RPDR S12 Ep8 Review

Look who’s back, back, back again! I haven’t really posted much in the last week despite the fact that I obviously have the time (fuck this quarantine) but I figured I should keep up with the episode reviews now that I’ve started them. We all know I wasn’t sad to see Brita go last week, but I was rather upset at Jan not winning the challenge like she should’ve, so you can just imagine how this review is going to go. Let’s get into it!

I’m just going to skip to the runway/airing of the commercials because the first half of the episode doesn’t really matter. The editing always makes the front runners look like they’re doing badly and sometimes the bottoms look like they’re doing well so fuck the producers and their meddling. Anyway.

Category is...Black Wedding!

1. Jackie Cox: Jackie knows her aesthetic and she stuck with it this week while at the same time, telling a story. Was it the most polished look? No, but I still appreciated what she was giving. Also, her commercial was hella funny and definitely deserving of the top.

2. Jan: UGH Jan looked so fucking good! Her face was beat to the Gods and this dress is beautiful! I absolutely loved the “I Don’t” on the back and her whole story line of swallowing the ring was genius! Also, I don’t think her commercial was that bad...maybe I’m just biased. I do see how it was very one note, but at least that one note was enthusiasm. (shade intended) We’ll get into Jan’s fate later on, but I think she looked perfect and deserved to be safe this week.

3. Jaida Essence Hall: I think Jaida looked flawless and expensive, but at the end of the day, it was just a pretty dress that didn’t really tell a story. Also, her commercial was good but not worth writing home about. I feel she was very middle of the pack this week which is honestly not a bad place to be right now. She deserved her safe status.

4. Gigi Goode: Gigi looked so damn good but it’s also what we’ve come to expect from her by now. Her commercial, however, wasn’t great. There were some laughs in there that the judges didn’t even crack a smile at which I found unfair, but I do think the only reason she wasn’t in the bottom two was because Ru loves her so much. Plus, whoever went up against Widow was bound to go home, but more on that later.

5. ...I’m not going to say too much on this one for obvious reasons...but whoever designed this look does need a shout out. Also, to those that felt this queen deserved to be in the bottom two are letting what she did outside of the show cloud their judgement when viewing what she’s doing on the show. The commercial wasn’t terrible, the look was well executed, and we all know she’s unfortunately not going anywhere anytime soon so we’re just going to have to get used to it. Now, moving on to more deserving queens...

6. Heidi N Closet: Before we talk about what happened in the episode, I want to make it well known that it pisses me off that Ru refuses to call Heidi by her full name. I’ve heard worse drag names and I don’t think it’s fair how she gets picked on for hers. Fuck those bitches. That being said, I think Heidi did a good job this week. She looked beautiful on the runway and her commercial was fucking hilarious. I do think someone else was more deserving of the win though, but more on that later.

7. Widow Von Du: DAMN Widow looked so good on the runway! The dress, her makeup, those contacts. Amazing. Her commercial though was definitely the worst of the bunch. It broke my heart to see her crumble like that and I honestly kind of blame Ru for reminding her that she hasn’t won a challenge in a while. Way to shake her confidence before a big challenge, Mr. Charles! And if you’ve watched Untucked, wasn’t it simultaneously heart warming and heartbreaking to see her have such a vulnerable moment in front of her idol?! This will definitely be an episode she’ll never forget. (P.S. Excuse the bad picture. I couldn’t find a better one online)

8. Crystal Methyd: I LOVED CRYSTAL’S LOOK SO MUCH!!! It was spooky, it was campy, it was different, and yet it was kind of glam at the same time? Her makeup looked great and she is probably the most versatile MUA on this whole season, TBH. I also found her commercial fucking hysterical so she was the clear top in my eyes. Great job, Crystal! You and your amazing mullet made me so proud. (Again, bad picture. Not my fault the girls aren’t posting all their looks themselves)

Now let's compare the top and bottom queens to my tops and bottoms.

Actual tops: Jackie, Jaida, Heidi, and Crystal.

MY tops: Jackie, Heidi, and Crystal. I think Jaida deserved to be safe this week, not in the top. However, it seemed you were either in the top or the bottom this week, so I can forgive it.

Actual bottoms: Jan, Gigi, She Who Must Not be Named, and Widow.

MY bottoms: Again, considering it was only tops and bottoms this week, I can agree with this. HOWEVER, I think it should’ve been Gigi and Widow in the bottom two, NOT Jan. This fucking show and their meddling producers. They clearly put Jan in the bottom because they knew Widow could beat anybody and they didn’t want to risk Gigi going home. Plus, their lack of love for Jan has been apparent since the beginning. Fucking assholes.

