Announcing QUIPOCALYPSE 3: the Quiplash 3 Tournament of the End Times
Tumblr media
Update: The Results and archived broadcast!
Here’s the final results!  And below is the YouTube export of the stream (Twitch version here).  Thanks for playing everyone!!

On Saturday night, October 17, 2020, if the world hasn’t ended yet, we’ll be hosting a live Quiplash 3 tournament at https://www.twitch.tv/berniehou starting at 9:30pm ET, and you’re invited to either compete with some of the most fun Quiplash players around, or just watch and vote for your favorite jokes!
The Format
This will be a single-elimination, 3-round tournament of at most 32 total players, where all the games will be 8-player games, with the top 4 finishers of each game advancing to the next round, until there are 8 players left, who will compete in the Championship game (i.e. the third round).  There’ll be 4 games in the 1st round, 2 games in the 2nd round, and then the 8-player Championship game.  The winner of the Championship Game is our overall winner.
Win a Free Copy of Jackbox Party Pack 7!
I’ll have an extra copy of JPP 7 to give away as a prize... but not to the overall champion of the tournament, because I want to keep everything fun and friendly and the stakes low.  But at the end of the night, we’ll be voting on the Answer of the Tourney - the best and/or funniest single answer of the night, and whoever wrote it will be the winner of the prize.  The only requirement to win is that you have to be present for the official vote and announcement at the end of the tournament.
What is Quiplash 3?
Quiplash 3 is one of the 5 new games included in the brand new Jackbox Party Pack 7, coming out on Thursday, 10/15!  It’s a party game where you write funny answers to funny prompts, and then the answers are put up 2 at a time, and everyone votes on which one they like better.  Whoever gets the most overall votes wins.  That’s really it!  Here’s the official trailer I found of Quiplash 1 (the gist is the same):

How to Enter to Play in the Tournament
Space is limited, so there’s no guarantee we can fit you in, but if you love playing Quiplash, sign up and maybe you’ll get in or at the least be a standby!
Tell me that you’d like to commit to play in the tournament.
If I don’t know you, provide proof that you’ve played Quiplash before, e.g. a link to a past stream or saved video you were on.  If you can’t do this but think you can convince me anyway, give it a shot.  Sorry but we don’t want to be explaining how the game works to players during the event.
Give me the best way to contact you, whether it’s by whisper on Twitch, Discord DM, Twitter, email, whatever.
How to Just Watch Instead
The Quipocalypse will be just as much fun to watch as it’ll be to play in!  That’s because every audience member gets to vote on every head-to-head matchup of player jokes, which directly determines who wins.  They also get to write jokes of their own to special audience answers, which don’t count in the game, but show up on the screen for the everyone else in the audience.
You can just watch and not be part of the audience, in which case you can use any device and go to https://www.twitch.tv/berniehou when the broadcast is live (or use the Twitch app and find me at berniehou).  Click to follow me there on Twitch to get notified when we’re live.
To watch and be in the audience at the same time, you’ll either need to be on a computer with 2 web browser windows open, or have 2 devices.  One will be tuned in to the stream as in Step 1, the other will be on the jackbox.tv website.  All you’ll do there is type in a short room code which you’ll be given when each game is about to start, and then you’ll be able to easily vote on player answers and/or type in answers to the audience prompts.
Who Am I?
My name’s Bernie, I’m just this guy, you know?  I created the popular webcomic Alien Loves Predator back in the day.  Our channel is now part of the official Jackbox Games Twitch Team!  I’ve been playing their games on our Twitch channel every week (Thursdays, these days) with my best pals for over 3 years now, and, along with some awesome friends we’ve met on Twitch, we’ve gotten pretty good at these games.
I recently ran this awesome Quiplash 2 tournament, this awesome Drawful 2 tournament, and this awesome Mad Verse City tournament!
Some Extra Details and Rules
The tournament and player answers are rated R.  Adult language and themes are permitted, but we draw a very hard line at racist, misogynistic, homophobic, etc. references.  Offenders will be quickly censored and banned.  We’ll make sure the “VIP” of each game is also a trusted moderator of our channel, who will be able to deal with any possible trolls.
An intended schedule of which competitors are assigned to which games will be posted at the beginning of the broadcast.  Keep in mind that the schedule will have to be flexible, because if one or more players fail to join a game they are assigned to, other players will be pulled from a subsequent game to fill their spot(s).
If a player fails to join a game they were assigned to, they aren’t necessarily disqualified, if they can join a later game in the same round.  If all games in that round are complete, though, then they will be disqualified.
We can’t be responsible for any technical difficulties any player experiences on their end, but if a game gets interrupted due to a Jackbox server problem, or a disconnect on my end, we’ll do everything possible to resume in the fairest way possible to all players, including efforts to preserve the scoring of the last completed round.
In the event that we don’t have 8 official competitors to fill out a given game, we’ll use Fillers - people who will play but will not count in the standings - to fill it to 8.  If we have, say, 12 competitors left in a given round, we’d divide them into 2 groups of 6, and add 2 Fillers to each to bring both games up to 8 players.
It’s gonna be so fun you guys!
But only if you’re there.  So sign up to play today, and see you there!

