I’ve already posted a link to this topic before in previous unit research journals but for those of you who can't be bothered scrolling all the way through, here is a link to a reminder site that I have actually posted infographics to myself.
Love the irony.

C2 - Bold Park Foliage (Idea)
Similar to the design of a centre piece hanging above a bridal party I thought to incorporate this concept into the exhibit - bring a little of the outdoors in.
Using a thick tree branch as a base and then tying bush leaves/foliage to it or draped down from it with clear fishing line and arranged in a chaotic array would soundly represent the bushland around the park. I plan to hang this from the beams in the main room and use it as a room divider (needs to come down to at least a toddlers height).
Another way of using it is to incorporate it in the same manner the information panels are hung from the metal frames.

I liked the idea of incorporating audio into the exhibit as it brings a different aspect then simply reading words off of a wall panel and acts as a way to engage the viewers.
 Audio Idea:
I’d like to have an Audio machine which outputs to plugged in headphones at the Natural Environment - ‘Birds’ section of the Exhibit. The idea is to have an Audio file of a lady talking about the birds that will be depicted on the information panels in front of them - giving a short intro and then a clip of the birds call/chirp/noises.
Seeing as different species do not sound the same it would be interesting to have a little sheet with 3 or 4 multiple choice questions and right at the end of the audio some of the bird noises are played over individually and you have to guess which one it is on your sheet. Then the audio re-loops for the next person. Both fun for Adults and Children.

Left: The old design - Right: The new revised design
Im not entirely sure how I feel about the change; as much as I love the realism and depth of detail and colour in the new image, theres just something about the two dimensional simplicity of the first one that sits well with me.
Your thoughts?

C1 - Interior (Ideas)
The interior acts as a foyer for the offices of ECU staff and Gallery 25. I want to change it yet keep it simple at the same time. Collage of inspirational images:

C1 - Foreground/Landscape
The current area is covered in a lot of foliage, blocking everything. So for my designs I've decided to strip everything, start bare, then work my way into adding items. Since the area is on a slope i have decided to incorporate a form of step in all my designs and also a version of a study area seeing as its such a large open space why not put it to good use. Here are three designs I've come up with.
Idea 1:

Idea 2:

Idea 3:

I’m leaning more towards ‘Idea 2′ as its simple and not to overcrowded with is what i need if I'm going to add a facade and possible bill board design. However I'm thinking of incorporating the round seat and lighting design from ‘Idea 3′ and taking some aspects of my main design out.

One of Michael Murphy’s intricate illusion designs. From front on it appears simple yet when the camera pans around you notice its hundreds of black balls attached to string placed in a detailed display. Amazing!

C1 - Sign (Ideas)
It was mentioned that there isn't any signage at the front of ‘Building 10′ letting you know that it was the design school or ECU for that matter. Which is an issue considering it is now considered the main entrance for the Mt Lawley campus. I have come up with a few ways of possible fixing the issue.
Sketches:
Tumblr media
Idea 1: Is a version of electronic screens displaying the school name and any other information - if we could get them to be touch then it would turn into a great campus directory.
Idea 2: Is a mind bending design that I have seen done by Marco Cianfanelli with his Nelson Mandela sculpture and Michael Murphy with his many illusions. A sculpture like feature would make use of the frontage and fit perfectly with the theme as well as spelling out ECU - Two birds, one stone.
Idea 3: Is an inspirational take of Greg Klassens River collection but converting it to a standing stone or metal 3 piece sculpture. Each section contains one of the ECU letters.
Idea 4: Is a simple idea that is found on the front of many old University buildings. By placing lettering that reads “School of Arts and Humanities” no one will ever get confused for what the building is.

I can't get over this door, I love it so much!
Just imagine if it was set up with sensors to open automatically then magnetised to lock into place after. The entry way can say so much about a place and this on the front of Building 10 would scream design school.

