I look on Instagram and I see friends doing amazing things like traveling the world or staring in TV shows and I feel so happy. It brings me such joy to see others succeeding. But there was a time in my life where I would have been extremely jealous. I would never have spoken it aloud but it would have been there. And it rears its ugly head still to this day from time to time. But I have the mental clarity now to say, “I hear you. I acknowledge you. And I let you go.” And then I go back to being happy for my friends. . If you have ever felt jealous or envious of other people’s success, just remember what I wrote above. You’re time is coming. It may not look like what you expected or what others have. Let’s face it. Most of us are never going to star in a TV show. But whatever it is, it will only come if you keep doing your best right now. And part of doing your best, actually the most important part, is gratitude. Gratitude for where you are. When I was going to college, it didn’t feel like success. But it was. When I made moves to NYC and then LA, they didn’t feel like successes. But they were. Forgot to post this on the 4th. On that day I started to write about how it’s only coincidence that we wound up living here. And to take that randomness to mean that we are somehow any better than anyone else is this world is foolishness. But even saying that came with a level of negativity that I disliked. So, I gave it some more thought. . Life is full of so many coincidences that we don’t appreciate. So many random occurrences that shape who we are that we barely give a second thought to. And they are all worth celebrating. They are all worth acknowledging with flags and friends and food and fun, not just on the 4th of July. But maybe that day can be a reminder. It reminds me of the story that @byron.katie told about picking up her kids socks. She yelled and yelled about it and they just never did it. Then one day when she realized that if she wanted the socks off the floor, she should pick them up. Kids don’t care about socks on floors. Why should she expect them to? If she cares, she should do it. . The folks at @lafitness, whether they be employees or gym goers, don’t care about the weights being on a certain floor. Why should I expect them to? If you’ve ever had the thought “If people ever found out how much time I waste....”, you have two problems: . 1. You care too much what other people people think. 2. If you’re anything like me, you get a little anxiety on Sunday night about the week ahead. Why? Who knows. It’s never much different than the week before. And we got through that one just fine. We always do. . All I can say is accept. It lessens a little bit that way. And when you are ready for bed, get comfortable, close your eyes and start counting your breaths. Procrastination is your mind’s way of exercising its power. It doesn’t care what it is you have to do. All it cares is about being in control. “Oh, yeah? Something I don’t want to do needs to be done? F*** that. I’m gonna sit here and binge this show for the next 4 hours. I’m in control here, not some business deadline or class project.” . I don’t remember where I heard this idea. But it rings so true with me. Last night even. I knew I wanted to go to bed early so I could get up early to go to the gym, meditate and get ready for work. But there I was, 30 minutes after my bedtime, on Instagram looking at memes. Luckily, what was going on finally hit me. So, I set the phone down, rolled over and went to sleep. . I have an adverse reaction to people who seek out attention. The Pride parade on Sunday in WeHo made me aware of this. Mind you, I am not talking about the guys dancing around in their underwear. I have started writing this post 7 times now. Nothing felt right. And I finally figured out why. I was trying to defend this quote. I was trying to defend my ideas. . And that is why all the words felt false. I was trying to present this idea in a way that looked neutral but was not. Unknowingly, I was trying to finds ways to address people’s problems with the idea before they even had the chance to respond. . We prepare our defenses before we have even been attacked. Then by the time it actually happens, if it ever even does, those practiced and perfected angry and self righteous responses take over without us even knowing. We hand ourselves over to deeply engrained patterns of thought without a second thought. . In the end, no matter if the situation is one you have practiced over and over again in your head or you find your self in it out of the blue, you do not have to react. You have the power to not escalate any situation. You simply have to decide that an argument or fight or any other situation that impacts your life negatively is not worth the time it will steal from you. . What defensive situation do you find yourself practicing over and over again in your head? When it finally happened, if it did, were you able to hear what the other person was saying to you? I’m feeling a little irreverent today. But in a playful way. So, what I am about to say my seem a little out of character when compared to the accepting and easygoing attitude I try to keep: If you hated your job as much as you say you do, you would’ve quit already. . No one is trapped in a job. They only believe that they are. I go to work every morning knowing it is my choice. If I truly wanted to, I could wake up tomorrow and never go back. Obviously, there would be consequences like having to find a new job or living on the street if I ultimately didn’t care at all about working. . But just because something has consequences, it doesn’t mean you don’t have a choice. You’ve simply made the choice that the consequences of not going to work are enough to keep you going to work.
