                    “   ——i don’t need to fucking breathe,  heather  !  i need you to stop smothering me !   ”    

electricity crackles in the  air  /  tension cutting through the room  quickly after words are spoken.  hand hovers over mouth as  eyes grow wide —-  apologies form  on her tongue  but she can barely get out more than  a  pathetic  ‘  sorry,  i  didn’t mean it ’.    oh,  but didn’t she  ?   didn’t  she  feel as  though  head heather  locked a vice around her neck  /  as though  red stiletto dug�� viciously  into her chest,  pointedly  crushing the breath out of her ?   sometimes, it  was  easy   ;   easy when  they  stumbled out of biology with a fake parent’s note,   easy  when  they basically parted  the red sea as they walked through  westerburg’s  halls,   easy when  they  secured the best seats in the caf.       yet,    they laboured for those amenities  ;   standing on top of the world required back-breaking  work.     

                      “    shit,   heather.   i---     didn’t  mean to ... yell.   ”    shit.

there’s serenity in the relief she’s been granted;  laying side by side with two sets of blonde locks tousled together on the bed.  her eyes have been closed,  lashes settled upon the highs of her cheeks as chandler simply allowed herself feel  every rivet in the hand that’s become twined with her own  /  absently tracking the involuntary breaths taken  &  released.  murmured words break such a peaceful silence,  lids languidly lifting as the other girl turns onto her side to face her.  remaining on her back,  she can feel unoccupied fingers toying gently with her hair  /  bringing a small twist to her lips.  a few moments go by,  eyes fixed on the ceiling as heather considers the request.  speaking aloud what she hasn’t truly taken the time to think about sounds like a soft spot in her armor.  a place where a blade could be fit between metal plates  &  pierce the heart she’s fostered over all these years.  it’s a godsend that the past few weeks have led them to this  –  she knows full forgiveness isn’t realistic,  but being here is enough.   “  all the things i want to do,  huh?  ”   it’s a drawl;  consideration lingering in the way syllables fall from her lips.  there are many options as for how to appease the question;  most of them unfavorable or bland.  one she’s settled on sounds lovely enough  /  a plus being that it’s definitely not a lie.

“  i want to stay here.  for days,  and days,  and days.  ”   head turns so that she’s eye - level with the other blonde  &  tended brows lift as if in a challenge.  whereas duke had prodded her armor over  &  over again in the hopes of finding some weakness,  tweets had never seemed like the type to stick a blade between her shoulder blades.  even if the thought had ever occurred,  she severely hopes they had grown out of that.  here,  there’s no armor;  no red scrunchies, no childproof caps.

- mac has moles / birthmarks scattered across her back and up to the crest of her shoulders. she was one of those kids who could touch hands across her back ( one reaching over the shoulder and one reaching up the back - that one flexibility test ) so she used to play connect the dots in the mirror when she was super bored.

words spoken within  bedroom  boundaries  /  under hushed breath,  half - muffled by the  blanket curling around his neck ;    catch  heather somewhat off guard.   the  gravity of his words�� clashing with the general mood they’ve left off with  as the lights were dimmed  moments ago.   but,  it’s not only that—-  it’s  the  fact  that  similar  thoughts  have  floated in her mind,   yet kept there  &  never  spoken of.     it’s  just not the kind of thing anyone wants to hear.   besides,       wasn’t   heather  supposed to be untouchable  /  without blemish   /   without vulnerability  ?      in this room,   with marty however,      mcnamara understands that her  sympathy  (   empathy   )  won’t  go punished.     and,   here he is,   freely letting it out. 

                         “        ——- geez,  marty,  way to lay it on me.     ”    blonde tresses    are tossed over shoulder as she maneuvers herself onto her side,  head propped up in hand.    it’s a beat more until she speaks again,    soft  &  painfully   somber——       “     you ever feel totally replaceable  ?   like,  shit,   i know the  world’ll keep turning,   but...   the  worst part  ?   unmissed and totally replaceable.    ”

when tragic kingdom came out, mac listened to it every single day for weeks. by this time, she’s living in california / more independent / has started growing out of the mask she wore in high school. just a girl? an Anthem. don’t speak? will make her cry on the spot. sunday morning? one of those songs you play in the kitchen and jam hard to while you cook. gwen stefani? mac was enchanted by her completely.

i feel like the most important part to character building is having the song that your character would walk onto the screen to. but also whenever i start plotting / am introduced to a character by sb, my mind automatically starts thinking of songs/music to connect them to. it’s my way of getting to know the muse
