Top Ten  Bajan Valentine’s Gifts for 2019
Tumblr media
Ahh! Love is in the air and the second most stressful time of the year is here. Being loved and being in love is such a beautiful thing. We always want the one we love to feel appreciated so we greet them with a gift. Forget boring perfume and the played out single rose. We’ve combed the length and breadth of Barbados in our quest for something different. We’re about to get creative with our gifts in 2019 so I’ve put together a handy list of 10 of the most impressive Bajan Valentine’s Gifts just for you.
10. Beautifully Made by Shaé
You better believe that the ladies will be starting the Valentine’s Day celebrations by getting that face extra beat. Guys, if you make the magical of hands of Beautifully Made by Shaé part of the Valentine’s Day surprise, even better. You just saved your pretty lady two hours of her life in front of the mirror working hard to look good for you. Some ladies (like me) may have only the most basic makeup skills. Get that face beat with a full set of lashes, with a fabulously flawless finish that will leave him weak in the knees as every other chick looks at you with pure envy.
Tumblr media
9. Aileena’s
No look on Valentine’s Day would be complete without a piece of statement jewelry but what makes Aileena’s pieces so special is that they’re handmade in Barbados and each one tells its own unique story. Guys, we know you don’t really care about the story but ladies have an unspoken checklist for Valentine’s Day that scores you lots of points if you can get more than one. In no specific order that would be chocolates (especially chocolate covered strawberries), wine, dessert and jewelry. Forget Pandora, Aileena’s is the latest Bajan jewelry house on the block for adjustable bracelets, necklaces and other sentimental trinkets. These fabulous pieces shine bright whether you’re at lunch or dinner with that special someone. Day rolls into a beautiful night with elegant jewelry that they can rock any time.
8. AvikeD Clothing and Apparel
This may come as a shock to some guys and gals, but you can buy your sweetheart any gift and have it personalized. Some people love twinning with matching couples’ Tees, then there is always a hidden message you can send her if 2019 is the year you choose to pop the question. Whatever your idea is, AvikeD can make it happen. Print your love letter on any surface to melt his or her heart. These experts in visual intrigue will exceed your expectations in making your gift idea come alive.
Tumblr media
7. Jalan’s Creations
You probably cannot imagine the level of skill in one person that gives you at options for Valentine’s Day. You need to check out Jalan’s Creations, all designed and handmade by Lana Nurse right here in Barbados. Get her a huge fruit basket half her height or a jaw-dropping shimmering floral arrangement and have them delivered to her office. Trust me guys, the ladies love to make everyone in the office jealous with their gifts and they will be bragging all month long. She will probably leave those flowers on her desk so long the petals will fall off. This multitalented queen of decor also creates the most breathtaking interior designs with colourful handmade accents and features perfect for any occasion but especially if you decide to pop the question.

6. Secret Full Service at Johnson’s Auto
Ladies, having a car is like having a child so co-parenting is the gift that keeps on giving. Guys, pay close attention here, you can score some serious points with wifey with this move. Take her car (her other baby) to get serviced at Johnson’s Auto. There is nothing like waking up in the morning and all of a sudden your car is making some strange noise, or worse yet, it won’t start. Johnson’s Auto is one place you can get top of the line service to keep her car driving like a dream. They will go over every inch of that vehicle with a fine-toothed comb. Sometimes I wonder if the guys inspect the car with a magnifying glass because they will spot imperfections and damage that most folks might miss. Now you’re probably wondering what services “baby” might get. Of course as the need arises you can take her car for a good old oil change, get the wheels aligned and brakes checked. Better yet, you could get the full service, including underbody wash and engine wash, so Betsy can look like she just rolled out of the showroom. Johnson’s Auto has so many little extras that may surprise you. This is no run-of-the-mill vehicle service provider, this automotive one-stop-shop does customization, mechanical and electrical work, welding, metal fabrication, they build off road jeeps, and they even do road worthy certificates. Just imagine taking her car to get “serviced” and bringing it back with a starlight roof. On Valentine’s Day, you could just hop in the back seat, sip on a glass of wine and enjoy a night under the stars.