On Saturday night, June 20, 2020, if the world hasn’t ended yet, we’ll be hosting a live Mad Verse City tournament at https://www.twitch.tv/berniehou starting at 9:30pm ET, and you’re invited to either compete with some of the most fun Mad Verse City players around, or play along from the audience!
The Format
This will be a single-elimination, 2-round tournament of at most 32 total players, where all the games will be 8-player games.  All players will play in one of the 3 or 4 (depending on turnout) first round games, with the top 2 or 3 (depending on turnout) scores of each 1st round game advancing to the Championship game.  The winner of the Championship Game is our overall winner.
What is Mad Verse City?
Oh man it’s so great.  It’s a party game where you fight in 1-on-1 rap battles, by writing 4-line verses with the help of Mad Libs style prompts.  Then the other players and everyone in the audience vote on the winner.  It’s like Quiplash but with more death by rhyme.  Here’s the official trailer:

Update: The Results and archived broadcast!
Here’s the final results!  And below is the YouTube export of the stream (Twitch version here).  Thanks for playing everyone!!

On Saturday night, April 25, 2020, if the world hasn’t ended yet, we’ll be hosting a live Drawful 2 tournament at https://www.twitch.tv/berniehou starting at 9pm ET, and you’re invited to either compete with some of the most fun Drawful players around, or play along from the audience!
The Format
This will be a single-elimination, 3-round tournament of at most 32 total players, where all the games will be 8-player games, with 4 players (the top 2 by score, plus the top 2 by likes!) of each game advancing to the next round, until there are 8 players left, who will compete in the Championship game (i.e. the third round).  There’ll be 4 games in the 1st round, 2 games in the 2nd round, and then the 8-player Championship game.  The 2 ultimate co-winners of the tournament will be the final points leader, alongside with the likes leader, of the Championship Game.
What is Drawful 2?
Oh man it’s so great.  It’s a Pictionary-like party game where you try to draw a picture of a phrase that you’re given, and then everyone else types in their guesses as to what it is, and tries to pick out the correct answer among all the guesses.  As a drawer you get points for anyone who picks out the right answer.  As a guesser, you get points for picking the right answer, fooling other players into picking your guess, and other people (including audience members!) giving your answer “likes” because it’s funny or for any other reason.  In this tournament we’re rewarding both the highest points scorers AND the highest likes getters!
How to Enter to Play in the Tournament
Space is limited, so there’s no guarantee we can fit you in, but if you love playing Drawful, sign up and maybe you’ll get in or at the least be a standby!
Tell me (by whisper on Twitch) that you’d like to commit to play in the tournament.

Drawfulgeddon will be just as much fun to watch as it’ll be to play in!  That’s because every audience member gets to make their guesses on each drawing, and give out likes to their favorite answers, which directly determines who wins.

