A humble plea to writers on AO3
Please, don't use the tag Read by the Author to say that you proofread your work!
Read by the Author is a subtag of Podfic. It's meant to be used for tagging audio works read by the author of the text.
If you wrote something, and then recorded yourself reading it out loud and posted that to AO3, you can tag it Read by the Author. That's what that tag is for. Please don't use it on written works to say "oh yeah, I read it before I posted it". It will make your work show up in the Podfic tag and confuse/annoy people looking specifically for audio works.
Thank you!

The importance of supporting creators
Do you ever wonder why there aren’t more podfics available or why people seem to make them less often these days than they used to?
Of our respondents on the Podfice Audience Survey (please take the survey and share it with your followers/friends!), only 27.5% reported that they are satisfied with the availability of podfics.
Tumblr media
However, our survey also shows that just 39.1% of respondents report that they “Always” or “Often” comment on podfics after listening, with 30.4% commenting “Rarely” or “Never.”
Tumblr media
While numbers looked much better for kudos, most creators agree that comments are significantly more meaningful interaction than kudos.
People have their reasons for failing to comment! Let’s tackle the two most common reasons people gave for not doing so: “I forget” (55.1%) and “I download them and listen later, so it’s a hassle to go back and find the podfic again” (44.9%).
Tumblr media
If you forget or it’s a hassle, and you’re happy to leave it at that - so be it! But if you’re one of the many people who wish there were more podfics, committing to giving creators positive feedback is a great way to support podfic creation without making podfics yourself.
A system that may help is to bookmark podfics when you download them, maybe add a bookmark tag to keep them organized, and then go back through your bookmarks to find stories you’ve listened to so you can give feedback. If you forgot what the podfic was in the interim, you can always swing by to skim the text fic to refresh your memory (and leave feedback for the original author while you’re there).
The next most common response, “I don’t know what to say” (42%), may go hand in hand with the less common “They only read the story, didn’t write it, so it feels awkward to comment on the story” (4.3%). What is there to say to a podfic reader? Well, a simple, “I loved this!” or “Thanks for recording this!” is always appreciated. A more personal, “This kept me company on a long drive, so thank you!” would go over great. If you want to get more technical, you can also comment on: tone, emotion, voice acting, pacing, and the choice of story itself. “You did a great job differentiating between characters,” or “You had me cracking up during this scene!” If nothing else, leave an emoji as extra kudos.
If you feel awkward, so what? It’s AO3, it’s anonymous. If you’re not sure about putting your “name” on a PWP, open a private tab and comment as a guest. If you’re not sure about your English, leave a comment in your native tongue.
Giving feedback to fan creators strengthens fan communities and increases the amount of fan works we can enjoy.

