Fairfield
dailyspecimen: Today I’m trying something new: putting text faces under a microscope.
Rudolph Ruzicka was born in Bohemia in 1883 and in 1894 his family immigrated to Chicago. Young Rudolph spent three years while working as an apprentice wood engraver (1897–1900) while attending night classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and weekend classes at Hull House. In 1903 Ruzicka moved to New York City to work for the American Banknote Engraving Company. He continued night school at the New York School of Art. The Calkins & Holden advertising agency hired Ruzicka in 1906. In 1910 he went solo and started his own engraving and printing studio. As a freelancer his work included illustrations, advertising, book jackets and layouts, and engraving in at least four media.
Fairfield was commissioned by C. H. Griffith of Mergenthaler Linotype as a replacement for Century Schoolbook. From 1935 to 1940 Ruzicka designed the Fairfield and Fairfield italic. Fairfield Light was released in 1940 and expanded with medium and medium italic fonts in 1949.

Alejandro Magallanes
I went to the AGI-NL day yesterday and Alejandro Magallanes, a graphic designer from Mexico-City talked about his work. I was very impressed by his series of posters for Oaxaca Cine. I love the loose grid and how the image in the center sort of determines the place of the typography and his use of illustration in combination with photography. He just mixes it all up just right. He also explained they are deliberately in black and white so they stand out in the colorful streets of Mexico. This must be every designer's dream commission to make these film posters regularly, looks like so much fun.

Samplers / Textiles in the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum
Sometimes you bump into a treasure on the internet, like this one. This Google Art Project is a good thing, giving me access to stuff :)
Samplers are embroideries that showcase needlework skills. The word “sampler” is derived from the Latin word “exemplar”, meaning “model”. “Plain sewing” samplers demonstrated proficiency at hemming, seaming, patching, darning, buttonholes and plackets—all the skills necessary for making and caring for household clothing and textiles. Check Cooper-Hewitt for more info. Fascinating.

International Women's Day
Women whose work I admire and who inspire me to work hard and give it my all. Happy International Women's Day!!
Hansje van Halem: with her meticulous attention to detail each character becomes a piece of art and an ode to patience.
Roosje Klap: anything can potentially be a letter, everything is readable.
Tauba Auerbach: takes a highly innovative approach to mechanical processes and colour and works in a wide variety of media including sculpture, photography, painting, weaving and book design.
Irma Boom: her books are distinguished by her experimental approach to formats and a willingness to take design risks.
Here's a nice interview Debbie Millman recently had with Irma Boom:
Zeloot: a fantastic blend of classic comic book illustration and psychedelic imagery.

The Fern Portfolio
During research for the design of a botanical book I came across these beauties from Francis George Heath's “The Fern Portfolio” from 1885. I love how he ‘bended’ the leaves to make em fit on the page :) More at oldimprints.com.

herman de vries
Breathtakingly beautiful, the things herman de vries (Alkmaar, 1931) has made throughout his life. There’s an extensive database of his work on his website, he’s been doing this since the 50s. He’s 83 years old, still going strong, preparing to design this year’s Dutch Pavillion at the Venice Biennale.
herman de vries. all is on display at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam until January 25th.

Carol Bove
Carol Bove is known for her simple yet intricate assemblages of found and made objects. Carefully arranged on pedestals, elevated platforms, or directly against walls and ceilings, these yield unexpected, poetic, and multi-layered meanings. These seem to derive from the interaction between the objects within the well thought out composition. Using a wide range of materials, including books, driftwood, peacock feathers, metal, concrete, foam, and loans from other artists.
In her later work she investigates shapes and loops. She exhibited on the High Line in New York in 2013 (see last picture). Has she ever had an expo in Holland? I can't wait to see her work with my own eyes.