Quipocalypse contestant guide
Hiya, thanks for being a part of the Quipocalypse!
You know how to play Quiplash 2 already so I’m glad I don’t have to walk you through that.  Just a couple of simple guidelines/reminders to go over:
- Please confirm whether you’ll be able to play in the tournament this Saturday night starting at 9pm ET, until at least as long as you are still competing.  If you’re bringing any guests, please tell me their Twitch usernames (or their real names, if they don’t have one yet).  If you’re not sure whether you/they can commit, that’s ok, just tell me what the situation is.
- We’ll have close to, if not our full limit of 32 players, which means there’ll be 3 rounds - 4 games in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the Finals = 7 total games.  A standard 8p game takes about 20 minutes, so estimate about a half-hour each including getting set up.  So that’s 3.5 hours of mostly game time.
- This Saturday afternoon, the day of the tournament, an intended schedule of which competitors are assigned to which games will be posted.  Keep in mind that the schedule will have to be flexible, because if one or more players fail to join a game they are assigned to, other players will be pulled from a subsequent game to fill their spot(s).  This is why I’m asking you to be on when we start at 9pm ET, and stay as long as you’re still competing.
- When it’s your turn to play in a game, I’ll be whispering you the room code on Twitch, so you’ll need to be able to access your whispers.  If you’re taking too long to get in the game without an explanation, we’ll see if someone else can take your spot.  If that happens, you aren’t necessarily disqualified, if you can join a later game in the same round.  If all games in that round are complete, though, then you’ll be disqualified.
- We can’t be responsible for any technical difficulties you experience on your end, but if a game gets interrupted due to a Jackbox server problem, or a disconnect on my end, we’ll do everything possible to resume in the fairest way possible to all players, including efforts to preserve the scoring of the last completed round.
- The tournament, its prompts, and player answers are rated R.  Adult language and themes (curse words, sex/gross-out/political jokes, etc.) are permitted, but we draw a very hard line at racist, misogynistic, homophobic, etc. references.  We allow a lot on our channel, but if you somehow manage to cross the line, you’ll be quickly censored and banned.
- Normally I hate when people are talking while I’m writing answers, but as I’ll just be hosting, I’ll probably be talking while you’re writing answers.  If that’s gonna distract you, then you might want to mute the stream while you’re thinking.  Consider yourself warned!
Let me know if you have any questions.  Otherwise I’ll see you Saturday!
-Bernie

