She leans in close--closer than needed, really--and uses two fingers to press it to the familiar green fabric of his jacket lapel. “I am giving you a gold star.” She adjusts his collar just so and pats his chest, brimming with satisfaction. She bites her lip, trying to suppress a grin, but it comes through in her voice anyway. “And like, well, you know. You know why.”

Because Anzu dumped me, she does not say. Because we drifted apart and I tried to make myself feel better about it in the worst possible way, she does not say. Because I thought she was my forever and when we broke up my whole future ended. It was like the me in New York had died, she does not say.
