#BellLetsTalk about Mental Health!
Today is a very special day! For every post on Twitter or Facebook with the hash tag #BellLetsTalk, or for every text sent from a Bell phone (turn off iMessage iPhone users), Bell Canada will donate 5 cents to mental health research and awareness.
Stigma around mental health prevents a lot of people from getting the help they need. It is a common misconception that suffering from a mental illness means you are weak. If you or someone you know suffers from a mental health issue, remember that it is a flaw in chemistry, not character. Even the strongest of people will need help, There is no shame in taking medication. There is no shame in seeing a psychologist. There is no shame in being open about your illness. There is no shame in asking for help, or asking for what you need.
Help me spread awareness today by sharing this post, or making a post of your own. You are loved.
- Sarah

Are you a Concordia student looking for a part time job? Check these tips:
1. Look at all the options for on-campus jobs here: http://www.concordia.ca/…/financial-sup…/jobs-on-campus.html
2. Check out the positions on the CAPS job bank. Go to MyConcordia - Student Services - Counseling and Development - CAPS and search.
3. Check if you are eligible for Work-Study and apply. (Just remember that most of those positions are usually posted on CAPS or other places before being posted on the Work Study website) https://www.concordia.ca/students/financial-support/work-study.html
3. Check out the positions on the CSU Hojo classifieds.https://classifieds.csu.qc.ca/ (When not sure just Google HOJO Classifieds). If you are a new user, you need to register as a student to see all the ads. Graduate students are also welcome to register and view the ads.
4. Book an appointment with Career and Planning Services (CAPS) on 2070 Mackay St., Ground Floor, or call (514) 848-2424, ext. 7345. They can help you with your CV and give you tips and strategies on how to find a job suited to your interests and skills.
5. Look at other job banks, like Indeed, EmploiQuebec, Jobboom, etc.
6. Most companies have a "careers" or "jobs" section on their website, so make sure you check the websites of the places where you think you might want to work.
6. If you don't have any work experience, you might consider doing some volunteering fist. A good place to start your search is the Concordia Live Centre: http://www.concordia.ca/offices/live.html Remember that you can find a volunteering opportunity that suits your career goals, skills and availability.
7. Finally, don't forget to ask friends and colleagues, and let people know you are looking for work. You never know where help might come from. Good luck!

1. It’s getting tougher, but you can do this. Now is the time to push through. Now is the time to really fight and show yourself you can do this. Because you can, and you will. 2. Don’t hide your books, put them on your desk where you can see them so you’ll be reminded that you need to study. 3. If you can’t study at home, pack your books and go to that cute coffee shop you like so much. Sit in a quiet corner, order some tea and finish that essay. 4. Your mental health is just as import as your physical health. Take care of yourself. 5. Make a study schedule and write down everything you have to do for each class. 6. Don’t panic. If you get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you still need to study for, take a deep breath. There’s nothing you can’t do. Take a look at your schedule and write down what takes the most and least time to do and prioritize it. 7. If it feels like the school days are getting longer and your weekend seems to be getting shorter; make plans on school days to get you excited to get up in the morning. Make plans to go bowling or get some drinks with friends, do whatever makes you want to get out of bed. You don’t have to wait for the weekend. 8. Cramming a few days before a big test and getting sleep deprived is the absolute worst and so unnecessary. Take one or two hours each weekend to go over what you learned in class that week. By the time exams come around you’re prepared and well rested. 9. Everyone has an attention span of approximately 40 to 60 minutes. So push yourself harder sometimes and slow yourself down. Take breaks when needed, be realistic. 10. Don’t just look at all the work that’s still ahead of you. Take some time to celebrate the things you never thought you’d finish, but did. The boring essays, horrible presentations, difficult exams. You survived all of it and you’ll survive this too. I’m proud of you, and so should you. Keep it up, baby.

Also, remember to take study breaks!!!
Good Luck On Your Finals, Everyone!
Not that you’ll need it, because you’re going to study hard and stay calm, right?
Don’t forget to eat well the morning of the test.
Study over the week. Don’t cram the night before or the day of!
Teaching your friends about your material can help you retain it!
Get a full night’s sleep before any exam, this is most important!
Don’t drink too much caffeine before the test, it might harm your focus and increase anxiety.
If you take ADHD medication, make sure that you follow your Doctor’s instructions.
During the test, if you get stuck, skip the question and come back to it. Sometimes later questions can help jog your memory of the right answer!
Breathe. You’ve got this!
Happy Test-Taking!
Now go out and do good things.

The Ultimate Balancing Act
By Tori Mok

Today is a special day. It’s the first day of October, and Mental Health Awareness Week is just around the corner, beginning on the 5th. It also happens to be my twenty-first birthday. Such a novel combination.
Every year, I feel like I ought to be a notch better at living life. Of course it never works out that way, but still birthdays give me the chance to stop and think about where I am in life, how I got here and where I seem to be heading next.
Being a first year uni student has put me through so many new experiences, so quickly this year. I’ve tried new things, made mistakes, and learnt so much. And just as I’m starting to recognise my strengths in certain areas, I’ve come to know my weaknesses. My biggest one, no doubt, is managing my workload.
As students, we are told over and over again about the importance of time management, and the mortal dangers of leaving things to the last minute. With that knowledge instilled deep within my mind, completing all my projects on time to my best ability has been my biggest aim, and so far I’ve always managed to keep pretty well on track. And yet, in attempting to avoid one extremity, I think I’ve gone to the other. With a tireless, perfectionist attitude, I end up thinking about my work nearly all the time, and constantly dwelling on deadlines that are still a distance off. At some point, I realised that something just as important as time management, was keeping a proper balance between work and the rest of my life.
Birthdays, when spent with loved ones, have a knack for reminding me to show myself a little appreciation, and to take some time off for myself. Oftentimes the phrase “mental health” doesn’t seem applicable to us just because we have the fortune to be free from an official diagnosis. The truth is, mental health affects everyone. Our minds play such key roles in our day-to-day functioning, our emotional states, and our ability to get through the thick and thin of life. Yet it’s really easy to neglect looking after the mind in favour of physical things.
So I guess, my biggest takeaway from the past year has been that academic success isn’t nearly as important as taking care of yourself, body and mind. Nothing is worth unnecessary stress; no achievement should come at the price of sanity. Between study, work, and every other obligation, uni life is the ultimate balancing act. The key to success is not so much the height of our accomplishments, but how well we balance work and leisure to achieve a healthy mind, and a healthy life. It won’t be easy, but little by little I’m learning to curb that inner workaholic of mine, and just let go. A quote I recently came across by David Allen says it perfectly: “You can do anything, but not everything.” Too true. But although I’ve let go of a childhood ambition to do well on everything, no doubt my rested mind will thank me for it.
