Scientists have long worried Earth’s rising temperatures could make fungi more dangerous to humans.
Now, researchers in China may have stumbled on evidence to support that idea; To prove that the fungus can really infect mammals, the researchers injected it into mice with weakened immune systems. The mice did indeed get sick, but something unexpected happened as well: Some of the fungi quickly mutated into a more aggressive form. When the researchers checked why this might be happening, they found that cells cultured at 37°C accumulated mutations 21 times faster than cells cultured at 25°C. And when the researchers cultured R. fluvialis at 37°C and exposed it to another common antifungal, amphotericin B, it developed resistance to the drug much faster, they found. “A new yeast pathogen which is antifungal resistant and is able to become increasingly resistant with higher temperatures, is remarkable,” Denning says. Higher temperatures may trigger mutations that cause more aggressive growth or drug resistance.

Nairobi Observance of the International Day for Biodiversity 2024.
The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated. In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as IDB, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This was partly done because it was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December, given the number of holidays that coincide around that time of year.
