So we’ve all seen these images somewhere or another. I don’t feel like qualifying everything I say with “in my opinion,” but 11 years later, fantastic scene, some of the most engaging exposition, direction, and animation for the time, and one of the most satisfying twists in the series, all of which has contributed to Mine being one of the best and most beloved antagonists Yakuza has to offer. His influence on the overarching plot and the execution of antagonists in subsequent releases (notably Ryu ga Gotoku Online and the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon, as well as Yakuza 0 to an extent) is undeniable.

Crucially, he manages to do all of that while being gay. The first explicitly gay main character in Yakuza, in fact. Back in 2009.

Among Western fans and sometimes their alleged “Japanese friends,” this is a hotly contested concept. So much so that once a year (Update: just kidding it’s way more than once a year), without fail, Mine’s page on the Yakuza Wiki is edited to remove Daigo as his romantic interest. “His dialogue is insubstantial,” they argue, “It can be interpreted differently; it’s just a liberty taken by the localization team; and anyway, I mean, who knows what he could have meant by ‘loved’?” 

That sounds fair to say. It’s not a bad thing, generally speaking, to take into account the potential differences in meaning between the localization and the original Japanese. And hey, even if Mine’s own words,「好きになる」 (suki ni naru, lit. “to come to like” or “to fall in love”) have a clear romantic connotation in this case, at least as estimated by two professional teams of translators, it’s technically true that it can be interpreted in other ways. You know, even if that’s a phrase I can count the number of times I, and at a guess, the localization teams have seen used by an adult in an adult drama platonically on one hand.

Fortunately, we don’t have to rely on individual interpretations of the scene, the localization team, anyone who signed off on the localization, Yakuza 3 as a whole, or even Mine himself to understand exactly what he was talking about! We have multiple external secondary sources in Japanese that clearly state Mine was in love with Daigo.

In short, if you believe those 9 screenshots are all we have to go off of, if you’re convinced the localization teams’ decisions were made in error both times, you’ve been misled.