In which we overthink an Overthinking It about “Love Shack”
dean interesting theory about "Love Shack." https://www.overthinkingit.com/2016/02/15/what-is-the-love-shack/
Overthinking It On the Nature of the Love Shack - Overthinking It What were the B-52s actually singing about? What makes a shack a love shack? Who puts glitter on a mattress, anyway
bernie no one PUTS glitter on the mattress, glitter just gets everywhere, on your clothes, on the floor, on the mattress, on the front porch
dean I accept your explanation
noah good overthinkin'
he missed the “YOU’RE WHAT?!” which seems very important, no?
dean excellent point. but maybe it's, like, "you're here??" he wasn't expecting her to show up until the party had thinned out a bit
noah If she’s going to the Love Shack to tell him she’s pregnant, that supports the divergent perspectives theory — she’s remembering it fondly (and fantastically, e.g., glitter?) because that’s where she hooked up with this guy, she’s going there because he hangs out there — and he’s there because he’s dude-ing it up with a party and partying
dean /gif mind blown
Tumblr media
and, people have said that "tin roof, rusted" means pregnant, although I forget why
noah when I looked that up, a lot of folks cited Love Shack as the source of the slang ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
dean the article doesn't address the huge question of the song, that I've mentioned before... that they never tell us what to do if we see a faded sign on the side of the road, etc., etc.
it's the first line. I'M WAITING THE ENTIRE SONG FOR THEM TO COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE, AND IT NEVER HAPPENS.
(but perhaps the argument can be made that this creates a sense of tension that makes the song more compelling...?)
I had never before considered the notion that the second sign says “Stay Away Fools Cause Love Rules At the Love Shack”.
my initial reaction is skepticism, since I think if you want people to stay away, you would just say "stay away fools." and definitely wouldn't say, essentially, stay away from here because it is fun, or compassionate, or whatever.
but, I can't rule it out. maybe they want the sign to attract people to come, and it's reverse psychology. that interpretation is certainly supported by the fact that there's another sign telling people how close they are. but then again, we don't know who put up these signs.
I guess even my assumption that they're two separate signs is a leap. it could be one sign that says "15 Miles to the Love Shack, Stay Away Fools [and perhaps Cause Love Rules etc.]"
there's a clear implication that, like, if you see this sign, that means you're in the right place and keep going.
however, I would like that to be made more explicit, and grammatical
bernie sure u can technically interpret that the (second) sign says “stay away, fools, cause love rules at the Love Shack”, but then u can interpret it to say literally the rest of the song lyrics if u want.  it’s pointless.  to me the sign clearly says “Stay Away Fools”, and it’s totally natural, it’s a playful way of saying we are awesome and fun and not for the hypothetical fool.
dean "u can interpret it to say literally the rest of the song lyrics if u want" - you could, of course, but that would destroy the notion that different singers = different personae and would undermine the entire proposed structure. I can't go that far
bernie well to me interpreting the sign to include the next line of the song is going pretty much just as far, it’s dumb.
dean I think scholars are divided on that point, you certainly present a legitimate point of view.
bernie the next line does make sense as an explanation to why fools should stay away, but no sign would say that.  the sign says Stay Away Fools.
the card says Foops.
dean now, if you had to guess, are there one or two signs
bernie it’s like a sign that says “BEWARE OF DOG BECAUSE YOU COULD GET BITTEN, IT DOES THAT SOMETIMES"
no, the sign says Beware of Dog.
we can’t know if there’s more than 1 sign of course, but i def read it as two.  the first is 15 miles away, the second is closer to it and thus more descriptive.
in fact that second sign is at the door of the Shack.
dean and you posit that it's not calling everyone who drives by a fool who should stay away, but rather is saying that fools should stay away and, by implication, non-fools should proceed.
bernie absolutely.  why would u tell everyone to stay away.
dean because it's like the Masons or something, it's a public thing but everyone knows what goes on there is secret. or maybe the people who run the Love Shack didn't put up the sign.
I do like the sense of movement in your scenario
bernie that’s a stretch.  all of this is a stretch, & u can call me a buzzkill as usual but man, it’s just a place where they party and sure maybe do some casual bangin'
i appreciate the search for the meaning of tin roof, rusted, and maybe some other utterances, but the rest of the lyrics are incredibly straightforward as to what kind of place this is
dean the other obvious problem is that knowing you're 15 miles away from something doesn't much help you get there.
if we knew whether there was an arrow or something on the sign, then we'd know whether or not they really do want you to stay away. but unfortunately we don't know that
bernie well, i know that there are 2 signs, u can choose to continue to be ignorant if u want
ur driving north along I-95, u see a sign that says “15 miles to Newport Aquarium”.  as u get closer, u see a sign that says, “Newport Aquarium: ADVENTURERS ONLY!"
dean lol. I would totally have my theme park sign say "stay away fools"
so you think "straight ahead" is implied. ok
bernie another tidbit about this song: whenever i hear Jimi’s “Fire” i can’t help but think of Love Shack because they have the same bass line
comment: “Atlanta Highway” is the municipal name for the stretch of US 78 that runs from Bogart eastward to downtown Athens, where it becomes Broad St, and then Oak St, before becoming 78 again in Oglethorpe county. So depending on how dead your author is, the Love Shack is located somewhere on the west side of Athens-Clarke County, not the Atlanta metro area.
noah Re: IF/THAT, if we’re following the divergent perspective, then one character is simply interrupting the other — sure, we never find out for real, but I’d imagine “15 miles to the” is a landmark that doesn’t say love shack on it
dean interesting.
noah Ok guys, take this road, when you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says 15 miles to the town of Foobar, take the first dirt road on the right
dean I would point out that the fact that the sign is faded, though, means that it's more likely to be for the Love Shack, and less likely to be for the University of Georgia or something
noah Sweet, thanks bro
dean but that is certainly not definitive.
noah That it’s faded means to me it’s some crappy, dusty, abandoned sign that no one notices except for kids who use it to mark their dirty dirty sex barn
bernie i do note the incongruity with the fact that a “faded sign at the side of the road” evokes a different setting than “headed down the Atlanta Highway"
noah The sex barn / is a filthy old place we / use to get some boninnnnnnnnnn
bernie unless, that’s the mystique in it - you’re driving along the highway, with polished signage everywhere, and then there’s just this one faded sign that doesn’t belong
noah (and yes, to consider that the sign might say “Stay Away Fools ‘Cause Love Rules At The Lo-o-ove Shack” is the true definition of “overthinking it.”)
dean so you take it as a given that if you don't understand that love rules, you are a fool.
and when I say "you", I mean Fred Schneider

bernie 3 signs.
1. Shaque d’Amour 2. Stay Away Fools 3. Love Rules
dean so it doesn't just say, "stay away fools."
if we accept the video as definitive. which I don't know if we can, since it shows them all together in the car which undoes the logic of the competing narrative
bernie

noah this video is terrible

dean a goat. what does it MEAN.
bernie the sign says “Stay Away Fools” a lot more than it does “Stay Away Fools ‘Cause Love Rules at the Lo-o-ove Shack"
because there is a sign that literally says Stay Away Fools.
tho i agree we can’t accept the video as definitive.
dean no, I understand, but I bet you were surprised it even said "love rules."
noah there’s nothing in the rulebook that says they aren’t all in the same car!
bernie yes.  i got ur point.
noah it’s a baby goat. a KID