Tumblr media
5. REDEYE Natural Wine Now this is a real treat. I don’t think I know a lady alive who doesn’t love a soothing glass of wine. But this is no ordinary wine. No please. This will make you forget your favourite sweet red. REDEYE serves up fruitilicious flavours like Five Finger, Hibiscus, Cactus and more that tickle your tastebuds with every sip. Organically grown. Ha! That was for all the millennials and hipsters peeking at this because almost everything grown in Barbados is organic. Bajans have superior taste in wine and Bajans around the world are already clamoring for more of the Redeye Natural wine selection. During some months of the year they have mango, fruit mix, lemongrass and even bayleaf wine! I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure that not many people are out there thinking mmmm I love me some bayleaf tea but I bet it would even taste better as a wine. Handcrafted and scientifically engineered in a homemade lab, REDEYE wine will leave you begging for more. You might as well get two bottles. They always sell out fast.
Tumblr media
4. Kissable Lips Pillow
After enjoying a few glasses of wine, why not seal it with a kiss? Picture it. Valentine’s night. This sexy Kissable Lips pillow is sure to get you in the mood for romance. Grab a dozen of these sweet treats for your honey. Forget the cupcakes granny used to make, these bad boys get all dressed up for the occasion. Treat the king or queen in your life with creative flavours that will knock their socks off.
Tumblr media
2. Food Truck by Johnson’s Auto
So maybe the love of your life just lost his or her job, they’re skilled in the kitchen but they can’t afford to rent a space so they can open their own restaurant. You can just head over to Johnson’s Auto and have them build a unique food truck to get them started doing what they love and making money from it. This would be an unforgettable gift that will give them a fresh start. Whether they went to culinary school and were constantly getting rejection letters or they operate from home and are longing for a fixed location, this thoughtful gift would put a smile on their face and put money in their bank account. You could get their business set up as a canteen that is pulled on a trailer or as a complete box truck - one unit with kitchen attached. This gift does require a bit of planning and it’s probably best to have your special someone consult on the design. The entire process takes about 2-3 months so you can get all the equipment like chillers, fryers and gas bottles installed. Johnson’s Auto has thought of everything, including proper work space flow with a flatscreen TV, sound system and weight distribution. Of course, they ensure all of the work done is up to code so the brand new business stays in line with government requirements. This could be the most meaningful gift for the talented chef in your life. Go from drafting and design to a full service kitchen complete with a gorgeous set of cabinets that would make any household kitchen cry with envy. Meals on wheels have never looked this good.

This is one unforgettable gift that you will both enjoy together.

Top Ten Bajan Christmas Gift List 2018
Tumblr media
10. A Corporate Box on Boxing Day
Well if you truly want to experience a Bajan Christmas, besides sinking your teeth into Farmer's Choice Ham, the best way to celebrate the holidays is by chilling with friends and family. So why not do it in style at the Barbados Turf Club in the corporate box on Boxing Day? Sip on your favourite champagne and dig into your hors d'oeuvres or bring a full Christmas spread and make it a holiday to remember. It's just a cool $1500 for the day, as you watch your favourite horses tear up the track in air-conditioned comfort.
Tumblr media
9. Go Horseback Riding
Why not take someone you love for a horseback ride? A gift like this from Cleland Equestrian Club & Horse Riding Tours is far more practical than getting a pony for Christmas. Since Barbados is one of the horseracing hotbeds, you can enjoy watching these beauties light up the track almost every Saturday. Thankfully, at Cleland you can get up close and personal with them and is at a much slower pace. Thrillseekers and adventurers won’t be disappointed here. A family of knowledgeable guides takes you on tour of the unbeaten and largely unseen paths. The horses know their way around the place so well you may not have  much directing to do, so you can just hold on and enjoy the ride. This way you and a friend or relative can take in the countryside from a different perspective. As a bonus, nature lovers will get quite an education on the plants, herbs and trees in the area.
Tumblr media
8. Foursquare 2005
Take a long sip of the world’s number one rum. Get your favourite person this smooth libation from Foursquare Rum Distillery. The company competed against 1600 liquors from over 70 countries at the international Spirits Challenge 2018 and they came out on top, with their vintage Foursquare 2005 being crowned Supreme Champion Spirit, a first for any rum in the world. As the home of rum, it is fitting that the most prestigious award should end up here in Barbados. Having fallen in love with their packaging many years ago when I first stumbled upon the sexy black bottle of R.L. Seale’s 10 Year, I was not the least bit surprised that Foursquare Rum Distillery has been named Rum Producer of the Year.
Tumblr media
7. Cobbler’s Cove Staycation
Wake up to the soothing sound of the Caribbean Sea at Cobbler’s Cove on the magical West Coast of Barbados. Take a relaxing stroll through the enchanting garden while your needs are catered to in your home away from home, where the land meets the water. Knock back a few drinks at the complimentary mini bar and indulge in sumptuous meals.
