Tank Man Final

Here is my final piece “Tank Man.” I had a lot of fun creating this piece and I’m relatively happy with the outcome. I felt that the deadline made me work a little faster then I would have liked but I am glad that it came out not as bad as it could have. I learned a lot about art along with political/social history with doing this painting. This was my first time ever painting a tank or anything like it. I have always in the past done landscape, nature, surreal paintings. So creating something so “realistic” was new to me. Realistic in the way that its urban with streets and straight lines etc. I think I could have improved the shadowing of the tanks themselves but it is good enough. I also would have liked to add a shadow behind the street light and I actually attempted a couple times but they didn’t turn out how I liked. On the day of presenting this piece I was proud however, I showed my class and they were all very impressed, my presentation/speech itself went well too and I felt confident. To anyone who would like to read my presentation/short paragraph on the history of tank man, I will paste it below. I enjoyed this project and I love painting!
Tank Man
Just recently opening up to the world in the 1980’s, China was under a much more successful economic restructure than Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika, however Chinese leaders practically had done nothing to emulate Gorbachev’s program of “openness.” In 1989, at Tiananmen Square located in Beijing, the Chinese public believed this had to change. Inspired by a visit from Gorbahchaev and the ideals of democracy they linked with the U.S, large numbers of students and crowds collected and protested against the Chinese government and advocated for democracy. The appreciation for U.S democracy by these Chinese protesters was expressed when they erected a facsimile of the Statue of Liberty right under the giant banner of Chairman Mao. While some Communist officials encouraged dialogue with the protestors and were even commiserating, Chairman Deng Xiaoping did not feel the same. The People’s Army was sent into the city by the Chinese government and began firing at unarmed students and citizens. Tanks played a very important role in the political protests during this time. These extremely powerful and intimidating machines mowed down between hundreds and thousands of protestors; still to this day the number is unknown. Many attempted to stop the convoys but did not succeed due to their overpowered strength. However this was not the case for one man who managed to momentarily stop a convoy of tanks leaving Tiananmen Square. A photograph was taken of the event, naming the unidentified chinese man as “Tank Man” and soon becoming iconic globally. Not many images depict the Chinese repression of democracy as well as the photo of the “Tank Man.” The lone act was a symbol of resistance and represented the heroism and futility of the protests. Time Magazine named and declared the mysterious man the “Unknown Rebel” and part of the “one hundred most influential people of the twentieth century.”

Tank Man Part III.

While its not my final piece, here is an image of the painting nearly done. I had added the second tank and god my street in. The street has a lot of layers of paint on it as I kept trying to get the right grey, I want to straighten the yellow line behind the tanks and work on the white lines as well. I am going to dd a lamp post and it will look good hopefully with everything. I am happy with how this has come out so far. I think the image captures the original photo pretty well, I stuck with only two tanks because for one I didn't want to have to paint a finely detailed machine and also because I don’t think three tanks would look the way I want the piece to come off. I want the piece to feel centered and like there pressure. I like two tanks more,

Tank Man Part II.

This is the second image of my tank man. I had finished the one tank at this point and I felt proud but I didn’t love the painting a whole ton. I knew I wanted to work on the shading of the tank and the detail work. I found the detailing little trinkets onto the tank was very hard for me so I stuck with keeping a more simple design. Through painting this I found that, one of my favorite features of this iconic photo was the man himself. His posture in which he stood, his mysterious bag and basic clothing. There was something so eire and mysterious to him which I loved. No one knew the mans fate. No one ever identified him. Was he even there?? So I kept painting to possibly find this out...

Tank Man Part I.

Here is the first photo my tank man painting. The purpose of this project is to create a piece of art of any historic event from 1970-present. It is a final project given to us by our history teacher. Pretty cool opportunity to create some cool stuff. We were allowed to represent the event in a variety of ways from a puppet show to a slideshow report. I chose painting of course. Tank man is the name given to an unidentified Chinese protester who succeeded in bringing a convoy of tanks to a halt during the Tiananmen Square protests. The photograph was taken by a photographer and it really spoke to me. I loved it and new I wanted to paint it. I started off by tracing the image onto tracing paper and then transferring it onto my canvas. I began painting!

Un Bouquet by Heath Daignault

This is a still life painting I finished a little bit ago. I am happy with how it came out and it was a lot of fun to learn a new style. It is all done on acrylic on canvas. I started with the background and then worked to the table, cloth, vase then flowers. The cloth was very difficult for me and it just took time and trial and error. I am a little unhappy with how the flowers came out but I think they look alright. The composition of the flowers aren't how I like I suppose. Its like the flowers are too full but I also am just being hard on myself. The piece looks much better in lower light and I like that. I gave this painting to my parents and I had a lot of fun making this one. Proud :)

Lone Valley

Here is a painting I made over the weekend and finished yesterday. I had a lot of fun creating this piece and I am pretty proud of it. The painting is of a valley that I followed by looking at an image on the internet. I first outlined basic proportions with a pencil and then began with my sky. My goal with the piece was to create a scene with a tranquille as well as lonely feeling. I like how I the when I am viewing the piece I feel as if I am are completely alone yet it brings me a calming feeling. At first I was not a fan of the path but I came to like it much better as I finished the piece. The flowers were a nice touch and I am happy how the blue and white Lillies came out. I want to create more landscape and scenic paintings as they are very fun and satisfying to create. I love painting!