Podfic Listener Preferences: Reading and Recording
Do you ever feel like you’re making wild guesses at what podfic listeners want?
Well, it’s fair to say that you can’t please everyone all the time, but our next few posts will present data from our Podfic Audience Survey (please take the survey and share it with your followers/friends!) that may give you more confidence when making decisions about how to produce your podfics.
This data is as of July 25, 2022 with 124 responses.
1. Is my voice okay?
This is a question we’ve tackled before, but while the linguist in me wants everyone to be open-minded to the diversity of human language, the fact is that people have preferences and prejudices when it comes to voices. So let’s tackle some tough numbers:
When asked if they had ever stopped listening to a podfic for a prompted list of reasons,
25% checked “I couldn’t understand the reader’s accent.”
16.9% checked “I could understand the reader’s accent, but I didn’t like it.”
38.7% checked “The reader’s accent was fine, but their voice itself was off-putting.”
Breaking down the numbers a bit more, 54.8% of respondents checked at least one of those options.
Not being able to understand an accent is a barrier for listeners, so if you have difficulties with pronunciation to the point that native speakers cannot understand you, pronunciation practice is needed before you find success in podficcing. Your accent doesn’t need to be perfect, though. In the post tagged above, I discuss which pronunciation errors cause misunderstandings, and I’m happy to further clarify if you message with questions.
Just “not liking” a person’s accent, even though you can understand it, is considered by most mainstream linguists to be a form of language discrimination usually rooted in unconscious biases against people who have that accent. To that entire category, I say “fuck ‘em.”
For simply not liking someone’s voice, it’s difficult to quantify what makes a voice more or less pleasing to one person or another. It can be arbitrary or deeply personal. However, looking at the write-in section may comfort you, because they tend to focus on things that you can change:
issues with character voices/acting (multiple write-ins for this)
fake British accents
monotone/flat readings (multiple write-ins for this)
recording when audibly sick (sneezing, sniffling)
trying too hard to do a “sexy voice”
These are all problems with things people actively do with their voices, rather than the intrinsic quality of the voice itself.
2. How professional does my recording setup need to be?
You don’t need a full recording studio, but you do need to create clear, easy to hear audio. 68% of survey respondents indicated that they have stopped listening to at least one podfic due to poor sound quality, which we defined as “Static, popping noises, volume issues.” Here’s some general guidance on how to avoid those:
You need a quiet space to record with minimal background noise, which may be difficult in busy households or urban environments. I used to do recordings in a closet with no exterior walls. Libraries may have quiet rooms you can reserve. Hanging soft, sound-absorbing materials like blankets or foam around your recording space helps.
You need a decent external microphone. The one in your laptop won’t cut it, nor will the one on your earbuds. That said, you don’t need to spend a ton of money. If you search “USB microphone” on Amazon, you can find plenty of options in the $15-30 range. Are they top of the line? No. Are they good enough? Yep!
You may see microphones with a Popping P Filter. When you voice sounds like P, you eject a puff of air that microphones interpret as a sudden volume increase. This creates popping noises and quiet spots. If your mic doesn’t have a filter, you can adjust by moving back from the mic or positioning your mouth so it is near the microphone but air is ejected past/alongside it.
Do a test run on sound quality before you start. Test, 123! Listen back, play with your microphone settings, spend some time getting the sound quality right before you invest time in recording.
3. How fast should I speak?
According to our survey, 16.1% of respondents have stopped listening to at least one podfic because the reading speed was too fast. 15.3% have stopped listening because the reading speed was too slow. Reading speed isn’t the most critical element, but it is important and it is possible to go too far in either direction. In my personal experience in voice training, I find that novices are much more likely to read too fast.
The vast majority of survey respondents (70.2%) indicated that they’re usually doing something else while they listen to podfic, with only 4% saying they usually are not.
Tumblr media
This means that you don’t have your audience’s undivided attention. Split focus means mental audio processing speeds slow down, which means the reader needs to slow down, too.
Now, you don’t want to overcompensate and sound uncomfortably slow - no Eeyore reading, please! - but how fast your reading feels isn’t always how fast it sounds. A good reading pace may feel too slow while you’re speaking. Do a few test runs, record short passages, then listen back or ask friends to listen back for you to get a feel for the right speed.
4. How dramatic should my reading be?
Write-in responses provided complaints on either side of the spectrum. One complained about a reader that emphasized too many words, another about trying too hard to put on a “sexy” voice. On the other hand, we had many complaints about flat/monotone/droning readings.
Re-read each scene immediately before you record it. Get a feel for the emotion. Imagine this is a personal story that you’re telling to a friend. Are there parts that are difficult to talk about? Parts where you get excited or outraged or frustrated? Let yourself feel all of that while still trying to keep your reading clean and professional - those undercurrents of emotion will carry through. And not all scenes warrant strong emotion. There’s usually no reason to sound choked up or excited while describing the scenery.
Authors use line breaks, punctuation, and formatting to convey pacing and emphasis - make sure those are coming through in your reading.
When you’re not sure how you want to read something, try it a few different ways: flat, mild emotion, high emotion. Give yourself options, and then you can choose what sounds best when you go back for editing.
5. How should I do character voices?
Based on the responses we saw in section 1, we can see that character voices can be a tricky bit to tackle. Based on write-in responses and my personal experience with voice acting, here’s some guidance:
If you’re not confident in your ability to do an accent, skip it.
Use different accents only for character voices - that is, when the character is speaking dialogue - not for narration or the whole story.
Differentiate between character voices, especially if the story includes dialogue without tags (”Tom said,” “Alice asked”) to indicate who is speaking. Text has formatting to show that different people are speaking. You need to rely on a change in voice.
Character voice differentiation can include pitch (higher or lower voices), pitch variability (monotone vs bouncy), accents, pace/speed, nasal tones, gravel/gruffness, creakiness, and other speech quirks
Changing your posture and the shape of your mouth can help to create different voices. Maybe one character keeps their lips small and tight while the other has a loose, freely moving jaw. Try articulating from the front or back of your mouth, or from your nose.
Don’t overdo character voices, especially for characters with a lot of dialogue. One write-in called this “forced voice acting,” which I take to mean a voice that sounds unnatural. The harder you have to work to put on a voice, the less you’re able to focus on the emotive quality of their words. For a one-off character, a strong accent or silly voice may work, but if this is a character that will need to deliver important, expressive dialogue, make sure it’s a voice that you’re comfortable enough to fully inhabit in different emotional contexts.
If you don’t think you can create different enough character voices or you have two characters speaking together that sound similar, you can make creative/transformative choices to add dialogue tags for clarity.
Don’t use volume differences to differentiate between characters. Consistent volume, for listeners, is a matter of being able to hear or having your eardrums blown out by sudden loud noises. It’s disruptive. If a character has a quiet, whispery voice, you can create that effect close to full volume and move closer to the mic. If a character is loud and brash, lean away from the mic. You can also even out volume while editing.

