alternate ending:

Lee doesnt make it to Carters house in time for Ruby's birthday party. the family are murdered and Ruth has seemingly vanished without a trace.

in the unfortunate demise of Dale, Ruth is now the devil's primary hand in the world.

she successfully joined a convent, and for a while, bides her time becoming familiar with the convent and the other nuns who live there. once her presence is grounded, the devil starts making work of the other nuns, slowly infiltrating their minds and conjuring dolls as Dale used to make them for delivery to homes across the state and further.

now its not just Ruth but a small flock of nuns devoted to carrying out the devil's handiwork in the perfect guise, and since the convent is a staple in the community, they aren't questioned or discovered in their delivery of the devil to homes all over. its what they'd always done before, bringing gifts at christmas and easter and for birthdays of children in the parish.

when Lee finds her, the social scrutiny the FBI would face for accusing devout solitary nuns in a convent that has stood in the heart of the community for centuries of such heinous crimes makes it almost impossible to carry out a thorough investigation.

and when Ruth becomes the new reverend mother of the convent, she becomes unstoppable.