Tumblr media
6. Dinner For Two at Camelot
Speaking of sumptuous meals you need look no further than Camelot Restaurant at Cobbler’s Cove. Even if you’re not staying on holiday there you can indulge in the decadence of fine dining. Add a touch of romance to the holidays and surprise the one you love with dinner under the stars. Enjoy an unforgettable gourmet feast as the sound of the waves washes your stress away. Exquisite dishes tantalize your tastebuds as you gaze into the eyes of the one you love. From the moment you walk in, the enchanting ambiance and attentive staff will make you feel as though you have slipped into a fantasy world. Tumblr media
3. Royal Elephant Bracelet
Treat a loved one like royalty this season with a Royal Elephant bracelet from the Queen Things Collection. Artesanal Internet startup WristCulture is by far the most exciting jewelry house I have seen in years. Collections with names like King Things, Glitterati and Holiday Glitz create a sense of wonder and pieces are easily stacked so you can toy with endless style combinations. It’s a touch of sophistication designed by a Bajan for the world. To say that they aim to please in an understatement. Fans of the brand want to live in these stunning handcrafted pieces. No two designs are the same and the best part is that each piece can be customized, repaired or altered. I’m currently obsessed with their Blue Goldstone pieces but precious stones like Dragon’s Vein, Freshwater pearls and even Swarovski crystals make these rare creations all the more mesmerizing. WristCulture ships around the world so grab one of each collection and start your own.
Tumblr media
2. Lemongrass Ritual Crate Gift Basket
Lemongrass Ritual crate gift basket by West Indian Soap Co. is the definition of relaxation. Get this for a friend or relative to show how much you care or just “Treat yo self”. Self care is so underrated but after the hustle and bustle of the holidays, you might need a little of that now more than ever. If you know someone who is feeling stressed out or run down this is the ideal go-to gift, including a zen calming body scrub, eriching body cream, a bamboo wood scoop spoon and a natural loofah nestled inside a bed of natural wood shred. All that for just $60.
Tumblr media

Queen Rih is literally Santa this year with her first line of lingerie. This cobalt blue lace bodysuit is everything! Ladies, this lingerie is definitely for him but also for you to ultimately slay. How Rhea Ellen Became A YouTube Sensation
youtube
Today I take a look at the recent rise of YouTuber Rhea Ellen whose rants have shot her into online stardom. In recent days, given all the talk about the Khloe-Tristan scandal, folks are touting Rhea as a bit of a fortune teller, for her comments on how the couple’s relationship started. Perhaps she said said what many people were thinking but were too afraid to say but in any case, she had shared her insight in the video posted about a month ago. What started out as a small vlog with her bestie in 2012 has now evolved into a budding empire that hit 10,000 subscribers last week, then jumped from 11,000 two days later to now 13 754 subscribers and climbing. Simply by turning her snaps into YouTube rants, she has shot her social media career into the Internet stratosphere but let’s dig deeper into why that one act has been so successful.
While scrolling through Twitter a few weeks ago, I first stumbled across a clip from one of the Rhea Rants YouTube videos called I Hate The Dentist. The moment she tweeted GONNA GET PREGNANT SO I GET FREE DENTAL CARE, I knew that Rhea (ReeRee) was born to make people laugh. She’s one of the funniest people to walk the earth. Initially you find yourself drawn to her sparkling personality. It sucks you in and before you know it you’re binge-watching a bunch of Rhea’s Rants because they are ridiculously hilarious. She brings you into her world, makes you feel like the two of you could be friends and viewers love the fact that she is so extra. Fans have taken to Twitter, showing love and calling for her to hit the big screen.
Immediately you notice Rhea’s fashion sense and whether she’s wearing a simple sweater or a chic outfit, her face is flawless. Her skin glows and she unashamedly flaunts her black beauty. Have you seen her gorgeous head wraps? This UK YouTuber of Jamaican heritage is always consistently covered, she dresses modestly and seems to dislike very revealing clothing. Certainly refreshing. Ladies, stop baring it all for the Likes. Of course, the ones doing that won’t see this because they don’t read, but I digress.
Every time Rhea makes a video, she is having a passionate conversation with viewers. While some YouTubers seem to thrive on inconceivable levels of stupidity and vapid nonsense, Rhea Ellen has blossomed as an online personality who not only cares about a plethora of topics but she has interesting opinions. She forms intelligent arguments from her own perspective, turning the most mundane experiences into thought-provoking comedy skits. Hitting you in the chest with slang, bumbaclaat and sometimes unspellable mumblings, she has an impressive way of articulating her pet peeves, while leaving you in stitches with her crazy antics.
