tips for timed essays?
Sure! Here’s a few tips for timed essays (both substantive and procedural) tips;
1. SEX Method
Keep a strict structure for your body paragraphs.
Will help you avoid “rambling” and going off topic bc
Its basically 4 basic sentences from which you can expand and elaborate on.
Ensures that your body paragraphs reinforce your thesis
Ensures that your arguments are relevant
METHOD
State: Topic Sentence. What is this body paragraph about? What argument are you trying to present in this paragraph?
Example: Examples which support your claim (topic sentence).
eXplain: Link argument/ point back to your thesis. How does the example illustrate your thesis argument? To what extent? Why? If you can’t link it back to your thesis then reconsider this paragraph srsly.
(YES IM AWARE IT SHOULD BE ‘S.E.E’ but people get confused with the two “e’s”)
2. Plan
No matter the time limit, set aside a few minutes to scribble down a plan.
Highlight the keywords in the qu to ensure you’re addressing the qu
State your thesis
Dot point your paragraphs (e.g. I used to just quickly list the topic of each body para + 3 sub points as per above)
+ if/when you run out of time you can quickly scramble and rewrite what you had in your plan
3. Introduction
Basic structure
1. General Context (optional)
2. Thesis
3. Signpost your structure (e.g. _____ will be illustrated by reference to B1, B2, B3)
4. Concluding line (e.g. In essence, analysis/comparison/distinctions between____will illustrate_____)
In a timed exam you don’t have the luxury of ‘writing your essay and then going back and doing your introduction’. Do it first.
Why? Because it will give your examiner a good ‘mindmap’ of your essay. If you don’t finish your essay, your examiner will be able to ascertain your argument (or where it was going) through your introduction.
4. Conclusion
Basic Structure
Opening
Re-state Thesis
Recanvas body paragraph arguments (basically go through your topic sentence)
Conclude
Typically at the high school level, you are strongly advised against introducing new ideas in your conclusion
In some select disciplines, you are encouraged to talk about ‘thematic links’ and ‘further research/ qu’ in your conclusion
5. Be strict with your time
Divide your time.
If you know the breakdown of the exam prior to the day, then write down the exact time.
e.g. 9am start time, 60 min exam
9:05 - Finish Plan
9:15 - Finish Intro
9:27 - Finish Body Paragraph 1
9:39 - Finish Body Paragraph 2
9:51 - Finish Body Paragraph 3
10:00 - Finish Conclusion
+ ofc proof reading time
6. BRING A FREAKIN’ WATCH THAT WORKS
SELF EXPLANATORY
7. Pens
Get a pen which won’t jam on you
Also have like 14706817468 spares.
I also like pens of different grip diameters - switching pens halfway through helps me relax my grip and avoid cramps
Hope that helps!
