it's true,

working in the death industry, almost any time i picked up an elderly person from a nursing home it was the same.

if it was a woman, usually several family members and friends were there to see her off. when i conducted my interview they were able to provide all of her basic info without much fuss. they would talk about her, tell stories, laugh and cry. often they would play a song for her while my partner and i moved her. they would follow us from her room, through the nursing home, out to the van. they'd watch us buckle her up and drive her away. often they would remind me to drive carefully.

i could probably count on one hand the amount of men who got that treatment. if it was a man, more often than not there would be nobody but a single staff member to watch us move him. sometimes a son would be there, but he would stand awkwardly in the hall by himself rather than witness or discuss anything. if the son was there, i always attempted an interview but was usually met with some embarrassed laughs and "i don't knows" to simple questions about his father. nobody ever said it, but it was obvious: "he was never around. i barely knew him," or "we all hate him. i was the only one willing to come." i got most of the info i needed from a printout at the nurse's station. full name. date of birth. religious preference.

i have some wild stories about picking up men from residences too. they're more likely to be found way later than women. i had a guy who was doing meth and fell face down out of his wheelchair, aspirated his vomit and died. found at least 2 weeks later by a tenant who had come to pay rent. had a guy with hepatitis who spent his final days (weeks? months?) just bleeding and masturbating onto everything he owned. called in by neighbors when the bugs became a problem. i had to wear a hazmat suit just to bag him up.

back at the cremation center we had 2 huge coolers full of all the regular HR and then a 3rd separate cooler for uhhhhh unclaimed remains. it was mostly suicides and heavily decomposed HR, as in people who had died and hadnt been found for weeks or months. a lot of it was just torsos and stuff. pretty much all of it was still recognizable as male. most of it was there from the day i started working there until the day i left, waiting for either somebody to claim it or the state to agree to pay for a cremation. it's expensive to store HR so the owner of the center openly complained about his cooler full of dead scumbags. we all knew what they were.

My advice would be to try something new and change it up. You can try mixing styles or switching styles from one day to the other. I think it's great that you recognize how femininity is socialized onto women and it's always good to reflect on how you can take steps to resist patriarchal conditioning.

Also, definitely try to get to a women's festival next year. You'll get to see the best of radfem style.

here's some more unsolicited adult advice as someone in her 30s who knows there are a lot of twenty somethings and teens that follow her: if you're trying to build a new habit you really want, and are struggling, you have to break it down to the smallest building block possible. If you're failing, you haven't thought small enough. I know it's possible to hear stories of people who just snapped into new life mode one day by "just deciding", but truly what's happening there is a confluence of events and experiences that force the brain into some sort of epiphany. You cannot will an epiphany. It'll never work. For most times of your life, you will need to build habits intentionally, and that means not working against yourself and to set micro goals. like laughably tiny goals. because once that easy tiny goal is met, you can build off it, tiny goal after tiny goal until you reach your big goal.

so for example, if you want to be a morning person that gets up at ass crack dawn so that you can work out, eat brekkie, shower, and get to work at a leisurely pace, and you're not that person because you will hit your snooze button 800 times, you have to get the big picture goal out of your head. think smaller. "I want to get up 15 minutes earlier than I normally do." If you can't do that, make it 5 minutes. "I want to cook breakfast every day" hell no too big. "I want to eat something, anything, before I leave the house" hell yeah, fantastic. When you go to the grocery store to make sure there are things in the house for breakfast, if you keep buying bagels and microwave sandwiches that you ignore, you gotta think smaller. SMALLER. What's something so easy to eat that you'll never say no to. Is it a yogurt? Is it a handful of grapes? Is it a hostess ho ho? is it hot cheetos? FORGET the big picture of the fantasy put-together woman preparing a full nutritious meal that you'd be proud to admit to. Think only of the smallest goal you can achieve. If you know you can't say no to an ice cream sandwich, put ice cream sandwiches in your freezer and have one for breakfast every day until it's so instilled in you that you gotta get up to eat something you can start diversifying.

It sounds like, from the lack of habit place, that must take forever. But really it doesn't take too long to form the habit once the discipline kicks in. the trick is that you have to give your brain something easy to become disciplined to. If it's too hard, think easier and smaller. No one has to know. Literally no one in the gd world has to know that for 4 weeks when you were 22 you had an ice cream sandwich for breakfast every day. who cares. If it gets you eating oatmeal with fresh fruit in a few months who cares. you did it, yay. smaller, easier. if you can't do it, think smaller and easier. smaller!! EASIER!!! You are not thinking smaller and easier enough. break your brain thinking how small and easy you can go. SMALLER. EVEN SMALLER, SIS.

i invented a horrible drink that will cure any disease. you should only drink this if you are too sick to taste flavors. i could sell this recipe to big pharma for mega millions but im sharing it for free because of my morals.

get ur biggest and most worst mug. you need garlic. i used like 2 cloves of elephant garlic which is probably 6-8 cloves regular garlic. chop up that garlic. or just smash it with ur hand like me. put the garlic. in the mug. then pour hot water over that garlic and let it steep. garlic tea. like half a mug. but don't remove the garlic. add some apple cider vinegar. idk spoons or whatever but like a drink of acv. maybe 3 spoons. then add your lemon or lime juice. im mexican so i used lime but im also a no sabo kid so i used Simply Limeade. you can add honey if you want but most important, fill your mug the rest of the way with whiskey. i used jim beam honey so that's 2 in 1. that is what you call thrifty. then roll up in bed like a burrito and hold on tight!