Fans get exactly what they want when they come to Rhea Ellen’s channel. Rhea just being her undiluted, unapologetic self. Do you know what makes this so beautifully special? Last week Rhea Ellen was trending on YouTube, even in the wake of that social media platform’s demonetization effective January 2018 because she isn’t doing it for the money. The single most important reason for the growth of Rhea Ellen’s channel is her authenticity. She is not trying to copy anyone, she has a clear, consistent message and she won’t compromise her values to please anyone. What you see is what you get. Authenticity is the star element of a winning strategy that Rhea may have been completely unaware of at the time. In a world that is trying to homogenize us, that tries to tell us how to act, how to dress, think and feel, we need more unicorns like her encouraging us to be the best version of ourselves to live our best life.

Top Ten Bajan Christmas Gifts 2017
Tumblr media
I know you’ve been sitting on the edge of your seat and I’m sure you’re gonna love the gifts on this year’s list of Bajan products. Sure, you could buy anything that’s imported but there’s something so special about getting a gift that was made right here in Barbados. Let’s get right into it then.
10. Sophisticated Centrepiece - Jalans Creations - One of the most important parts of the Christmas celebration in Barbados and around the world is having Christmas lunch with the family. Perhaps one of the most underestimated but memorable elements of this feast is the centrepiece, so why not give the gift of decor this Christmas? Whether you have a complete tablescape planned or you prefer the minimalist approach, your centrepiece will be a focal point at the dinner table. Before I go any further, you need to know that Bajans are veryyy crtitical. They will have no problem telling people that your table “had look pop down” or “stink”. Five years from now I guarantee they will still be talking about it. That’s why I was so relieved to stumble upon this Blue Bouquet by Lana Nurse, founder of Jalan’s Creations. I kind of wish I could have one in every room. It makes me feel like I was spirited away to a fairytale sprinkled with magic dust. Just gorgeous! If you want one you better hurry though because Lana tells me you have til December 21st to place your order.
Tumblr media
9. Vegan Cork Bags - Ole Luck - Guys, cork bags are a thing now and they look so cool. I have to admit, this was the first time I ever heard of Vegan bags. Accessories can be vegan now? I couldn’t help but wonder how they taste. Now before we start chowing down, I want you to rest assured that buying a woman a bag for Christmas is always a good idea. Still, what makes these bags so special are the fact that they’re environmentally responsible. No harmful plastics and for the animal lovers among us, no leather. Don’t ask me how, but a guy by the name of Andy makes all these gorgeous bags by hand. If you’re feeling really patriotic, you can get a wristlet with 246 or the broken trident on it, but I fell in love with the Wayuu purse. The Wayuu are indigenous people living in Colombia and Northwest Venezuela, described as the people of the sun, sand and wind. Wayuu women make a specific type of woven bag with unique vibrant patterns reflected in the sash on these Ole Luck beauties. Fun fact: The Wayuu language, which is called Wayuuniki, is part of the Arawak family.
Tumblr media
8. Crocheted Bikini - Chain Loops Crochet - My gawd! What can I say about this talented diva? Owner Jessica Martindale creates customized fashion and soft home furnishings, while crocheting her way into your heart. Now the first time I saw her crocheted bikinis I knew I had to have one of her pieces. I ordered two. Forget your grandmother’s doilies. Jessica designs one-of-a-kind crocheted jumpers, skirts, dresses, chic baby blankets, earrings and even slippers. Yes, you heard me. She crochets frikkin slippers. But back to this sexy bikini tho. I’m not even telling you to buy this for someone else. This thing will make your life ten times sexier. You worked hard all year so you best believe you deserve it. Yasss!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Gold glitter Barbados Throw Pillow - ChicFit Inc - This cute little cushion stopped me right in my tracks. This ain't no run-of-the-mill throw pillow. You can decorate any space with it, no matter the colour scheme. Classy level 1000! Listen to me. ChicFit is not messing around. They put a dang Barbados map on a black pillow and glitterized it in gold. What the what?! This throw cushion will change your life so you're welcome. Just gaze upon its glory. Also, can I just say how much I love ChicFit's logo? It speaks to me. It says “I love yoga times infinity”... or someting* so.
Tumblr media
6. Deck The Halls - Classy Raggs Interiors - You have no idea what this means but you will. The brainchild of Ana Gill, Classy Raggs will leave you in stitches. If you’ve ever imagined what a home makeover should look like, then Ana should have her own TV show. Her work is phenomenal. She creates bespoke furniture, soft furnishings, you name it, she can bring your dream to life. Just look at what she did to this yacht! Yachtastic!