Winner of this week's challenge: Heidi

MY winner of this week's challenge: Crystal. I really think Crystal did amazing this week. Both her and Heidi’s commercials were great, but I think Crystal’s look was better. And despite my above complaint about the show picking favorites, it almost surprises me that Ru didn’t give Crystal the top spot just for finally embracing her fabulous mullet. I’m not mad that Heidi won though, I just would’ve given it to Crystal.

Winner of the lip sync: Widow

MY winner of the lip sync: Widow OR a double save. It broke my fucking heart to see Jan in the bottom, but I also knew Widow wasn’t going anywhere. She’s a phenomenal lip syncer and she was performing in front of her idol, FFS! I do think Jan held her own though, and I so wish it could’ve been a double save. But I bet you anything the producers thought that Jan’s story line was up and they were going to send her home, even if Widow had thrown the lip sync. Those fuckers didn’t appreciate Jan for the star that she is and I’ll never forgive them for it. #JusticeforJan 💔

RPDR All Stars Winners Ranked!

#5 - Chad Michaels, AS1: Who invited Cher to the party?! Just kidding! As much as it broke my heart to see Raven get second place again, Chad really is an All Star in the drag definition of the word. She proved on both season 4 and AS1 that she's super versatile and can serve up more than just Cher which was amazing to watch. The first season of All Stars suffered from a lower budget and that God awful teams rule, but I was happy to see Chad come out of it on top! Get it girl.

#4 - Monet X Change, AS4: Ugh, I love Monet. There has legit not been a winner of All Stars yet that I haven't liked, but I want to make it known that Monet is only low on this list because of how great my top 3 are. Monet, or as Trixie likes to call her, "pretty Bob", was super loveable on season 10 and then even more so on All Stars. Read my next entry to see how I felt about the double crowning, but that doesn't change how I feel about Ms X Change as a whole. She's hella funny, a great performer, and if you haven't watched the X Change Rate yet, you're missing out because this girl is a natural behind the camera. As Laganja Estranga once said, props to ya mama, because you are incredible 😘

#3 - Trinity Taylor, AS4: This bitch fucking kills me. I'll be honest, I've only watched All Stars 4 once or twice, but I've seen season 9 AT LEAST half a dozen times and each time I watch, I find more and more reasons to love Trinity! I was very excited to watch her on All Stars and even though it wasn't my favorite season, I was still very happy that she got another chance to show us her charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent dahling! I've also talked to viewers that were more invested in this season than I was and many of them thought that she should've been the stand alone winner instead of her shared win with Monet. Again, I didn't get too invested in AS4 to care enough about that and I do love both of these queens, but I do find it weird that this was the season that Ru chose to crown a double winner. I can think of another season that deserved it more (*cough cough* AS2 *cough cough*). That being said, I adore Trinity and her siliconed booty very much and I'm glad her dream of winning an All Stars season finally came true!

#2 - Alaska, AS2: Hiiiiieeeeee! I'm currently rewatching this season and with every viewing, I love Alaska even more. Yes, I am admittedly a way bigger fan of Katya and yes, I would have loved it if she won, but despite my comments in the last entry about wanting a double winner, I honestly think Alaska wanted it more. Fuck, she NEEDED it; didn't you see her temper tantrum after the makeover challenge?! That definitely wasn't one of her finer moments, neither was saving Roxxxy when she didn't deserve it, but I'm still happy that she won. Plus, I love Bro'Laska and the AAA Girls and her music is very Alaska, put it that way 😂 and in case you were wondering, she doesn't wear wigs, that's her hair! #themoreyouknow

#1 - Trixie Mattel, AS3: As if I would put anyone else as my number one. I am an unapologetic Trixie Mattel stan and I don't care who knows it. I'm not going to fight with you if you don't think she should've won because that's not what this list is about. The truth of the matter is, she won and she's my #1, and not just because of AS3. I have every album, song, and cover she has ever released and I've watched both her documentary and comedy special at least 3 times in the last month, let alone ever. I've also seen every episode of UnHhhh, the Trixie and Katya show, Queens Who Like to Watch, and Trixie & Katya Save the World more times than I can count. Bitch, I travelled to the States (I'm from Canada) to see her Grown Up Tour only for the show to be cancelled the day before thanks to the fucking Coronavirus. I spent two weeks in isolation after for this hooker! Whether she's Trixie or Brian or a fucking terrible Ru Paul impersonator, she's my girl and no one else deserves this spot.

Disclaimer: the following list is MY opinion so don't come for me. Also, this won't be including All Stars winners, I'll do a separate list for that!

#11 - Tyra Sanchez, S2: Don't even get me fucking started on Tyra. I was 100% Team Raven and I'm still not over it.