Podfic Listener Preferences: Choosing a Fic
Do you ever feel like you’re making wild guesses at what podfic listeners want?
Well, it’s fair to say that you can’t please everyone all the time, but our next few posts will present data from our Podfic Audience Survey (please take the survey and share it with your followers/friends!) that may give you more confidence when making decisions about how to produce your podfics.
This data is as of April 24, 2022 with 123 responses.
1. What length of fic are you looking to record?
1,000 words can correlate to anywhere from 3.5 to 8 minutes, depending on reading speed, and recording and editing time is usually at least 3 times the length of the finished product. Recording a longer fic is a big commitment.
Tumblr media
However, if you’re looking for readership, longer may be better. Only 9.8% of respondents said they “usually look for” podfics of less than 30 minutes. This makes sense, since nearly 70% of respondents say they are always doing something else while listening, so they may not want to stop to click to the next story.
While 22.8% of respondents look for “Epic” (>3 hour) podfics, don’t feel like you have to commit to 9+ hours of recording and editing time just to get listeners. 28.5% look for podfics between 90 minutes and 3 hours, and the largest proportion of respondents, 39%, think the sweet spot is 30-90 minutes.
2. Should you record that explicit fic?
Obviously, the answer to this question first depends on your comfort level. Some people just don’t want to go there, and that’s fine!
Tumblr media
When asked to select all fanfiction ratings (based on AO3 ratings) that they “listen to most often,” our respondents showed that you will find listeners for podfics at any rating! In fact, in the most popular response pattern, 38.2% of responses selected all four ratings.
G-rated fics had a significantly lower percentage of responses (58.5%) compared to Teen, Mature, and Explicit, which ranged from 73.2-78%.
Tumblr media
15.4% or responses were looking for some spice, preferring E or M fics. Interestingly, an equal number of people said they would listen to anything but G as those who chose anything but E.
3. What relationship categories do people prefer?
Tumblr media
If you’re familiar with AO3 demographics, these responses probably won’t shock you. There’s a massive preference for m/m slash ships, with 92.7% of responses selecting this option. Of those who listen to M/M, 36% prefer M/M exclusively and 21.1% prefer M/M or Gen only.
Gen was the next most popular category, though after a large margin with just 48.8% of respondents choosing it. Of those who chose Gen, only 5% prefer it exclusively.
Multi / Poly came behind Gen with 31.7% of responses, but none selected that category exclusively. 22% chose F/F femslash, 11% of those preferring it exclusively. M/F ships are the least popular category, with just 13.8% of respondents choosing that option and none choosing it exclusively.
4. What genres do listeners like?
The results of this question, I think, are a snapshot of the wonderful contradictions of fandom. Take a look:
Tumblr media
Romance (83.7%) is the clear leader, but behind that you have ties between Fluff and Hurt/Comfort (69.9%), then Angst and Humor (65.9%). Next up was Fix-It Fic (55.3%).
Action/Adventure should actually be at 34.2% because it was added after a consistent number of write-ins brought to our attention that it should be a listed option. As such, its numbers might have been slightly higher with prompting early in the survey.
Mystery (29.3%) and Horror (16.3%) brought up the rear of the prompted genres. Among non-adventure write-ins, case fic was the most common.
5. What fandoms have good listenership?
Fandom is the hardest data to wrangle from our survey, and chances are you already know what fandoms you want to read for. But for those trying to decide if you want to start reading in a certain fandom, here’s what we’ve got:
Tumblr media
When prompted with a list of the 14 fandoms with the most English podfics, 26.8% of responses indicated they listened to Marvel podfic, 26.8% to Supernatural, 22% Harry Potter, 18.7% Men’s Hockey RPF, 17.9% Good Omens, 15.4% Merlin, 13.8% Teen Wolf, 12.2% The Untamed, 11.4% Star Wars, and 10.6% Sherlock.
The survey has primarily been distributed through tumblr and Discord, so it’s likely that it hit “pockets” of certain fandoms, leading to over-represented results. However, the results for fandoms above 10% are generally in line with the number of English podfics in each fandom, with some skewing likely related to fandom age (Sherlock has fewer reported listeners but more podfics, vise versa for The Untamed).
But if you’re thinking about a small fandom, fear not! There were forty-one write-in fandoms on our question “What fandoms do you listen to podfic for most often?” and when asked what fandoms they wished there were more podfic for, respondents provided seventy-four fandoms - and that was combining related fandoms, like lumping all of Marvel and all of DC together! The vast majority of these fandoms had just one write-in response, so while audiences for fringe fandoms may not be large, chances are good there’s at least one person out there, waiting to hear from you.
The top write-in responses for both questions, if you’re curious, were Schitt’s Creek, The Witcher, and DC.

