#Finally #Thank you #So done with Anti Sung Joon posts #ParkSeoJoon #SheWasPretty
I’m really tired of people talking about how much better Shin Hyuk is for Hye Jin, by simply talking about what he does, as opposed to how Hye Jin feels. So I just wanted to compare the two leads and Hye Jin’s responses to them.
1. Finding “ugly” Hye Jin pretty
Shin Hyuk: When Shin Hyuk tells Hye Jin she’s still pretty, even now, she doesn’t take him seriously. She thinks he’s just being nice and brushes his comment off with humour. Sung Joon: When she finds Sung Joon’s sketch book she can’t help but smile as the drawings make her tear up. Not only do the drawings confirm that Sung Joon doesn’t like her simply because she’s his friend Hye Jin, but they also make her feel really happy, because after years of being told she’s ugly, someone actually found her pretty, to the extent of drawing her.
2. Confessions
Shin Hyuk: Hye Jin isn’t even slightly wavered by Shin Hyuk’s feelings, instead she just feels really sorry, because he’s her friend and she doesn’t want to hurt him. As opposed to being touched by his words or actions, she feels bad for him. Sung Joon: Hye Jin is at a complete loss for words when he tells her how he feels and has to force herself to snap out of whatever daze it put her in. She wants to tell him the truth, but knows she can’t, and it hurts like hell; because she wants to be with him, but doesn’t want to hurt Ha Ri.
3. Dealing with rejection
Shin Hyuk: Shin Hyuk’s response to Hye Jin’s reaction really annoys me, because as much as I love him, I really can’t stand guys who refuse to take no for an answer. His whole, “it aint over till its over” isn’t funny or cute, it just makes Hye Jin uncomfortable, and feel worse about hurting his feelings. Sung Joon: When Hye Jin tells him why she can’t be with him, he accepts it, and tells her he won’t pressure her. There is a mutual understanding as they both like each other, so he decides to wait for her.
4. Teasing Hye Jin
Shin Hyuk: Yes he makes her laugh and they have a good time together, but when it came down to comparing the two leads, I noticed how whenever Shin Hyuk is teasing Hye Jin, it isn’t mutual. She’s trying to have a serious conversation, or (in early episodes) is genuinely annoyed by his behaviour. Sung Joon: In contrast to this, when Sung Joon is teasing her, its light hearted and its mutual. They’re both messing around without her feeling awkward, embarrassed or annoyed. And Hwang Jung Eum’s comedic ‘overreactions’ come into play a lot more when her and Sung Joon are together.

I have two types of favorite male leads in Korean Dramas and they have both been played by Park Seo Joon
Emotionally unavailable CEO/boss who is actually very kind and considerate but uses their cold demeanor as a defense mechanism.
Big dumb idiot who knows nothing other than sports and respecting women but also has great depth when given the opportunity to show it.

Hi!! I hope you’re well. Just wanted to ask you this after seeing your post on Omkara... how does he compare to Arnav? And why is he your favourite, in relation to Arnav and also in general?
Hey anon!
I’ve done a post on why I love Omkara so much already here.
How he compares to Arnav… Well, they’re very very similar, but it’s just that I personally feel Om is a more complex character and thus he’s dearer to me.
Arnav lost his parents right after the revelation of his father’s infidelity, and though that’s a deep wound, it’s relatively ‘cleaner’ than the one Om has. Om’s father is alive, which is worse in this case; he witnesses the infidelity and the effect that has on his mother every single day for years. He is there when his sister commits an innocent but fatal mistake and sees the effect it has on her psyche, and takes the blame on to himself, which then ravages him mentally, leading him to drugs. He witnesses his mother try to commit suicide in front of him, survive that attempt, and then his father try to murder her. His father tries to murder him. A maternal figure he holds in high regard tries to murder him. He’s been repeatedly deceived by women to the point that he trusts none of them (other than Anika. She’s the one unwavering constant in whom his belief never breaks, even when she doesn’t fully deserve it. Because he trusts her good intentions to that degree.) His mental issues have layer upon layer upon layer and watching him navigate life around them has been fascinating/heartbreaking (coz gosh, when will this poor boy just catch a break?????)
