WIP Whenever
Been uber depressed the last few weeks and have written very little, but a very kind comment asking for an update got to me and I made more headway this week, sooo:
"I'm glad to see you still remember your blood is bronze," Willam said. "Like Jon's. Like mine. " Not just bronze, Rhae thought. But fire too. "Blood is blood, cousin. Memory does not change it." No matter what my father says. Her arms folded back across her chest. "I asked you state your concerns plainly. I will not do suffer your silence on this any longer." Willam shook his head, taking a long breathe. "Wedding Aemond Targaryen is a mistake." Rhae scowled. "You've yet to even meet him," She said, her voice lowering in simmering resentment. "What cause have you to make such a claim?" "Your mother had a similar arrangement, as you might recall. You should know better than any that Targaryen princes are as volatile as the beasts they ride. You more than any should understand the devestation they bring." "Aemond is my blood as much as you are. You don't know him as I do. He would never see me harmed." Willam shook his head again, chewing at his lip and staring off into the distance a moment. Say it, Rhae willed him. So that I might renounce the accusations in full. At last he met her gaze. "Your broken wrist. It was his doing, wasn't it?" "No! It wasn't—" Rhae shoved him in the chest. She wasn't strong enough to knock him down, but the suddenness of her force still broke his stance, forcing him a step back. "We were training!"

She is a swordswoman!! I can only imagine how excited Rhae would be to spar with another lady. I think being the only one is a lonely experience for her, and she would loooove to fight with someone around the same size and stature as her for once.
Rhae does have those lingering feelings left over for Aegon but she's determined to bury them. As with Helaena in her timeline, being friends with Aegon's betrothed would actually make that easier for her, not harder. She'd be really encouraging to Aegon about Therese in private, as in her mind the best way to move on is knowing that both of them are in a good place. She'd also be furious on Therese's behalf if Aegon didn't conduct himself well. Then, any lingering feelings of jealousy between Rhae and Therese can get whacked out in the training yard! I could totally see them going crazy on each other while sparring. Onlookers would think they hate each other and then be thoroughly confused to see them leaving the grounds together arm in arm, laughing their heads off.
Besties!!
If you’re interested- Rhae and an OC of your choice, romantic or platonic!
Oooo ofc I’m interested!
Rhae + Therese
They’re besties, your honor. No one is more girlboss than these two. They oftentimes spend time together in the Red Keep, taking their tea in one another’s chambers or training together in the courtyard (Rhae is a swordswoman right?) or going on walks through the long halls of the castle, arm in arm, as they talk about whatever they wish to. During Therese’s betrothal and marriage to Aegon, they’d especially be in each other’s company, as the intended of the two princes. Therese would probably seek counsel with Rhae when things start to fall through with Aegon, but I also wonder if maybe considering how Aegon views Rhae, she might become jealous of her a bit. Idk. But they would definitely be besties over anything else.

first thought i had was “this is what rhae targaryen says to prince regent aemond when he says that she is nothing without him”
ik we’re not there yet but!!! the vibes???
LMAO that’s a great clip!!!!
I have a lot of ideas for the Prince Regent arc with Aemond- things are definitely going to get very heated between him and Rhae!
But I don’t presently think Aemond’s attitude will be ‘she is nothing without him’. Both because I don’t think it would be effective (Rhae would humble him SO quickly) and because I think, for what she’ll accomplish between now and then, he will be desperate to keep her on his side!
That’s not to say he won’t be taking some low blows, though. The vibes are still there. But Aemond’s insults would need to be tailored to cut Rhae deeply- targeting her insecurities and her fears. “Being nothing without Aemond” isn’t one of them- if he suggested otherwise I think Rhae would laugh in his face.
In fact, I think knowing that this sentiment isn’t true will be a source of insecurity for Aemond, instead. Without him, Rhae is still the Lady of Runestone. Next chapter (after the one I’m working on right now) will see Aemond grappling with his status as a second son, and the prospect of his future children inheriting through his wife rather than him. He likes Rhae a lot, but considering his own ambitions… is that going to be enough?

WIP Wednesday Thursday
Another lil bit since I got tagged again by @rainwingmarvel7 after I'd done my original.
Out on the pitch, Jon and Bill had taken their mark at a hundred-and-twenty paces. But as Bill began to notch his next arrow, Jon took another large step back. The crowd began to holler at the jest, freeing Willam of Rhae's piercing stare as they both turned to watch Bill take another two steps back. An involuntary smile cracked her lips. The theatrics earned more cheers, egging the archers farther and farther back until they had reached a hundred-and-fifty paces. "Now he's done it," Willam muttered. "Go Jon!" Rhae cheered, swept up in her excitement and momentarily forgetting her anger. "Royce! Royce! Royce!" Jon and Bill drew their bows, both angled severely. Twang. Rhae tracked Jon's arrow through the sky, squinting up through the sun. Thump. "ROYCE!" She screamed in delight, Bill Burley's arrow protruding from the dirt mere inches from the target. Willam joined Rhae's clapping, chanting with her, their cries echoed by the distant crowd: "ROYCE! ROYCE! ROYCE!"

WIP Wednesday
Thank you for the tag @selfproclaimedunicorn and @emilykaldwen, I actually have some progress this time!
"On our travels, Jon had seemed just as sure you would join us for the competition," He said, as the archers moved their way back another ten paces. "I couldn't understand how, after what happened with that dragon. But he was certain." Rhae narrowed her eyes, waiting for him to continue, but Willam wouldn't meet her gaze. "I meant to," she said after a moment. "He said you'd grown better," Willam shrugged. "No more bandages. And that you'd begun training again." "I have!" She protested. The archers drew their drawstrings. "Every day, with bow and sword. The bandages aren't for my burns, I broke my wrist." "You broke it?" "During training." "So you were struck." The arrows loosed and the crowd cheered. The force of Rhae's claps caused her wrist to ache. Her jaw locked as Jon Royce and Bill Burley paced another ten steps back.
Rhae not-so-successfully trying to avoid admitting that Aemond broke her wrist because she knows it'll play into people's already poor perception of him. They're never beating the Daemon/Rhea 2.0 allegations!!

will daemon and rhae ever heal their relationship? don’t get me wrong, i seriously dislike daemon targaryen but rhae’s daddy issues are making me so so sad for her. she just needs her daddy and a pretty dragon fr (suggestion: she finally does claim sheepstealer but only when she’s conquered her fear of her father, real freudian bs up in here)
Hello!
I don’t think Daemon and Rhae can heal their relationship for the simple fact that neither of them are that interested in doing so. Daemon robbed Rhae of the opportunity to ever have ANY relationship with her mother, and she never really gets another maternal figure to fill that void. You can tell she craves one, and Alicent somewhat fills that hole, but it a lot closer to a mentor-mentee dynamic than a mother-daughter one. Alicent manipulates Rhae, and Rhae is too busy idolizing her to really see it.
And it’s not JUST that Daemon robbed her of a mother- he took himself out of the equation too. Had he kept Rhae with him, and she had been raised by him and Laena rather than the grieving Royces, she may not have ingrained such a deep hatred for him. She may not even know the truth about Rhea’s death, and by the time she does, she may not even react that severely to it. It happened when she was a baby, so I think Daemon could’ve easily controlled the narrative if he had wanted to.
But he doesn’t! And I think Rhae really wants there to be some secret, deeper explanation for why Daemon didn’t take her with him. But there simply… isn’t one! Daemon just didn’t really care to- He even suggests he’d done Rhae a favor by making her head of her house and keeping her away from court politcs. Which… I think he partially believes, but also ~has~ to believe in order to feel better about his decision. He doesn’t want to hurt her, and hopes that she can lead a happy life without him. He just wants her to do it somewhere else so he doesn’t have to think about it. I think he was being honest when he said he didn’t want to see her continually burned.
But that answer is so deeply unsatisfactory to Rhae that she now feels that she needs to PROVE he was wrong to ignore her- by making his life a living hell in return. She doesn’t have the means yet, but trust that someday she will.
And oddly, I think this will make Daemon like her more. Rhae setting out to prove her father wrong, but instead earning his approval through antagonism, is growing closer in a strange way. But it won’t be healthy! I don’t think they’re capable of that.
Thank you for your question and suggestion! It’s always great to watch people read through the chapters, but getting feedback is a rare and greatly appreciated treat! Thank you!!!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favourite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers (if you feel like it, no pressure) Spread the self-love 💖
Awwh thank you Misa!
I've only got the one fic, but I will gladly take an opportunity to talk about it!
Bronze Fury is my baby!! When I'm really into a fictional world I almost always supply some sort of OC to interact with the plot while I'm watching (functionally a self-insert but with like, a single degree of separation), but I've always been really strict with myself about making sure the OC fits naturally, explores the themes, and doesn't take away from other characters. A lot of self-inflicted rule-following for the scenarios playing out in my head (I can't help it), but with Bronze Fury, Rhae fit too perfectly to stay there!! The arc I imagined for her was too compelling not to write down- which was and is a big deal for me! I feel like spending so much time with her has also allowed her to evolve and really come into her own as a character. She surprises me constantly!
As an aspiring author, I spent a lot of years feeling like it was wrong to indulge myself in fanfiction when I "should" be working on original works. The end result was always not writing much of anything! I wish I'd gotten over it sooner, because now Bronze Fury is by FAR the longest story I've ever written (60k and counting), and I'm having so much fun with it! It's also helped me understand so much more about myself as a writer and provided extensive opportunity to reflect on my book and what elements are missing from it. I want all my original characters to feel like they're arguing with me while I'm writing!!
Would recommend reading it to anyone and everyone. If you're a fan of the greens you will love this story. Rhae is functionally adopted into their mess in a way that I think is really authentic to their pre-existing dynamics, and provides lots and lots of opportunities for filling in the gaps between episodes. In my humble opinion it's really excellent!! And then you should immediately go read Misa's Sins of the Father for more Roycegaryen goodness.

Aegon apologizes to Aemond
Cause - Ch. 8: Bastards and Betrothals
"I wish as you do that the conflict over the crown never comes to pass," Rhae continued. "But if it does, Aemond is on your side as much as I am. Probably even more. He's not earned your taunts... defend him as devoutly as he does you." Aegon considered her words. "Okay. I'll let up. I promise." "Good," Rhae's eyes narrowed. "And I think you should apologize." Aegon groaned slightly, making a show of shuddering at the thought. "Don't make me." "I don't want to make you." Rhae knew she was pushing her luck. She felt certain neither brother had spoken an apology to the other in their whole lives. "I just think that you should do it." Aegon must've sensed Rhae was serious, for he did not jest any further. He merely nodded his head, still rested against hers—but he made no promises.
Effect - Ch. 13: The Sacrifice
Since she'd last seen him, Aemond's face had bandaged and cleaned of blood. He blinked hazily as she approached the bed, but still managed to sit a little straighter as she took a seat beside his mattress. "Oh, Aemond..." She whispered. "Spare me your pity," he muttered, the hand closest to Rhae clenching into a fist. "I've been subjected to plenty already." "That's not why I came," Rhae placed her scarred hand over his. "I thought you could use the company—though it sounds you've had plenty of that, too." Aemond seemed to relax a little—Rhae knew it was not just his face that had been injured, but his pride. He had never been one to seek sympathies. "Mother was here all night," he said. "I don't remember much..." "That's for the best," Rhae said. "But when I did drift awake, I could hear her weeping." Aemond continued, his brow furrowing. "And Aegon, he was the first to see me this morning. Would you believe it? He apologized." Rhae's heart panged dully with a feeling she could not quite place. "For what?" She asked. "Stupid stuff," Aemond said, suddenly looking embarrassed. They sat in heavy silence, until he continued: "I don't regret doing it."

The Wedding - Opening
The morning's cool, early winds sang with twangs and thumps. It was a sweet sound, and a mockery. Rhae tugged irritably at the fresh set of bandages wrapped tightly around her wrist. She leaned against a lonely post on the innermost barrier of the tourney grounds, a fair distance from any other spectators. The smallfolk watched on pressed toes outside roped perimeters, nobles spread above them in the stands. Rhae was glad to be away from both, on account of winning over a guard she'd recognized from the Red Keep's training yard. Before he could turn her away, she'd made a point to wave to her competing cousins—Jon and Willam—and remark sadly how she wished she could join them. He'd looked the other way as she hopped the fence, and none had tried to escort her away since. Even in her frustration over her inability to compete, it pleased her greatly to watch and listen. By the time the archers passed forty paces, she even began to feel a bit better. She reckoned that was the furthest she could manage—her shorter, smaller arms had always been better for accuracy than distance, anyway. But her cousin Jon suffered from no such disadvantage. With long, lithe limbs, his greatest challenge at eighty paces still seemed to be over-shooting, his target pieced all along its top. Her heart soared with each of his arrows, and she couldn't help but clap loudly every time it found its mark.
Royce time!
