Week 8
I think the biggest challenge for my client in our company will face when it comes to implementing my recommendations is just actually allotting time to working on our social media. We are a growing company and when our season starts it is pretty much all hands on deck all the time. We tend to struggle to find the time to stop and take pictures and videos while on job sites but it's a big goal for us to start this year. We aren't quite large enough to spare a guy for a social media position but the time will come. I think that we might not really focus on creating a social organization this year as much but there will be a time when we make the change and really put time, energy, and money into building up our company online as well. If we can get good at taking pictures, and creating content, this season. By the time we get to next we'll be ready to take off. Implementing anything into our social media right now is minimally effective because we are in a weird time period where people aren't looking for snow removal and it's not quite nice and warm enough for people to start worrying about their landscaping yet either, but we try. It's also really difficult to create new content this time of year and we don't have much of a content calendar built up yet. With time it will come

Week 7
Effective content is developed and shared with a plan. Best done on a schedule. Posts should try and use network algorithms to boost. Posts should be inclusive and neutral. Should use hashtags and keywords to boost posts as well. Community reach is strong. A social organization has everything to do with effective content and sharing. Without your content being effective or shared, then what is the content even doing? What's the purpose if not to be effective or shared? A social organization without viewers or customers isn't much of an organization.

Week 5
Internet business models work by finding their targeted audience. In order to know that, the more the internet knows about you and who you are the more they can target ads tailored to you. The more data they gather about you, the more they watch and record your online movements, and now even reach beyond that in your real life movements. The better the guess they can take on what you want to see and what you're most likely to click on. The more information they can grab and hold onto the more they can understand their users and use that data to their profit.

Junk News
I have definitely noticed the impacts of algorithms on facebook and instagram. My feed on my personal account is so tailored to me that it's very easy for me to get lost scrolling on content that's interesting to me and grabs my attention. I have noticed ads are targeted towards things I have been shopping for and things that I definitely want and didn’t even know. I definitely find the things I'm exposed to to be very one sided and the only things I see on the other side of any issue is just making fun of that view point. I acknowledge this and keep it in mind when conducting myself. I know that what I see on social media doesn’t necessarily pertain to the world around me in real life. On one hand I like that my content is stuff I enjoy seeing but I know my information is biased and not within my best interest. So I still use it but I take the content as it is and don't believe it for fact and do my best to try and see the other side whenever possible. Businesses and individuals should be aware of the motivations behind social media and how it uses its users. I don't know that there is anything to do besides keeping that knowledge in mind when trying to use social media for whatever they're using it for. If you're trying to reach people, learn how the algorithms work. If you're trying to get the latest news on the most controversial topics, keep in mind that what you may see may not be 100% true and maybe not be the whole story. My best advice for any social media users would be to fight the biases of the media and really think and analyze the real world and what you know in real life as well.

Consultant Post
I think some important qualities for a consultant to have, for one, would be the ability to listen. By that I mean the ability to understand the voice of the company and what the owner is looking for out of their social media. The ability to ask the right questions would also be very important. Communication skills in general would be super important. One more quality I think would be important would be general knowledge of the field, or history of doing similar work for similar fields. Knowledge of the area and customers would be important as well. If I was acting as a social media consultant for myself I'd have to figure out what my social media goals are professionally. But my strategy would be to figure out what app has the best access to the people I want to reach. Figure out what voice would be most attractive to them and start advertising my business in a way that would be appealing to customers. So far, for my personal social media I have done pretty much nothing so I'd be starting pretty fresh, but in the future I could use it to sell myself and what I have accomplished in terms of business and skills.

Week 3
Big data and algorithms are so powerful because they can influence the viewers thoughts by figuring out what will and won't grab their attention and how to keep it. They are dangerous because the controls behind the apps are seemingly unknown to the user, meaning the user doesn’t know how closely they are being watched and how much they are being influenced. The algorithms are meant to be addictive and are almost playing games using tricks on your brain without you knowing. The influence and bias these algorithms can cause isn't a good thing either, when you only see things you know and like you'll think that that's what everyone sees or what everyone should see. I think that on a personal level, if you can figure out how to discipline your social media usage, and know how it works then some usage isn't bad at all. I think that the private app has the right to do what they want, especially in terms of what a user watches or likes on said app. I don’t like that these apps access your microphone and tap into your other apps and recent searches and proximities and all that what I feel like is relatively personal information, but I think they have a right to ask for it. I think that there should be user rights as well though, like being able to opt out or those personal information type settings to be customizable or off by default. As a society, I think we're already too far deep and we just each have to do our best and try and have some self discipline with our devices.

Week 2 blog
I think social media is a big distraction in my life. It doesn’t really do anything useful for me except make me laugh at some funny videos. I think it slows me down anytime I'm doing something I really don't want to do, like homework. Because it is so convenient and so much more fun than doing my homework, I can’t help but pick up my phone after every 45 minutes of work. The internet's availability has a major impact on my life. I feel an underlying anxiety without it. It's so ingrained into my life, between communication, navigation, google searching everything, and the countless distractions, my life almost revolves around it. I'm so used to using it when I wake up and go to bed that when I'm in a situation where I can do that I have trouble relaxing. It's become a dependency I wish I didn't have. Anytime I travel and go through or stay anywhere with little to no cell connection, I become very anxious. What if someone tries to tell me something, or what if there's something funny I could be missing on social media. It all gives me a constant underlying tension in my mind. I find it very frustrating and something that's very hard to get used to and really easy to start doing again. I really want to be more aware of what I'm actually doing at all times. I'm not a fan of running on autopilot. I can't stand it when I have no idea how long I've been scrolling but I know it's been far too long, especially when I do it to avoid doing something that needs to be done.

Social Media Experiment
After I tracked my phone usage for a full day I spent the next two days actively trying to stay off of social media and my phone in general. I am a manager at the company I work for so my phone has to be used to communicate 24/7. Each of those two days my screen time was less than half of what it was when I wasn’t being conscious about my usage. I found myself inevitably more productive because I wasn't allowing myself to stop and take little breaks during my school work. I also can’t stand to do nothing so without my phone being an option I was constantly looking for the next thing to do rather than doing the bare minimum and then scrolling through instagram. I was able to focus more on what I was actually doing and spending my time on so my day seemed more fulfilling. I got so much more done in a day with just a few less hours of screen time. I've always known I spent too much time on instagram but I've never actually had the motivation to stop the scrolling addiction. Unconsciously scrolling through pointless videos doesn't actually make me feel anything more than distracted. I can say that my original intention was to go a full 24 hours without using anything but I struggled to keep the same mindset at all points throughout the day and would catch myself accidentally opening instagram and scrolling through 2-3 videos before I would realize what I was doing. Because of this I decided to go another day and each day was pretty similar. There is definitely a lot more value in a day's time than I take advantage of far too often.

Introduction to BIS315
My name is Kris Busman, I am a CMU student taking the BIS315 course. This is my junior year at CMU and I am going for an entrepreneurship degree. in addition to being a full time student I also work full time as a manager at a small property management company. I hope to learn something from posting these blogs. I hope to learn some skills that can help me improve our business. One company who is in a similar industry that I like their social media is https://www.pridehardscape.com/. I think they do a really good job of showing the transformations and services they provide for their clients in a really clean good light. Their social media has given me a lot of respect for their company.
