ABOUT
Below the cut is some important information (for ease of navigation on mobile)
Important Information
Yelena is sex-repulsed asexual, grey-aromantic. She is very capable of, and frequently does, weaponize sexuality. She also has quite a bit of deep-seated trauma relating to sexuality. However, her boundaries of what constitutes a sexual or romantic action are flexible, and depending on the relationship, she is very physically affectionate while considering things like hand holding, cuddling, or kissing to be platonic. Very open to QPRs and Platonic Partnerships with possible hints of Romance as ships.
Yelena is not pronounced as the MCU pronounces it. In IPA, Yelena is pronounced jɪˈlʲenə. Google translate has a closer but still not perfect pronunciation.
Comic Canon Divergence
I default to comic based Yelena, though MCU Yelena is also an option. Yelena is slightly canon divergent from the comics, in that aging doesn’t happen in an anticipated way within the comics. Yelena was therefore still born in the 1970s, which has been wiggled about in recent comic runs. This is due to the fact that Yelena’s patriotism is strongly rooted in the Cold War Era, and removing her from that time period within which she grew up damages the character. Biologically, however, she is in her early 20s due to being a clone of the original Yelena Belova.
This Yelena is also canon divergent in that I’m skipping over the Secret Avengers character arc because frankly the super adaptoid version of Yelena gave me nightmares. Too many things vaguely resembling eyes were involved.
IF WRITING WITH A NATASHA: I will not consider Black Widow (2001): Breakdown to be canon unless we discuss it OOC. This is because it feels unfair to Natasha’s character to include a poor writing choice that made Yelena more sympathetic at a very high cost to Natasha’s character. However, I am open to RPing something related to it, because it’s a fascinating mental exercise, and I do consider it canon if I am not writing with a Natasha.
Finally, this Yelena was trained from childhood as a Black Widow. This is canon divergent, but it makes the most sense for how extensively she was indoctrinated. Also, essentially every representation of the Red Room’s trainees that we see in the comics with the exception of Yelena start extraordinarily young, and it doesn’t make sense to me that she would be an exception.
Lots of this will change if I am writing with a Natasha, and we can plot something different. If I am not writing with a Natasha, I will assume my Natasha is the canon I’m working with (link).

MCU VERSES
Spoilers for the Black Widow film below the cut
NO ANGEL BORN IN HELL (MCU)
Yelena was born in 1989. As a young child, for her very earliest memories, she was part of a deep cover mission, believing herself to be the child of Melina Vostokova and Alexei Shostakov, and believing Natasha to truly be her big sister. When the mission ended, she was returned to the Red Room, brainwashed, and trained as a Black Widow, a role which she fulfilled until 2016. After 2016, she has broken out of the mind control; the events of Black Widow occur. Between 2016 and 2018, she works on taking down the remains of the Red Room, and making up for her actions under mind control.
Though she was in need of a good hoovering after Thanos’ snap, she continues her work after returning. (I do not believe that she would continue working as an assassin after finally getting free, even if it seems to be the set up for Hawkeye)
I DISRUPT YOUR BELIEFS (MCU ALT)
Following a similar plot to my main MCU verse, the primary difference being that Yelena was broken out of the mind control in 2014, and immediately sought out the Avengers while they were still a “family”. With more help, bringing down the Red Room goes more smoothly, and she gets to be annoying younger sibling to Natasha.

WILD DOGS ARE AFRAID BOTH OF ME AND OF FIRE (CRIMSON WIDOW)
Loosely based on Earth-12041, Combined with the MCU– non-compliant with the Black Widow Film.
Yelena was Baron von Strucker’s pet assassin, groomed from a young child into his own personal version of the Black Widow. Using the codename of the Crimson Widow, Yelena remained loyal until she was sent after the original Black Widow. Slowly, she came to break through the conditioning and trauma, but it wasn’t until Strucker’s death that she successfully found her footing as her own person.
Unlike the Avengers Assembled Yelena, this verse does not feature Yelena trying to take over Hydra. Instead, she is very much a tool, who has very few ambitions except potentially retribution. She is still, however, a trained killer, and not a particularly nice person.

INSTEAD OF WISHING ON A STAR I WISHED ON A GRENADE (AGENT OF SHIELD)
This verse starts mostly the same as my main verse; Yelena was born in the mid 1970s. She was raised by the Red Room, given false memories of a childhood with a family in Kiev, Ukraine. Much like the earlier Black Widow program, Yelena was given a version of the supersoldier serum, which slowed her aging, enhanced her strength, and accelerated her healing. However, the serum was not the same that Natasha received; instead of permanently altering her biochemestry, Yelena instead needed the serum to be injected regularly in order to maintain the effects. This made it harder for her to break away from the Red Room. It wasn’t until she discovered in 2010 that the traumatic murder of her handler had been staged that she broke away from the Red Room, and sought asylum in the USA.
Following Natasha’s example yet again, she joined SHIELD, taking up the handle of the White Widow.

WHO IS THERE OUTSIDE BESIDES THE COLD? (MAIN)
Yelena was born in the mid 1970s. She was raised by the Red Room, and given false memories of a family in Kiev, Ukraine, that never existed. She was not, however, enhanced with the same supersoldier serum as Natasha, and thus never did as well as Natasha did on physical exams, much to Yelena’s distress. When Natasha left the Red Room in the 1980s, Yelena began training specifically to replace the Black Widow. She received scores that were as good if not better than Natasha’s on all assessments the Red Room completed. Most importantly, the Red Room instilled a deep patriotism in Yelena, and sent her to fight Natasha. In most engagements, Natasha proved to be better largely due to Yelena’s lack of practical knowledge, and a level of naivety that reduced her tactical capabilities.
In 2006, Yelena finally started to doubt the Red Room. This is largely because her illusions were shattered and the abuse she had suffered finally became clear as mistreatment. Disillusioned, she left for Cuba, where she worked temporarily as a model, and built a network to keep women safe from trafficking and exploitation. However, a life of leisure grew old, and the serum she’d been given began to wear off. Taking her chances, she moved to the USA in 2010. She began a life as a vigilante, though she often found herself at odds with ‘heroes’. Not used to her mortality, Yelena’s risk taking wound up with her death (unlike her Super Adaptoid death in Secret Avengers).
The Red Room, however, had been cloning both Black Widows. One of Yelena’s clones received her memories, and she returned to vigilantism in 2014, along with a mission to make certain that she shuts down the Red Room. Operating with more caution and an adjusted ethos, she also rebranded herself as the White Widow.
In terms of meshing with MCU events, anytime before CATWS, Yelena is in her late 30s. Any time after CATWS, Yelena appears substantially younger, as she is actually a clone of herself.