Tumblr media
5. Smell My Nuts - West Indian Soap Co. - Not to be left out of the game, there’s definitely something for the guys too. As gross as it sounds, this was one of the most hilarious Christmas gifts I’ve stumbled upon thus far. There’s Man Soap, Man Wash and Man Lotion. Your man does not need another tie. Stop it. He wants you to get creative and think outside the box. Get him a gift that’s both playful and practical. Go ahead!  Smell deez nuts... coconuts, that is ;)
Tumblr media
4. A Pinterest Box - HomeMade Luxe - If you’re heavily into DIY and crafting or you’re all thumbs like me and need detailed instructions to make anything, then this is the gift for you or someone you know. Former Barbados athlete Keitha Moseley-Dendy, The Bajan Texan, as she calls herself, started this business from a simple idea to bring Pinterest into real life. Stop pinning and start crafting, folks. Take all those cute projects you love online and decorate every room in your house with them. Brilliant idea! One might wonder where the mother of twin girls could possibly find the time but she spent many nights on her living room floor packing hundreds of boxes to keep her customers happy. That type of sweat equity deserves some kind of award. Now that HomeMade Luxe is finally available in Barbados, don’t lag!* In minutes you can have the sexiest pinned projects in your home. This month’s box is a Starburst Mirror. Who doesn’t love a gift that is both fun and functional? Shoot, you could even get some friends together and throw a Pinning Party.
Tumblr media
3. Pillowgrams - Simmone Thorpe started thinking the other day about how wasteful cards are. To be honest, I never really know what to do after I read a card someone has given me. It’s so pretty I can’t bear to throw it away but I can’t really hang it up either so it invariably gets shoved down in a drawer somewhere, only to be found months later. You can’t enjoy the beauty of a greeting card from inside a drawer. Simmone wanted to find a way to make the memory last in a way that’s visible and functional. That’s how the Say it With a Pillowgram message pillow was born. This gift can be cute, funny, inspirational, sentimental, you can even add a photo of you and your loved one to create a wonderful keepsake. Pelt* a few of these customizable throw pillows into the mix to enhance your decor. Ladies, don’t we always try to stop at two and end up buying six?
Tumblr media
2. Galaxy Eyeshadow - Fenty Beauty - This one was tough, I put this at the top of my personal Christmas Gift List because Rihanna. Seriously, though, what girl on earth doesn’t want eyeshadow that shines like diamonds and reflects all the colours of the milky way? I want my face to sparkle like the night sky too. Basically giving any gift from the Fenty Beauty line would make any woman in the world scream, from Match Stix to lip gloss to Trophy Wife highlighter. I’m dreaming of a glitter eyeshadow Christmas.
1. But First... Prosecco - West Indian Soap Co. - Start clutching your pearls ladies because this next gift will change your life. You know that moment when you never thought something was even possible and then all of a sudden Jesus and the whole universe answered your silent, unspoken prayers? This is basically what the But First Prosecco line of decadence is all about. Drowning your sorrows takes on a whole new meaning when you can literally bathe in your favourite sparkling wine. Cleopatra bathed in milk so the mere thought of bathing in Prosecco and smelling like it just tickles me pink. I can’t wait to be drenched in Prosecco.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for full features of some of these wonderful Bajan businesses. Big shoutout to the members of Women Making Money Work ladies networking group.
Bonus*
Bajan Glossary
If you’re not a Bajan here’s a key to the terms you need to know.
Had look pop down/ had look stink: This means that whatever you were talking about looked terrible, not just bad. Basically pop down and stink are interchangeable.
Someting: This means something. Someting so: This means something along those lines.
Don’t lag: This means don’t get caught napping/ don’t delay.
Pelt: This means throw, but forcefully.

Why Port St. Charles Should Be On Everyone’s NYE Bucketlist
Tumblr media
Old Year’s Night is what we call New Year’s Eve here in Barbados. If you are yet uninitiated in the ways of how we Bajans celebrate Old Year’s Night, we tend to go all out. We usually dress to the nines in silver, black, gold; anything shiny and expensive is worn on this night. The year 2016 will go down in history as, by far, the most epic Old Year’s Night ever, all because of a magical place called Port St. Charles Yacht Club.