Arnav is stronger. He has his moments of frailty but always rallies relatively quick and is back in action. But it’s Omkara’s weaknesses that make him more interesting to me. He succumbs to drugs (repeatedly), he attempts suicide (both times he says he didn’t mean to but subconsciously… I think he did.) He’s not a “hero” the way Arnav or Shivaay are (until DBO forcibly tries to make him one, against his will, and fails miserably.) He’s broken and tired and at the point of giving up many times. He needs to be rescued, and is, not just by romantic love (Riddhima/Gauri), but also by the steadfast and unwavering love of his brothers (particularly Shivaay.) His mistakes come from self-destructive patterns derived from trauma than ego or wanting to put on a front and seeming formidable and fierce to the external world. His struggles and angst are purely internal and due to having to live with himself and his broken brain and the circumstances that make him so (even as the world/his family thinks he’s amazing and wonderful and has no reason to suffer from self-loathing.) As anyone who suffers from a similar-ish degree of mental illness can attest to, Big Mood.
His marriage to Gauri comes because despite how utterly fucked up he is mentally at that point of time, at the core he is a compassionate man, who cannot stand aside and watch a woman being harmed. (Even one that he loathes.) He has absolutely nothing to gain from the wedding, unlike Arnav/Shivaay, who have ulterior motives. In fact, it only complicates his life further. The gesture is completely selfless on his part and for the express purpose of saving Gauri’s life and nothing more.
Arnav is a self-made man, but because he’s driven to regain everything that he lost after his parents’ death and their subsequent disrepute as a family. Omkara is a self-made millionaire purely because of his ethics. He never lost his riches; if he chose, he wouldn’t have to work a day in his life (like Rudra). But he doesn’t want any part of the empire than he knows has been watered by the blood of countless innocents, and so he makes his own fortune derived only from his own creativity/labour, than hiring others to make his wealth FOR him; because that’s the only way he can ensure that his money isn’t tainted by suffering.
I have a thing for creative men who are good with words. Being good with words and being able to articulate beautifully denotes a deeper understanding of the human condition. It’s no coincidence that all his ability to create art and poetry goes away when he’s at his worst, uncompassionate behavior. He loses his understanding of how complicated people are and what drives them to act in certain manners and becomes emotionally numb; thus the art also goes away. It only comes back once he slowly starts healing and feeling again.
His relationship with his siblings. Arnav’s relationship with Anjali and Akash is quite… I wouldn’t say “one-sided”, but even though he’s in the middle just like Om, he serves as the eldest; their protector, the one in charge. Om’s relationship with his siblings is quite different. He’s mostly protected by Shivaay from a lot of things, but in turn he too is protector to Rudra/Prinku, and in some cases, Shivaay too.
Shivaay and Omkara’s relationship is the true love story for me in this show. They love each other intensely, but not in a creepy, codependent way (like Arnav/Anjali.) They’re yin and yang; diametrically different but complementing and completing each other; integral parts of each other, without whom the other one goes tragically astray. They have entirely different world-views and clash often, but are accepting of each other’s POV and don’t attempt to change/convert them. They call each other out when one of them is on their bullshit but with love and compassion and wanting the best for them, than just wanting to “win” a moral argument. (Hence their unwavering and sometimes hidden support for each others’ wives, even over the other one’s disapproval/unwillingness.) They raise their younger siblings together, and are a solid unit, both against the outer world, and their inner world - their own parents who repeatedly try to tear them apart. Just…. Their relationship, man. It’s my absolute fav and has me all up in my feels on the reg. I’ve never seen a platonic/fraternal relationship this intense and demonstrative (the hugs and kisses! so free and pure!) ever, and ugh, it has my whole damn heart.
There’s lots more reasons, I’m sure, but my brain isn’t properly cooperating rn.

I have never watched Ishqbaaz. Can you tell me why Omkaara is so popular? What is special about him? Should I watch Dil bole oberoi?
Hello anon!
I can’t speak for others, but here’s why *I* love Omkara so much: He’s unlike all other male leads I’ve ever seen in a desi TV show. Especially in a 4 Lions show.
Is a sensitive man; the “soul” of the family/show. Doesn’t subscribe to toxic masculinity bullshit like “having feelings is not manly.”
That, however, does not mean that he won’t beat the snot out of a bitch for fucking with his fam.
Stands for truth and fairness. (Takes it a little too far sometimes, and can be his downfall, but let’s not go there…)
Is a feminist. The only male voice of reason in the show’s token “feminism” track. A good male ally.
Emotionally mature. More so, than the “adults” of the family.
Comes from an obscenely rich family, but does not just rest on the laurels of the family name/money - is a self-made millionaire (an artist/sculptor!)
Has a troubled past (drug issues) that he managed to overcome.
Will do ANYTHING for his family. (To the point of stupidity. Like take on the accusation of a murder he didn’t commit, or get engaged to his father’s mistress to protect his mother.)
His bond with his brothers is just… *sigh* Ok, I don’t have words to describe it. All I’ll say is, it’s the real love story of this show.
Stands up to his awful father on a daily basis for being an asshole to his mom.
