My friend just finished playing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and had me thinking about Holmes and Watson pairs, so here's a question for you all...

I've been really enjoying watching Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, and this clip is a great illustration of why - even in a shot where the focus isn't on him, his reactions are fantastic.

The bemused delight and pride at Watson for asking all the right questions, then the kind of smouldering look that launches a thousand Holmes/Watson ships, and then the sudden snap back into focus.

Thinking about The Empty House, and how some of the feedback on the episode that I've seen says that the first part where we follow Watson going through his typical day while Hardwicke does the narration drags, that it's a bit slow or even boring and I disagree; I find it fascinating to watch Watson on his own because they are showing us what his daily life is like without Holmes. And it's not good.

We see that his life without Holmes did drag, it was, for him, rather dull, colourless, and boring.

He's so subdued, except when he seems dejected (when Lestrade tries and fails to get him to talk about Holmes), or irritated (when the judge at the inquest is an ass, when the maid at his surgery knocks to tell him about a visitor) or sad and still actively grieving after what he describes in his narration as "three long years" without Holmes.

He's bored, he's sad, he's still in mourning, and without Holmes he's just marking time. And because Watson is, as Holmes put it, "too bound by forms," Watson is unlikely to break out and make any kind of change without a catalyst like Holmes to prompt him, but since Holmes was unique he must have thought that change was not like to happen.

That's Watson's life now, and possibly forever.

It's so sad, and he thinks about Holmes every day (the note on the mantle is there so he must remember every day, if not every hour), and goes out of his way to walk down Baker Street (and probably can't bring himself to go in, their home was transformed into a museum and a shrine for the dead and it would only hurt to sit there alone, which Holmes tells us he felt later in the episode), and shuts down and changes the subject when Holmes is mentioned (Lestrade's concerned face flickers on and off in the scene where they meet over Adair's body just briefly, but long enough for us to speculate that Lestrade has tried to force a conversation about Holmes before and failed, who knows how often).

There's so much there, and the pace is slow to match the interminable slog of Waston's life. So if we think the episode drags at the beginning I believe that's by design, and it hurts.

Later when Holmes shows himself and Watson collapses, we are shown something else: Watson suddenly awake, finally returned to the land of the living along with his friend, who provides all the color in their world, who gives Watson what he needs to live. And we are relieved, and maybe as jubilant as Watson in the moment.

I always wonder how Sholmes survived 10 years without Mikotoba when in The Adventure of The Blanched Soildier, Holmes mentions Watson about 183662762 times and yaps about how he misses him and how one of the only selfish actions he’s ever made is leaving him. I really do want to know how Sholmes coped… or how he failed to cope…..