C1 - Entry Door (Ideas)
Building 10 is so large and the door is so small in comparison I feel like the entryway is being swallowed by the structure and overlooked. I want to re-design it on a grander scale. Something that screams “Here I am!” Unfortunately due to the architectural nature, there is a 50cm pillar, right in the middle of the entryway. I have come up with some designs to combat these issues.
Sketches:
Tumblr media
Idea 1: The doors will swing Inward and end up on either side of the pillar (will have a frosted pane in front) - therefore creating an entry and exit for traffic flow during events and utilising the space behind the pillar that would otherwise be empty.
Tumblr media
Idea 2: I am leaving the window to the right of the pillar but making it a whole frosted pane and just simply making the doors a lot taller taking up the whole 4m space.
Tumblr media
Idea 3: These doors will open outwards on either side of the pillar (frosted pane in front) If necessary they can be fully opened like concertina doors for events. Ie. Grad Show.
Tumblr media
Idea 4: I am in love with this doors, they are a Kinetic structure made by Klemens Torggler and are not just doors but a sculptured piece of manoeuvrable work. The will be either side of the pillar and slide over to the frosted window panel on either side.
Tumblr media
Idea 5: Is a last minute idea but i think a large glass door on the left side of the pillar that slides across like a barn door to the frosted window on the right is a simple yet grand statement.

C1 - Facades
Though of using a facade for the front of Building 10 as it’s an easy fix to an otherwise drab exterior. The simplest design can make a massive difference. I drew up a few possible ideas, all incorporating the current red panelled facade like feature as it appears to be a structural element that flows the whole way around the building and removing that would be a large feat.
Sketches:
Tumblr media
At this point in time I currently like three designs; the curved over tiling that hits the landscape, the pyramid squares that protrude off the building and the the mismatch vertical square metal design. I will have to think about the landscape and see how each facade will flow and fit with it. As I want everything to be one harmonious design.

C1 - Fire Hydrant Booster (Idea)
The Fire Hydrant Booster box which is located right out of building 10 is currently an eyesore. As much as moving it a fair few meters to the right on the other side of the path would be ideal, it would cost a lot of money to dig up the pipes and lay a new line just for a design purpose. Which means I will need to come up with an idea of reducing its ugliness.
Current Fire Hydrant Booster box:
Tumblr media
Researching Fire Hydrants i found that in other countries they colour code them for certain reason so that firefighters know how much water is available and whether to call for additional resources. However in Australia all the boxes are painted a red for rapid identification in an emergency. So there goes the Idea of painting over it.
The clearance around a hydrant is front and sides as it has to be accessible. It doesn't say anything about the back after all they put hydrant boosters onto walls, so I assume the space behind is usable. Since when I think fire hydrant, I think water, why not turn it in to a drinking fountain. I came up with a few possible fountain design ideas.

C1 - Electronic BillBoards (Idea)
I like the Idea of possibly introducing the idea of electronic billboards. Considering we are in such a tech savvy age and it can depict an array of ever changing images, videos, sound and information about University events, I think its a great idea to incorporate. The question is; can I manage it without it appearing tacky or out of place.
I researched a few examples and came across the one that was built around 2014 in Times Square, New York City. The size of it is astronomical, apparently measuring in around 8 stories tall and the length of a football field. Definitely hard to miss.
Tumblr media
If I was to integrate the billboard screen, I would place it from the edge of the window just outside the door and take it all the way to the end of the right side of the building and up to the current protruding red panelled facade design. Not as large as the one in Times Square but still measuring at 15.4m X 4m.
As it would be placed over the current window of the Gallery 25, I would like to display works from the gallery placed in such a way that it acts like if it was an actually window into the exhibit. Like a little teaser to draw people in.
Implementation Sketch:
Tumblr media
I also thought of adding another billboard screen to the top left of the building, depicting a change of images/scenery. or even a stand alone image that could change every month, so that it acts as a intriguing new facade each time.

C2 - Traffic Flow
Display design choices and directional foot traffic flow are powerful and important elements of an exhibit. Planning them out will ensure one way path through and stop congestion and confusion from people.
Examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The categories I need to take into consideration for the Bold Park Exhibit sections are as follows:
Introduction -
Size
Location
Setting.
Natural Environment -
Geology
Landforms
Hydrology
Soils
Vegetation
Fungi
Birds
Reptiles
Invertebrates
Human Use -
Aboriginal use
European use before park
Establishing the park