Call to Restore the Jinjurly Archive!
Hey, podfic fans! As many of you may remember, the Jinjurly podfic archive was once a massively important reservoir for podfics. However, the archive was corrupted and over five thousand files were lost.
A collaborative effort is underway to collect and restore the missing files. If you have any podfics saved on old hard drives or devices, please check to see if they are missing from the archive!
You can find instructions and a link to the spreadsheet here.

Tag your podfics!
Of the first sixty respondents to our Podfic Audience Survey (please take the survey and share!), 93.3% said they find podfic by searching the “Podfic & Podicced Works” tag on AO3.
Tumblr media
The next most common responses, “receiving recommendations via Discord or other online chat groups” and “Following or subscribing to specific podficcers,” are way down at 63.3% and 60%, respectively. That means it’s essential to post podfics to AO3 and properly tag them.
Though there are various wrangled tags with the same meaning, the primary tag for podfics is “Podfic & Podficced Works.” For the original text fic the podfic was based on, there is a sub-tag which can be used: “Podfic Available.”

Hi! A question for the community from a small gaggle of people wanting to try their voice at podficcing for the first time - when listening to podfic, do people prefer more simple storybook voices, in which the creator could get out more fics, or prefer more honed and fully acted out fics which might take longer to create? Quality or quantity?
(Click above for an audio reading of this ask)
This is a great question! I think preferences are going to differ from person to person. I've listened to a lot of simple podfics that were just a great, accessible way to listen to a fic. I've also listened to some more highly produced podfics that I found really immersive in a way that transformed the original story. I've enjoyed both types!
Personally, I like the idea of mirroring the tone of the story itself. If the story is relatively simple, just a nice little snippet of romance or humor or fluff to get you through your day, a straightforward reading matches really well. For a story that's more cerebral, experimental, or complex, however, a using audio effects and voice acting to try to match that energy makes sense to me. (On the other hand, longer fics take longer to make in the first place, so this is adding even more work to them!)
But I'm interested to hear if any of our followers have other takes or opinions they'd like to weigh in with! What do you think?

Daredevil Fic Authors Permissions List
Below is a list of AO3 authors in the Daredevil fandom who have posted permissions statements for podfics of their works.
Unless otherwise specified, all authors request you contact them before you podfic their work, and you should always credit the author and link their work to yours. If you post on AO3, use the “inspired by” feature. Podfics of AO3 fics should always be posted to AO3 also, unless you have permission to post it to another platform. I will try to include non-AO3 contact options for authors. Don’t be intimidated - usually they just want to know so they can link/promo the podfic!
This list is under construction and not comprehensive. If you’re a Daredevil fanfic author and would like your name added to this list or are on this list and would like it amended, please send us a message either with a link to your AO3 profile permissions statement or your AO3 profile with a matching tumblr username listed.

This blog is happy to announce…
                  FRATT WEEK 5!
From Oct 25 to Oct 31, 2021, this blog is hosting an entire week about Matt Murdock and / or Frank Castle, but their exact relationship is up to you - lovers, fuckbuddies, enemies, friends, partners… you pick! You can also do a Matt-only or a Frank-only work, just don’t ship them with someone else (details in the FAQ). All versions of Frank Castle & Matt Murdock are welcome: comics, TV shows, movies, podfics @daredevil-podfic-community… All lengths and sizes, all types of fanworks welcome!
And… you know what? If you’re getting those Halloween vibes… they are totally welcome!
Each day comes with a theme:
Monday 25: Fall Tuesday 26: Box Wednesday 27: Kid Thursday 28: Body Friday 29: Bridge Saturday 30: Stitch Sunday 31: Free topic / Amnesty day if you couldn’t post before!
You can participate as much or little as you want, it’s all up to you! It can also be a new chapter of a fic, an outtake from a series, a podfic or translation… If you create art / graphic works, a description for accessibility purposes would be much appreciated. Don’t forget you can already post in the dedicated AO3 collection even now - all newly posted works will be revealed on Fratt Week, so you can start as early as you’d like ^_^ Just @frattweek us and #frattweek in the first five tags :-) More info in the FAQ (open the link in a browser!) and if you can’t find your answer, send an ask!
Banner art by @thecarelessvoice
[ID: Red sky, darker red cityscape skyline in the background. Frank is on the left wearing a green jacket and a black shirt with the Punisher skull. He is mostly facing us and turned to the right. Matt on the right wearing the classic red suit, turning his back on us and turned to the left. They are bumping fists. The words FRATT WEEK 5, along with the dates and links for the event, are at the top of the picture, and the artist’s name at the bottom. End ID]
Spread the word!
Some examples of prompt tips and ideas under the cut ^_^
