Ralph Hotere, 1984, silver gelatin contact prints, edition of 6, 200mm x 255mm
This exhibition on at Sanderson Contemporary, Auckland, features a small selection of works from a wider body of forty photographic portraits that Kevin Capon shot throughout 1984-85. The black and white portraits captured prominent figures within the arts at the time, a snapshot of New Zealand’s creative face of the time. The portraits are close up and personal, tightly framed on the face and intimate images of artists that have echoed through time such as Colin McCahon, Doris Lusk and Ralph Hotere. Portraits 1984-85 is a true snapshot of an era – allowing us to glimpse back while knowing the legacy of today.
Colin McCahon, 1984, silver gelatin contact prints, edition of 6 , 200mm x 255mm
Portraits 1984-85 is part of the 2018 Auckland Festival of Photography CORE programme.
Kevin Capon is an artist that uses photography to unravel particularities and conflicts in the pursuit of image-making. His oeuvre builds toward an enigmatic archive that describes human anxieties and the fading glory of modernity. Household objects and awkward figures become examples to illustrate noteworthy familial and societal phenomena. These themes are explored with a deadpan studio aesthetic that falls in the spectrum between commercial product and highly composed snapshot.
The way in which images continue to evolve and define culture influences Kevin Capon’s approach. His 1984 portrait series documented New Zealanders in the arts using a traditional 8 x 10 large-format camera. The resulting contact prints of pioneers Colin McCahon and Ralph Hotere are equally represented alongside other accomplished creatives and media personalities by tight facial close-ups, a hallmark of Andy Warhol’s era. Decadeslater, portraiture’s obsession with the truth and fame has given way to fictional perspectives and the layperson. Accordingly, Capon’s recent pieces use uncanny subjects to construct complex allegories…   (Read more)

Writers Corner: Ode to my Mum
Writers Corner: Ode to my Mum
Tumblr media
While sorting through a box of old papers I came upon a familiar piece of scrap of paper that I had written well over a decade ago while on holiday with Mum in Tuscany. I had been living in England for years and had arranged to meet up with her there. We have always been close and it was an incredibly special and memorable mother daughter moment. One I’ll always cherish and never forget.
Love…

STARTING AN ART COLLECTION
STARTING AN ART COLLECTION
During my time working with Port Jackson Press Australia (PJPA) and meeting and chatting with many lovely print and art enthusiasts, I began to realise that many were keen on starting their own art collections but did not know where to begin.  I offered to write an article for the PJPA gallery blog to assist their clients in a better understanding of how to start and what to keep in mind when…

Taking light as a primary focus, Light Conversation is an collaborative exhibition with Victoria Wareham and Fiona West.  It aims to create narratives between the studio outputs of these two practitioners to investigate haptic relationships to light, space and the moving image.
Consisting of large perforated static window vinyls, a series of intimate projections onto silk and sand and large scale immersive 16mm film installation, this exhibition uses a combination of handcrafted and digital processes to explore the delicate ability of light to transform space and influence perception.
In this exploratory environment, the selected pieces aim to generate new transformative ways of experiencing light-based works that attempt to challenge our understanding of the point at which image and object meet.
Portable LED projectors have been a hit with contemporary installation artists like Wareham and West who are finding new ways to create digital artworks, introducing the projector as the artwork itself and not just a tool by which to display it.
Exhibitions such as Light Conversation and public platforms like White Night, Luxlumin, Channels Festival and Gertrude St Projection Festival showcase the growing appreciation and interest in digital projection, its applications and most interestingly, our relationship to light.
Where:  POP Gallery, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University
When:   4 – 15th April 2018

If you love antiques, art and collectibles then come and check out the newly opened Capocchi Collingwood at 360-364 Smith Street. Owners Angela Capocchi and Steve McKinnon are a rock’n duo with an infectious passion for 19th and 20th century furniture, lighting and decorative arts.
Angela and Steve are not newcomers to the industry though. They have been sourcing and selling antiques with dealers Phil and Liz Capocchi (Capocchi Armadale) for well over a decade and now have ventured to the other side of the river to open their new show room in the edgy art and design precinct of Collingwood.
They’ve opened up a Pandora’s Box of artworks by artists from the 60’s and 70’s and beautifully restored furniture and decorative items sourced directly from Europe. From Deco to Retro, their cabinets host some truly unique items (I just love the python in a glass jar!).
These guys definitely have an eye for decorative design and are happy to share their creative flare with design services for advertising and film set stylists and event planners as well as a full design consultation service for private clients who would love to see their style reflected in their home.
I absolutely love finding unusual pieces that create great conversation when placed randomly throughout my house…and this place is full of them! It’s like walking into a beautifully curated oasis of treasure from the past.
Grab a coffee, hit the Smith St curbs and find yourself a gem from the new Silk Road of Smith Street. You won’t be disappointed.

NAVIGATE THE ART WORLD: Writing a CV
NAVIGATE THE ART WORLD: Writing a CV
By Jessica Velasquez
On Tuesday night myself (CANVAS & CO) and Christina Lew (blogger, Miss Rosanna) were guest speakers on the topic of  ‘Writing for Artists’ at Hatch Contemporary Art Space.
Despite running overtime and covering several topics such as writing media releases, blogging, bio’s, CV’s and catalogue essays many of those who attended were keenly interested to know more.  Realising…

Refil: Printing a brighter future
Refil: Printing a brighter future
Like many of us who wish for a cleaner future I have been inspired by the emerging stories of innovation and sustainability.  Finding a solution to the ever increasing amount of plastic debris and changing public perception about the way in which use plastics seems a gigantic undertaking.  The world is choking on plastic debris from past and present generations with no sign of slowing down.…
