Noorderlicht International Photo Festival 2021: The Makeable Mind
The Noorderlicht International Photo Festival 2021 takes place from 7th August onwards at several locations in Groningen and Friesland. With the theme ‘The Makeable Mind’ Noorderlicht explores the relationship between visual culture and reality: how is our thinking guided by a rampant image culture, unprecedented technological possibilities and lightning-fast internet connections? THE MAKEABLE MIND Curator: Paulien Dresscher I Junior curator: George Knegtel Departing from photography, the 28th edition focuses on the entire spectrum of the image, both analogue and digital: from traditional photography to digital and interactive images, internet glitches, machine learning, virtual reality, street guerrilla actions, performances, sound installations and deep fakes. From the open call, but also by invitation, festival curator Paulien Dresscher – in collaboration with junior curator George Knegtel and Noorderlicht curator Wim Melis – came to a selection of some seventy participating artists from the Netherlands and abroad, who will be presented at no fewer than 15 locations in Groningen and Friesland. Paulien Dresscher: “There are more flavours than fake or not fake, with a wealth of images and stories hidden between them. Sometimes dystopian, sometimes utopian or simply fantastic. But nevertheless, exciting and fascinating. With algorithms as our personal advisors, we all think we recognise objective reality within our own bubble, but if there is one thing we can know about that truth, it is that it is not singular.”
The festival’s pièce de resistance is the multimedia installation ‘LAWKI-NOW, Life As We Know It’. Commissioned by Noorderlicht and in cooperation with MU Hybrid Art Space, the work was developed by ARK especially for the Der Aa-Kerk choir. ‘LAWKI-NOW’ is an immersive cinematic experience that combines machine learning with human craftsmanship and visitor interaction. The result is a gigantic audiovisual instrument that confronts the audience with the reality of our lives. US BY NIGHT - Roosje Klap
I’ve always been a great fan of art and of my city, Antwerp. Us by Night, a concept that combines these two things I love so fondly, excites me. Us by Night is what you could call a “design festival”, a place where artists share and express their passion for the arts with fellow artists and art-lovers.
In my previous two posts, I wrote about Wang & Söderström and Leslie David, this post will be dedicated to Roosje Klap.
Roosje Klap is a dutch artist who owns a studio for visual communication, focussing on graphic design and typography. Roosje’s workflow is pretty unorthodox, she doesn’t play by the rules. She pushes the boundaries and thinks and acts out of the box. It’s all about making communication visual.
Roosje starts her lecture by telling us about the “lingua franca” and how it could be read by absolutely everyone, even aliens. In essence that is what Roosje Klap’s design is all about; making communication for everyone.
As soon as I saw her walk out on stage, I wanted the kimono she was wearing. Later I found the kimono itself is one of her artworks. The kimono was a design for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights campaign. The design multifunctions as a flag and a kimono pattern. For this campaign, she worked together with artists such as photographers to capture the essence and the message behind the kimono.
I love how bold she is, both as a designer and as a person. She challenges our society and encourages communication. Roosje makes topics that are often considered difficult, like gender and activism, accessible. The boldness is not something you only find in the messages she spreads, her actual designs are bold as well. Bold colours, big fonts and a lot of typography.
Roosje Klap comes across as being fearless in her design, something I strive to be in my own work.

Roosje Klap and Pauline Le Pape's exhibition identity inspired by mathematical theory
Earlier this year, designers Pauline Le Pape and Roosje Klap designed the identity for A Minor State of Flux at Arti et Amicitae in Amsterdam. Having originally interned for Roosje, Pauline moved to Amsterdam after finishing her masters to work in Roosje’s studio. Together they’ve worked on several assignments and commissions in the cultural field, including catalogues, exhibitions, websites and identities.

International Women's Day
Women whose work I admire and who inspire me to work hard and give it my all. Happy International Women's Day!!
Hansje van Halem: with her meticulous attention to detail each character becomes a piece of art and an ode to patience.
Roosje Klap: anything can potentially be a letter, everything is readable.
Tauba Auerbach: takes a highly innovative approach to mechanical processes and colour and works in a wide variety of media including sculpture, photography, painting, weaving and book design.
Irma Boom: her books are distinguished by her experimental approach to formats and a willingness to take design risks.
Here's a nice interview Debbie Millman recently had with Irma Boom:
Zeloot: a fantastic blend of classic comic book illustration and psychedelic imagery.

Centre Periphery — WS at Bozen Design festival
From 16th to 20th September 2014 I've been in Bozen to take part to the Centre Periphery workshop. It was organized by the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bozen, and held by Roosje Klap, Thomas Vailly and the Zurich-based practice Gruppe. The aim of the project was to investigate on the concepts of centre and periphery, and to reconsider the city of Bozen as an island, not only geographically, but socially and culturally too. Firstly all the participants split in three teams, one for each teacher and moved around the city. I worked in the "graphic design" team with Roosje Klap. We chose to work on the idea that everything is an island or more islands depending on how you look at it. After an exchange meeting we decided to combine several statements like "The sea is an island" and relative questions like "Are we looking for an answer?". The materials were printed in silkscreen on posters, t-shirts, shopping bags and flags. Everyday, during the workshop, one of the teachers held a talk. The last one was held by Zack Keys. While the "graphic design" team was working on the identity of the project the other two teams had worked on timber structures in order to make the concept of the island concrete. The whole experience was shown on this website: LD IS AN IS LA ND
Here are a few images of the workshop process:
