smoke signals are usually used to call out for help in survival situations. sam needed out of the hunting life. and jess was going to get him out.

sam grew up hunting, he’s bound to have scars (physical and mental). he never told jess any of this. she’s left to guess. where did that scar come from? why does he sleep with a knife sometimes? why does he obsess over deaths in the news? either way, she’s going to stay by him. he is her future.

sam, dean and john practically lived in the impala. that was his childhood. and sam probably had to twist some of his childhood stories around when he told them.

sam is severely traumatized. a song his dad liked to play during hunts or that dean played while they were left at motels could be a trigger.

this is the way sam grew up, and jess wants to connect with him however she can.

even though he doesn’t say anything to her, she knows he’s not okay. she wants to make him feel loved. safe.

sam and jess never got to have their future together. it’s forever unwritten. as jess dies, she thinks about it. their past. their present. their future. but it’ll be gone soon. she’ll be gone.

jess never found out the full truth about sam’s past. he always remained anonymous in some way to her for their entire relationship. and in the end, jess became a stepping stone for sam’s true path. nothing more.