Is a calm, soft, grounding force to his brothers, who are emotionally stunted piss-babies. Will always make them “do the right thing.”
Will get very, very mad at them for being shitheads if they don’t do the right thing. Is basically their conscience.
Is a good supportive friend to the girls of the show (who aren’t even part of his family); supports them over his brothers when said brothers are being idiots.
Is always down to be part of a good snooping “mission”.
Has a fondness for pretentious Urdu poetry that no one understands.
Has an amazing sense of humour. Snarky, sassy, but never mean-spirited.
Has a smile that feels like you’re being bathed in pure sunshine. 🌞🌞🌞
Beautiful, soulful eyes. 😍😍😍
Hair so amazing, it looks straight out of a shampoo ad.
Beard game is on point!
Once got high on painkillers (after beating up goons who were sexually harassing his brother’s love interest) and went on to profess his love for a pink cushion for a whole afternoon.
Is currently questioning his sexuality, but doing it with minimal gay panic so far, which is wholly unexpected in desi tv.
In general, he’s a good, soft-hearted, sensitive boy, who’s such a refreshing change from these ridiculous alpha male characters who are always tormenting the female lead. He’s been going through an extremely tough time lately, and it’s brought some (unwelcome) changes to his character, being very jaded and judgmental and just… kind of a dick? However, he seems to be reverting to his normal personality. (Hallelujah!)
If you’re interested in Omkara’s character, I’d recommend you watch Ishqbaaz first (here’s a link) instead of jumping straight into DBO. DBO starts at a place where Omkara’s at the lowest point of his life, and thus, is quite an unlikable character. I don’t think you’d like him at all if you start with DBO. To understand what makes the character so special and different, watch IB first to get a grasp of who he REALLY is, and then transition into DBO!

Did you feel the Rikara scene yest. was a little too casual? I mean, we have seen similar scenes in movies/serials before, and usually there is some amount of histrionics involved. But Om and Gauri were just too chilled out by the entire thing. I mean, chalo, Gauri had already seen him at P's roka, but Om was seeing her for the first time, he did freak out AT ALL, that an anjaan ladki is in his washroom, while he is not even dressed properly. What do you think?
Hey anon!
Good question! I really did wanna talk about this in detailllllllllllll, and there’s neither time nor space in the lb for that.
So yeah, at first watch, it seems like the meeting was a little TOO casual and chill. Especially considering their initial meetings in the Original Universe, this was almost anticlimactic? But then on rewatching, you pick up the brilliant subtlety with which ShreNal (and esp. Kunal) played it!
When the hair is covering his face, he comes off as mysterious and slightly threatening even.
But then he moves it, and finds not his brother, but a totally cute girl! And his eyes widen, both in surprise and slight awe. (🚨🚨🚨 CUTE GIRL ALERT! CUTE GIRL ALERT!!!!!!!! 🚨🚨🚨 )
She looks at his hand that’s trapping her, and then back at him in a mild manner, alerting him to the situation, but not struggling to get away or anything. (BECAUSE HE’S HELLA HOT AND THIS IS NOT AT ALL AN UNPLEASANT SITUATION.)
But then his inhibitions and suspicion kick in, and he frowns at her holding his shirt all intimately. (Even though his grip on her hand is still as firm as ever.) Which makes her immediately withdraw her hand.
In response, he lets go of her hand (giving her just the baaaaarest amount of space to slip her hand away), still taking her in, his brain cogs turning a million miles per minute trying to figure out who she is.
Brain giving him zero answers, he plainly asks her…
“Kaun ho tum? Aur mere kamre mein kya kar rahi ho?”
“Main… Di….”
She’s having trouble finding her words. (COZ HOT. HE’S SOOOOOOO HOT. Also this is a VERY weird situation she’s managed to get herself into. BUT MOSTLY BECAUSE HE’S SO HOT.)
“Kya di?”
He’s still confused and suspicious and not letting her off the hook, but he’s not glaring anymore, and has arranged his face into an impassive mask.
“Di ko dhundne aayi thi… Aapne kapde maange toh maine de diye.”
Plain and simple.
His face softens. She seems harmless enough. Gently ribbing at her forwardness…
“Tumse nahi maange maine.”
“Mujhe nahi pata tha aap kis se maang rahe the. Aapne maange toh maine de diye!”
She’s sheepish at the awkward situation, but it’s the truth. And so she puts it forth, with her patent confidence.
He’s amused. He likes this girl who’s forthright (AND CUTE. SO FUCKING CUTE.) Eyes full of mirth, voice and smile infinitely gentle, he explains…
“Apne bhai se maang raha tha. Rudra se.”
