I know I'll sound like an older lady saying this but it is refreshing to see folk working in little teams to broadcast stories through their own style of presentation and their own lens. I've worked with several such teams so far. One of the main highlights was meeting those people. What a bother it was to set this whole thing up. And there it is. Metal skeleton, humble fabric, and the same tea drawing kit from home. Bless every soul for every thought and sweat bead they spent in putting the whole thing together while I wolfed down expresso coffee nearby to remain appropriately awake. Today's gig was part of the new Pizza Hut opening event in Century Mall. Family and I got free pizza at some point because of it. Hello dearies. A whole lot of you just came over in the past couple of days, so here are 10 pieces of information about the owner of this channel: 1. I was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia a while ago. I hear that when my dad first saw my huge, octopus head, it really freaked him out 2. I prefer adulthood to childhood, so far. I'll probably be babbling about my earlier years bit by bit in the coming months. 3. I shaved my head off in a barber shop a couple of years ago. Well, I cut it very short, but as a friend pointed out, it looked like a goat ate it up. So, I had to get it clean-shaven. I don't think I'll ever talk about the real reason I cut it though. 4. I can't sleep with the lights off unless there's someone else in the room. 5. I moved here in late 2014 and went to a high school for a year before joining AAU. 6. I learned the Geez alphabets and how to read Amharic from a primary school book which I borrowed from my high school library 7. I did a few exhibition opening shows for Shadda gallery back in 2013. 8. I decided to really come back to sand art after Melat's campaign and the EBS interview I did back in March. More recently, you may have seen my work at Fendika and on Kana TV. 9. Maybe it's not a good idea to pick favourite chapters in any holy book or something, but my current favourite chapters in the Bible are probably the first chapter of John and the first chapter of Ephesians. And the 23rd Psalm, of course. 10. Happy Epiphany to you, whether Ethiopian or not. Today, folk celebrate the baptism of Jesus by John on the Jordan river. Roads were blocked since yesterday, and festivity was in the air. So here's a sand pattern I did for a university project along with one of my favourite (?) chapters from the Bible. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John testified concerning him. Hello again I am writing the caption for this post even before shooting my tea video. I have the whole vision in mind: how I'll draw the hills, what part of Rophnan's song to use, how to import a red mask on the video during the chorus to stay true to his album cover and the rest. And while picking a part of the song to go with my one minute video, I thought: this song is actually growing on me even more. Whenever people told me to do a sand video for a Rophnan song, I cringed a little or something. The ones who advised me were folk who didn't know they liked EDM until they gave Rophnan's stuff a listen. Now, I like metal rock, jazz, gospel, bla bla bla. I'm not really into EDM, not really into pop. But long story short, a friend told me to give the songs a good listen and now, I have a favourite. Yep, it's that one. I don't know. Maybe, I like it because it's the least cheesy and the loudest in his collection. And I know there's a pretentious voice in me which wants to be purely fashionably old-fashioned. But there's no purity in any era where humans as we know them lived. And music had been used to put that confusion and anger and lust and praise into frequencies and vibrations which move the frail human heart. Ahh, I'm getting carried away again.
