friend would do” inside another care package

when Kenji is properly dealing with his mental health issues post chaos theory, Sammy is so supportive, even though she doesn't have any good therapy related advice like Yaz does. she's subscribed to a mailing list of daily mental health affirmations, and she forwards them to Kenji. she congratulates him for finally going to therapy and offers to throw a recovery party over discord (they do that and have a blast). she tells him something nice about her day to brighten his day. usually it's a picture of a cute farm animal, but still

Kenji will always be a tiny bit scared of her. even though she's one of the nicest people on the planet and she's five inches shorter than him, he knows what she's capable of. he’s seen her scare off fully grown men with a pitchfork. he's seen her take down people with her capoeira moves. he is NOT messing with Texas

as much as Sammy loves Kenji, if he and Yaz are arguing, Sammy will always side with Yaz

they do silly shit together. trampolining? of course. play on playground equipment? absolutely. jump on the mattress? as long as they don't break it, hell yeah!

one halloween they go as Chapelle Roan and a passenger seat (im drawing this TRUST)

Sammy gets Kenji into Chapelle Roan, and he loves it. when he first listens to good luck babe, he texts Sammy: “good luck babe was so good, i dreamt Ben and i were lesbians last night” and Sammy laughs so hard she gets a stitch

they are a karaoke POWERHOUSE. Sammy has an incredible voice, Kenji's a good singer, and they both have heaps of self confidence (aside from the debilitating self doubt but yk) and great stage presence. they duet all the time

nothing romantic has happened between them and nothing ever will. however, if they're in a situation where they don't want to out themselves as queer, or it's unsafe to be queer, they'll pretend to date. someone's making unwelcome advances on Sammy at a bar and this person is wearing a Maga hat? her Totally Real Boyfriend Kenji will call her and verify that she's taken (Ben and Yaz do the same)

sometimes they get mistaken for a couple (without them saying anything), and it annoys the shit out of both of them. they'll usually play along so it isn't awkward, but internally they're going “EW EW EW NOPE THAT IS NOT MY PARTNER”

once Kenji “proposed” to Sammy to get them free dessert at a restaurant. Yaz and Ben both found this really funny

Kenji walks Sammy up the aisle at her wedding (she's marrying Yaz obvs). when Sammy asked him, he was so touched by the gesture, he cried. (Ben had a similar reaction when Yaz asked him to walk her up the aisle)

Sammy makes a scrapbook every year of photos the camp fam take, and Kenji is pretty good at regularly taking photos (Ben is terrible at it) so he always prints photos he takes out for her and mails them to her and Yaz's house

i feel like a dying soldier on the battlefield but i don't have much time left - my laptop's on low battery and it's charging but it's on its last fucking legs. it's worked for five years, i think it's time for it to retire peacefully. even if it has a few more weeks left in it, i'll have to use it sparingly so i probably won't have much time for tumblr :'((( since i can only access tumblr on my laptop, that means i might be offline for a while. im going on holiday for a week and i have potential library access after that. i don't have private access to my tumblr until then (this acc is hidden from my irls for various reasons).

there was this giant fucking dragonfly in the kitchen today, i mean HUGE and i'm terrified of the huge dragonflies so i screamed "JESUS MOTHERFUCKER" at the top of my lungs and my sibling yelled "whats wrong?" and like a little baby i screeched "THERES A GIANT FUCKING DRAGONFLY" so they came running downstairs to get rid of it while i took my food and into the garden for my dear fucking life. they went to get the spider catcher from another room, and while they did that, i saw the dragonfly leave the kitchen and buzz into the garden, so i called to my sibling "it literally just left" but they didn't hear me, and i thought, hey this would be really fucking funny if i just said nothing, so i watched my sibling look for this dragonfly for a full minute, giggling into my peanut butter chiabatta, before they called to me in the garden, "it must've flown off or something" and i said "it flew off while you were getting the spider catcher, i just didn't say anything because it was funny to watch you look for it" and they marched into the garden and attacked me with the spider catcher