(Why though, why is he explaining himself to this stranger? Subconsciously telling her that there’s no lady in the picture to hand him his clothes?)
Taking cues from him and relaxing, she returns that tiny smile.
.
.
.
.
.
All that nonsense with Rudra over, she leaves the bathroom and seeks to make a quick exit, not wanting to prolong this awkward situation.
But his guard is back up. He beckons her back.
“Ruko.”
He needs a proper answer.
“KAUN ho tum?”
Asked in a much less hostile manner this time, but filled with exasperation.
“Main yahin rehti hoon, is ghar main.”
Which is a ridiculous answer, considering that it’s HIS house. So rightfully he’s like … WHUT?
Explanations.
A familiar name (Anika) and realization.
She makes an silly joke to breach the awkwardness and he can’t help but roll his eyes yet smile at its cheesiness.
As she turns to leave, he shakes his head at the madness of it all. First Shivaay acting weird, and now this. It’s been quite a night.
She turns around to see him wringing his hair to tie it up. And decides to compliment him on what caught her eye from the very first time she laid eyes on him. Because jo dil main hai, woh zabaan pe.
He’s surprised as hell.
Her work here done, with a most radiant smile, she leaves.
He’s still struck by the compliment. And the girl who delivered it.
Finally when it sinks in, he lets loose. Both his hair, and a tiny, shy smile.
I felt ShreNal played the scene beautifully! I think we’re so used to crazyass Tellywood heroes flying off the handle for barely any reason, and the heroines trembling like a leaf and breathing heavily at being touched by a man, that these subtle and realistic reactions feel underwhelming. But I really enjoyed how refreshingly normal it was! Om is still wary and suspicious at finding a stranger, but he saw that she’s just a (tiny!) girl who happened to impulsively help out (for reasons best known to her); that’s that, and he lets it go. Gauri in this universe is college-educated and modern; she most likely has a friend circle that includes boys as well, and so isn’t intimidated at the idea of being touched by someone of the male variety. That, plus her confidence and forthrightness, makes her seem slightly forward, but she’s not. This is just how regular people who have had normal and healthy social interactions throughout their lives act! All in all, an A+ scene!

cuckoldedbyddlj replied to your post “Sorry to bring up this debate again, but you had long back discussed…”
Umm, I sorta agree with the anon to an extent. After all television is a visual medium, whole point being that the audience will be ‘shown’ things. If all comes down to headcanon, then people don’t need to watch the show, they can make up their own stories and become writers themselves (which is what RIkara fans are doing now).
@cuckoldedbyddlj
that om isn’t being shown as knowing gauri is adopted, or doing his part like shivaay to go find out more, is not HIS fault. gauri hasn’t told him. she hasn’t told ANYONE. the one person that knows (shivaay) found out purely by accident through a stray conversation with her mom. the whole fam has met gauri’s mother; sabko kya sapna aayega, ki gauri is adopted? as far as everyone (but shivaay) knows, gauri HAS a biological family. then why the hell would om go investigating into her background????
the point is this: you cannot judge om as a husband as per current canon. he’s not a “good husband” or a “bad husband”; om as a husband simply does not exist. he only exists as a brother/devar.
you say that “if it comes down to headcanon….” but isn’t what the rikara fandom is doing right now - just going in the other direction from what i’m saying; that i headcanon him as a good husband; and instead headcanoning him as a bad husband???? currently canon shows that how ever it may be, gauri is happy within the marriage and has no complaints. but somehow the fandom itself seems unable to accept that, and is making up all this dissatisfaction and outrage ON HER BEHALF. which is fair; i’m all for headcanoning and analysing that her character *should not* be happy due to what a healthy relationship should entail (like *i* do for shivika’s marriage.) but don’t try and establish it as canon, when all visual proof in the universe since november 2017 most decidedly shows that rikara *are* in a happy marriage with no issues.
personally, i am satisfied with gauri opening up to om about this whenever she wants/is comfortable, but if everyone is soooo adamant on placing blame on a character for rikara’s “marital woes” RIGHT. THIS. MOMENT, why not place some of it on gauri for not being open to her husband about her background, like anika has been since even before being married to shivaay? or to go off on a different tangent about not knowing a spouse’s bg and/or pre-emptively fixing things for each other, why hasn’t gauri as a wife bothered about om’s background as a drug addict and the woman he supposedly murdered, and done her part in investigating THAT and made him feel better about it? (because he hasn’t discussed it with her, just like she hasn’t discussed this part of her bg with him.) like honestly, i love gauri as a character with all my heart, but all this white-knighting that the fandom does on the behalf of her really irks me.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaand that’s all i have to say on this topic anymore.