#10 - Bebe Zahara Benet, S1: Elephant in the room; season one just kind of sucked. Bebe did the best she could given the low budget and lackluster challenges and ultimately came out on top because of it. I personally liked Nina Flowers a little more but I’m not mad at Bebe’s win. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of her on AS3, even though her extreme confidence was rather amusing. I do love saying “Kamerooooon” though!

#9 - Violet Chachki, S7: Another disclaimer: I don’t dislike anybody on this list below Tyra, they’re just victims of not being my favorites. Violet started off in episode one being not extremely likeable, but that changed over the course of the season and by the finale, I had basically accepted the fact that she was going to win. I was Team Ginger though and let’s be honest, it was between her and Violet because Pearl had no chance in hell of winning after “is there something on my face?” gate. I do appreciate Violet’s art and I love that she seems to be pretty close with some of her season 7 sisters. And no reveal, at least in my opinion, has ever come close to Violet’s fall runway. Just saying.

#8 - Aquaria, S10: On first viewing, I didn’t NOT like Aquaria, but I didn’t love her either. I was actually rooting for Eureka to win because it’s high time a big queen places higher than runner up! Rewatching it though, I do see why Ru gave her the crown; her runways were perfect and for such a young queen, she was so fucking polished. I was Team Miz Cracker in that iconic “twin” rivalry, but again, I don’t hate Aquaria, she just isn’t one of my top faves. I do respect her and her drag and I’m sure with age, she is just going to get that much better (if that’s even possible)!

#7 - Raja, S3: It almost breaks my heart not to have Raja higher on this list but it's no fault of her own, some of her fellow winners are just that great. Despite being a part of the Heathers clique, I found Raja to be not at all like her shady ass friends. She was the classiest of the bunch (though I do love Manila too) and she metaphorically pissed on that fucking runway every episode. I always found her very attractive out of drag, so that was an added bonus. I was extremely happy when she won! TOOT!

#6 - Sasha Velour, S9: I just went to Sasha’s “Smoke and Mirrors” show in the fall and it reignited my love for this bald queen. I adored her on season 9 and even though most people were expecting Shea to win, I wasn’t mad when she won instead. Her lip syncing at the finale was EPIC and I do believe she beat Shea fair and square. I kind of hoped they would’ve retired the lip sync battle after this season though because I don’t believe it’s a fair way to determine the winner but hey, when has Ru ever listened to what the fans want, amirite? Regardless, I love Sasha and I can never look at rose petals the same way again.

#5 - Yvie Oddly, S11: The hate that Yvie got on her season, particularly from Silky, made me so fucking angry. She came from an honest, but caring place whenever she gave her fellow queens critiques and those bitches just couldn’t handle it (sorry Vanjie, ily). My initial reaction to her winning was slight disappointment, just because as a Canadian, I really wanted Brooke to win, but upon further reflection, I think Yvie deserved it more. She went through a lot of shit in her life and throughout filming and to see her snag the crown after so many people doubted her was so amazing. Also, I’ve met her IRL and she’s is so sweet and a fucking fierce performer. You do you Yvie.

#4 - Sharon Needles, S4: Here we have another underdog. Although Sharon’s fight with Phi Phi O’Hara on the show was iconic (”Tired ass show girl!” “At least I am a showgirl, bitch! Go back to Party City where you belong!”), she did not deserve to be put in just a “spooky” box. Sharon is versatile as fuck, and her changing aesthetic over the years is proof of that. And again, she’s a hot boy so she gets bonus points for that. Love you Sharon!

#3 - Bob the Drag Queen, S8: This season was the first I ever watched so it will always been one of my faves. As much as I loved Naomi Smalls and Kim Chi, I knew Bob was going to win it because she’s just so fucking funny. Yes, her looks weren’t always the most polished, but I adored her anyway and I love her even more outside of the show. In case you didn’t know, she’s actually good friends with Trixie and she even took over Katya’s spot on the “Trixie and Katya Show” on Viceland when Katya went to rehab. We stan a queen who’s there for her friends!

#2 - Jinkx Monsoon, S5: As mentioned in previous lists, I have since forgiven Roxxxy Andrews for picking on my little baby Jinkx, but it still made my heart so happy when Jinkx beat her to the crown. This narcoleptic ginger was adorable then and even more adorable now; I swear her laugh could cure cancer. And if you haven’t watched “Cool Mom” on WOW Presents’ YouTube channel yet, you’re missing out! Jinkx, if you’re reading this, will you be my mom?

#1 - Bianca Del Rio, S6: Hands down, the undisputed winner of the best season of Drag Race. I fucking stan Adore Delano but I was not at all upset with the outcome because Bianca was unbeatable. I. Love. This. Bitch!
