HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE CELL

~~ Anton Van Leeuwenhoek 1632-1723

 *Was a Dutch microscope maker. Using a microscope ,observation of pond water, pieces of food stuck between the teeth, etc.., reported that they contain microscopic organisms that are not normally visible to the naked eye.

*It was later realized that they were single-celled organisms/bacteria and      𝘌𝘶𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘢.

*First recorded as the person who observed and recorded microscopic organisms/cells. 

~~Robert Hooke 1635-1703

*Was an English scientist.

*Observation of a piece of cork tissue using a compact light microscope revealed that it was made up of a group of hollow-like units surrounded by a wall. 

This unit was called the "Cell" which means a hole surrounded by a wall.     (Cork cambium- https://bit.ly/3t81eOl )

~~Matthias Schleiden 1804-1881

*German botanist.

*A large number of plant tissues were observed under a microscope and it was   identified that they were all made up of "Cells"  

~~Theodor Schwann1810-1882

*Was a German zoologist.

*A large number of animal tissues were observed under a microscope and it was   shown that they are all made up of "Cells."

*Together with Matthias Schleiden it was shown that all plant and animal tissues are made up of "Cells".  

*This discovery led to the realization that all living things are made up of cells.  

~~Rudolf Virchow 1821-1902

*He was a German scientist as well as a political leader. 

*It has been shown that a cell is formed only by the division of a pre-existing cell. 

~~Robert Brown 1773-1858

*Was a Scottish botanist.

*Observed a spherical subcellular structure in a cell and named it "Nucleus".