The Northern Light

I created this piece for my grandma and I am excited to give it to her! This piece was a lot of fun to create and I am very happy with how it turned out. The painting is a piece of a lighthouse asymmetric on a rock in the Arctic Ocean. Using acrylic paints I started by tracing out my basic shapes, color blocking and then detailing. I am specifically proud of the water reflections in the front. The piece gives off a sense of tranquility and accomplishment. I have been struggling recently with producing art that I have liked and I am happy to say that's not the case for this one. Its painted on a small canvas I brought from home and I am really excited to keep practicing and doing more pieces like this one. I love painting!

Fog Painting

This is my fog painting with the beginning of my cliff sides. I don’t love how they have came out but I am glad to be working on it. I think the shedding on the first cliffs rock are becoming better but I just need to keep working. Its very hard to get a rocky look but I am trying my best and learning a lot through the process. I hope I can finish this soon as I feel I’ve been working on this for quite some time. I want the cliffs to look like they are drifting through the fog and look natural in the landscape and not just cropped there.

Fog Painting
This is my fog painting so far. I am very pleased with how it has come out. It has been very difficult and taken a lot of my time but I’m dedicated to finishing it. I am planning (see pencil) to create a valley with cliffs on both sides. The cliffs with merge out of the fog and I want the fog to “slither” through the valley. I am excited to get started on this. I have used acrylic paints and brushes however I sometimes use my finger to blend the colors to get a foggy feel. I want the viewer to feel the fierce power in this piece but also feel at calm with its beauty.

ANIME DRAWING
Mr. Brown
Heath Daignault
Anime Drawing
Today I drew this character from an anime artist. My brother got me a collection of Otomo Katsuhiro’s posters and I looked up some of his art/characters and then drew this. The character on the bottom left is one of his but not the same one I was trying to draw. I had to trace some features proportions because I was having some trouble. To me this face is of a woman turning her head and glancing at someone. As if she was in a rush. It's a quick moment in time of a girl glancing at someone. I don’t know a lot about anime and have never seen one but this was pretty fun to draw and I definitely want to do more of it in the future. This was all done in pencil.

Fog Monster

Today I re colorized the forest hill and re painted some of the trees. I took Mr. Brown’s advice of coloring different values and making sure the viewer can see the different color values of the trees. I so far like the painting a little better but I am not loving it a ton. I want to make the trees still look more realistic and more detailed. Without working on it, the starting of the fog looks pretty good behind the tree’s so I’m happy about that. I can’t wait to continue to work on It !

Fog Monster

Today I painted more of the forest and tree’s and part of the fog. Im really try g to detail the trees however make them look not totally visible because of the fog. I sort of am liking it better however I’m still trying to figure all the values out and make sure it looks how I want it to. I want to make the trees look tree like with branches however its hard to keep them dark and then get them to get even darker in the back.

Monster in the fog

So today I traced out my barriers and started to paint some. I used all acrylic and pencil. The idea behind this painting is that it will be a normal valley like painting with a faint outline of a monster in the fog above the hills. So far I have found the colour of the dark green trees and began to find the color of the fog and foggy trees. I can’t wait to keep working:)

stop motion project
I made a stop motion project. I couldn’t put the video into this blog for some reason however. But its a short animation of a clay ball rolling into frame, being squished then rolling out of frame. Then there's another short animation of a ball rolling and a lego mini figure filming the ball on a film trolly. I created a full “light room” with my desk by creating walls and pasting paper in the background and flooring. I then made a clay ball and began animating. I took photos with my iPhone then brought the photos to premiere pro and put it together. I had a lot of fun and it was really fun to learn.

Surreal Art Plotting
I would like to create/remake a piece where time seems to be melting. Inspired by Dalí and one of my fave artists malena bozzini. She has a piece where a man seems to be stretching and melting with time. I would love to remake this or attempt this style. I want to make a character seem to melt through time. I think will be a fun idea for me. :)

“Creation of Memories” by Heath Daignault

This is my final piece. I had a lot of fun making this piece and learned a lot about myself and my skill doing this piece. I have learned how to shade with acrylic paint much better. In the beginning of the project I had no clue how shade with paint. However I learned how to shade with help from Mr. Brown and tutorials. The objective of this piece was to create a piece of art that relates to the words game, plant or animal. So I chose game, specifically the board game “Uncle Wiggly.” So the bird is my favorite character from Uncle Wiggly and the candy in the background is relating to Candy Land. The yellow brick road is from The Wizard Of Oz because it is also a big childhood memory of mine. I loved making this and I’m excited to give this to my mom for Christmas:)
