Being a henchman suuuucks dude. This latest guy I'm working for, the War-Madillo, he's got a, an Armadillo- motif, or theme, or whatever, right? That's fine, fine, I did a two-month stint with a Marmoset-themed guy once, it's not bottom of the barrel- except. Except. It turns out, he picked the Armadillo thing because he thinks that they're obligate carnivores. Which they kind of are, I mean I googled this, they're insectivores, but he thinks that they're like, land piranhas. He thinks they work in packs to take down significantly larger animals. He thinks they lay eggs in the remains of their prey. He's killed like three guys for trying to correct him. Me and the other guys are paying out of pocket to get the poor little guys in his Armadillo pit food that they can actually eat. Every time he drops some sucker into that thing we all have to draw straws to see who's gonna have to go in and gnaw on the body so he thinks the Armadillos are doing it. Thank god it's such a long drop

08: Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter

Pippi Longstocking may be my favorite Astrid Lindgren character, but Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter is my favorite Astrid Lindgren story. It takes place in a Scandinavian early medieval fantasy world and centers around Ronia, the daughter of a robber-chief who explores the wilderness around her home and learns to deal with the dangers out there. In one scene Ronia and Birk, a boy from a rivaling robber clan, get lost in the mist and are nearly lured away by the song of the Unearthly Ones (a people who live under the ground).

The book was made into a film in 1984, which remains incredibly popular in Sweden, and an animated series in 2014 by Goro Miyazaki (the anime has some really cool designs, but in my opinion the music sucked compared to the Swedish film, which has some lovely music inspired by Georgian folk music).

9: Most Beloved Sister

A short story by Astrid Lindgren that really moved me as a kid. The seven-year-old Barbro feels like her parents don't really care about her, but she has a secret twin sister called Ylva-Li who likes her more than anything else. Ylva-Li is the queen of the golden hall which can be reached by crawling down a hole under the rose bush, Salikon. One day Ylva-Li tells Barbro that she will die when the roses of Salikon have withered. Barbro refuses to believe her. When she returns to her parents it turns out that they have been very worried about her and that they have bought a puppy for her, something she has been wanting for a long time. The next day, the roses on the rose bush are all dead, and there is no longer a hole in the ground.

As a child I hated that ending and thought it was so sad. I didn't understand that Ylva-Li most likely was an imaginary friend that Barbro didn't need anymore or had grown too old for.
