Peregrinations of the Word

Just a cat-toast screaming into the ether, in need of sedation. I mostly write fandom/shipping meta + a little history content. I hope you'll enjoy it.

The historic Medici line died out in the 1700s when neither brother nor sister had an heir. The irony of this post is that people with the name Medici likely descend from abandoned children who inherited that name at random. Some may be wealthy, even generationally so, but they’re definitely not living on money from 1378. This was really funny but it’s also a case of I read it on Tumblr so it must be true. guuuuuuys
its so wild to me that the medici family still exists. motherfuckers are old money

Basically every fic I read these days has someone in the comments suggesting the author kill themselves for their audacity. c o o l It’s exceedingly odd to me, although clearly a reactionary trend, that the very youngest generation of internet users are demanding expurgated content. This doesn’t just apply to the sanitisation of fandom and ships/fic, but extends to a desire for internet communities to be carefully controlled as well. It’s also unusual that people assume that a typically ‘anti’ ship would be easily identifiable to others. A lot of anti posting assumes that people who endorse a ship know exactly what’s ‘wrong’ with it--some of the hatred is truly baffling--and choose to indulge in their depravity anyway. It leaves no room for different perspectives, but that, too, is characteristic of contemporary internet culture. There’s a long legacy in the desire to dictate what art can and can’t be and its right to so much as exist. Some of the antiship response to fic is not denouncement but digital book-burning. Laugh at the 16th-century Protestant Christians all you like, but black and white is back in fashion. And so are death threats.
"somebody think of the children!"
Honey the children are telling each other and adults to go kill themselves, i think they can fucking deal with some odd fanfic.

My kin.
Video of a kitten at a vet’s office protesting loudly as it’s scooped from the floor. Another kitten turns around the corner and walks up to the camera, also protesting loudly for its friend. From here.

Ngl, yeah it does kind of concern me that old fandom attitudes are being washed away and replaced by increasingly sanitized and shame filled viewpoints.
It makes me so sad to think that some of the niche and weird communities that had so much personality and life, the communities I spent lurking in as a child and young teen, discovering who I was and shaped my current world view. Are going to be sanded off and forgotten, in favour of a culture that is easy to monetize off of. And was created in order to further ship wars.
old fandom wasn’t perfect by any means, and I’d be happy to talk about critiques I had of it. But I just want people to be able to have a group that embraced their weird and strange quirks. That allowed genuine weirdness, not just an acceptable “normal” and an acceptable “weird.”

As somebody living amidst the world’s largest tram network, my appreciation for the accuracy of this animation is immense.

I don’t have ADHD, but this feels important for everybody to understand. I hope it can help both those living with ADHD and their loved ones to navigate ADHD better and live with more compassion. And as another person pointed out, ADHD in the American context really comes off as a death sentence. ):

This list is invaluable, and I am very appreciative towards the person who put it together. However, it bothers me in the extreme that the term Sign Language has been used despite there being over 300 different sign languages and despite all of the included resources being for American Sign Language. sighs It’s ridiculous, and yet not even unexpected, to see US-centrism and the erasure of linguistic identity on an otherwise helpful post about global languages. I understand that this will reach a largely American audience, nor is it practical to include many different sign languages (this would make for an excellent companion post, however), but the least that could be done to recognise the linguistic diversity of SL is to utilise correct labelling.
