Hey everyone hiiii okay listen up and bear with me for a second (this doesn't apply to 99% of you at all but bear with me anyway)

I was going to use fake made-up numbers here but decided to use Ao3 metrics instead. I know they're in no way an accurate measurement of the size of a fandom, but they're the best I've got.

Even though 99% of us in the Payneland fandom are amazing and wonderful and would never harass anyone ever, the 1% of us that mistag Catwin hate as #catwin will create an unfair shit sandwich for their community

Catwin fans (per Ao3 metrics) are about 2% of the DBDA fandom and they deserve to have their space free of wide scale hate

Let's say that 1% of Payneland fans mistag their posts or create problems in their community

That is 39 people. That is equal to 4% of their entire fandom

Even if it's just a small sliver of us and the rest of us are extremely nice, 39 assholes can cause a lot of problems for an extremely small community

I've been through this before in the Shadowhunter books fandom where everyone and their mother hates the series I like and mistags hate about it, causing tons of problems for the already-small subcommunity

Please leave Catwin fans alone and be kind to them, they're nice people and deserve to have fun in their sandbox

It's hard to articulate, but there is something so...disheartening? Perhaps not surprising, per se, but something admittedly disappointing nonetheless in the pattern of responses to the Cat King, especially in regards to violence against him.

This is not to say that you have to enjoy CK or ship Catwin or engage with him in any particular way! You can feel however you want to feel about him, especially in regards to how he relates to your own personal experiences that may shape your opinions.

But to continuously see calls for disproportional violence against the most openly queer character in the show -- someone who wears skirts and is flamboyant and is sexualized and desired and who expresses desire himself -- just. Does not sit well with me.

Especially considering it is usually a call for the core four to exact (sometimes extreme) violence against him, which is so very against the way they are characterized in the show. All four of them in some fashion (and to varying degrees) experience violence themselves, and it is clear that as an agency they very rarely resort to any kind of violence. It is only used when there is an immediate threat of separation or harm. And, in the case of Charles and the Night Nurse, these actions are scrutinized by the other characters. Violence is not something they find joy in or would revel in, it is a last-resort misfortune of their jobs and afterlives.

Not to mention that CK, too, is a victim of brutality himself at the hands of the same villain that plagues the agency. (And if you subscribe to Lukas Gage's backstory of CK and Esther being involved romantically/sexually, it is domestic violence at that.)

The idea that the Cat King should be brutally murdered for making clear his desire for another male character -- in a show that blatantly grapples with hate crimes! -- is something that is just really sad to see.

I don't have any grand takeaway other than to maybe consider how (and why) you speak about wishing violence and death upon complex queer characters. Because, sure, this is just a show! But our biases and perceptions that shape how we interact with the show are very, very real.

i think it's very funny that the cat king perceives himself as this cool, confidently sexy guy who has all situations under control. and then he just messes it up. constantly. almost kisses edwin, interrupts it with the bracelet. tries to make edwin fall in love with him, makes him realize he's in love with charles instead. tries to warn edwin to make him like him, pisses him off instead. pretends to be unbothered by this, look like this 😟 instead. no one is doing it like him.

The entire DBD fandom aches from this daily. Which is why we are so lucky that so many people work so hard to keep this fandom alive through their art and stories, and the friendships we've built in the community that continuously inspires each other.

the insane experience of missing a fictional character . like you can always go back and reread the book , replay the game , rewatch the show or movie , you can always go back & see them , but you can never experience them & their story for the first time again . its absurd to miss them because they'll always be there , but you'll miss when there were still new things for them to say .

for a small time they were real & growing and changing and you hung onto every new word, but now all they can do is repeat the same story forever&ever & they're not real anymore because you know everything they're going to do. & you miss them. its fucked man...
