heretic 2024 kinda broke me in that it made me realise how much ive been clinging to my recently complete rejection of (or so i thought) belief in the christian god, and i need yalls input on this because i feel like im going insane.
spoilers ahead
the ending left me stumped and grasping for something concrete to better understand it and myself; the ambiguity shattered the comfort of my mind and while that was definitely the point, the introspection it triggered is giving me sort of an existential crisis.
i dont really know if i even fully understand the final message of the movie, whether belief or disbelief is right (i know that's not the point but bear with me) because Sister Paxton reaches the conclusion that Mr Reed wanted her to, that religion, ostensibly, is a structure created to control and yet she persists in her belief, and whether she even got out at all is up to mystery.
if she did and the butterfly was there then it was either a sign from Sister Barns or a coincidence since Sister Barns saw the butterfly in the living room earlier.
if she did and the butterfly wasn't there then its either a blood loss hallucination or a sign from Sister Barns
if she didn't escape then it doesn't matter either way.
her lines about prayer really touched me though, how even if its not scientifically proven to have any benefit or make any difference, it's nice to put your energy and thoughts towards the betterment of someone else.
but... in acknowledging the conversation and circumstance that led up to that, that even if religion is just a system of control that is iterations of iterations of iterations to the nth power of made up stories to understand the world and our place in it, does what we believe at all even matter?
and if it doesn't matter because it's all the same made up brainwashing system, what's the point of believing in anything at all?
but if thats the case, why does Sister Paxton still believe? even if it is, possibly, false?
what is the gain or the point of putting our energy into believing in something, in someone or in some doctrine that is not even original and thus may not even be true at all?
Why does Sister Paxton still believe in God?

the one thing that i look on fondly about joker folie a deux, besides the occasional pitying thought, is the animated opening sequence. id take a miniseries of this over the movie any and every day

Just happy as peaches to watch the ground as it come up to meet me.