My journey begins on the highway. Highways actually help alleviate traffic on every night except Old Year's Night in Barbados. The traffic past Redmans Village had slowed to a crawl. This was where I started feeling smart for thinking of an alternate route. I turn around by the roundabout and go up Shop Hill instead. Brilliant, I'm so smart. I'll get to my destination long before those losers stuck in traffic. Ha! I feel pretty darn confident until I get lost in St. Thomas (don't ask) and reach a fork in the road. Left would take me down the steepest, darkest hill I've ever seen and and right is through a dark road with no streetlights and canefields on both sides. Nope! It is at this point that I choose life. I turn that car around quick and head back to a road which I prayed would take me back to the highway and it did.
Tumblr media
In minutes I am flying towards my destination and I'm at the entrance of Port St. Charles, a luxury Marina in Barbados in the parish of St. Peter. The guard asks me my name and I feel so fussy when he instantly lifts the security bar. I make my way to the Yacht Club and one thing that will never get old is that feeling of excitement on seeing the row of lights leading up to it. I actually find a parking spot and go in. The party is already in high gear. Music is playing, couples are eating and chatting, families are soaking up the atmosphere under the blue glow. Danielle is a lovely hostess, a gentle soul. I am first seated at the bar, because everyone wants to start New Year's Eve with a glass of bubbly. On the other side folks could swim up to the bar but the water is freezing. The pillars are wrapped in light and the place is charged with energy.
Tumblr media
We get seated and the first thing that catches my eye is the table setting. Deep, rich colour and the shimmering napkin ring... simple details truly leave a lasting impression. When my waitress brings my meal I am awed both by the plating and the plate. We're dining at a luxury Marina, so obviously the plate would be shaped like a wave. The Surf and Turf is one of the most memorable dishes I've ever tried. The buttery melt-in-your mouth lobster gives you a pop of flavour with a sweet yet savory punch of gorgonzola cream. The pan-seared tenderloin is juicy and plays beautifully with the bourbon demi-glaze, as the crisp bite of the sugar snap peas adds an intriguing texture.
Tumblr media
While I enjoy my meal, there is no shortage of entertainment as the DJ cranks out the most popular tunes of 2016 and gives the party people a chance to holler all the words. When the DJ says 5 minutes left in 2016 I'm up outta my seat and dancing hard. One minute left, then he does a glorious countdown, we scream Happy New Year and everyone on the dance floor kiss and hug each other. Black, white, purple (no one was really purple but you get what I mean) folks from all walks of life greeting strangers like family. It was a sight to behold. Then, as we look across the water, the fireworks display lights up the sky and the water as the DJ continues to play merry tunes.
Tumblr media
Drinks flow all night at the bar well until about 2 a.m. You could literally ask the bartenders to make any drink imaginable. General Manager Stephen Austin boogied with the guests and staff well into the wee hours of the morning. This guy deserves a medal. He was in the kitchen when I arrived and flitted about all night ensuring each guest was comfortable and having a lovely evening. Kudos to Chef Shaheeda on preparing a 7-course dinner and creating an array of exquisite, cleverly named dishes including Symphony of The Sea, Coast Is Clear and Walk The Plank. One decadent dessert goes by the name of Black Pearl and it sounds like a mesmerizing chocolate overdose. Special thanks to Restaurant Manager Keisha, Danielle and the entire staff for working tirelessly to make Old Year's Night such a special celebration I hope to repeat every year. Definitely put Port St. Charles on your bucketlist of places to be in 2017. Even if you can't make it on the last day of the year, you can come come any other day and dive into a sumptuous lunch or stop in for dinner.

Why Every Woman Should Wear Christian Siriano
youtube
New York Fashion Week will never be the same. That’s because Christian Siriano dropped his latest bombshell collection on the fashion world as he spirited us away to Capri. Every article about the designer since then has praised Siriano for breaking down barriers of what I like to call “sizeism” within the fashion world but this collection signified to me so much more. From Project Runway to the NYFW runway, his unique way of dressing women can be described in one word - movement. It’s no surprise, then, that female stars are lining up in their numbers to be dressed in his brand of luxury and last night’s Emmys red carpet proved it.
The fluidity of each piece during his show speaks to the ease with which he shapes fabric for the feminine form. On the catwalk, each garment seems to dance to the rhythm of its own beat, much like the designer. Quite a few things struck me throughout his show. Craftsmanship, for one. Christian Siriano’s garments, as delicate and whimsical as many of them happen to be, have a quality as close to perfection as you can get. The way he creates frills and girly flounces, it always leaves you wondering how in the world he executes his hems. His attention to detail and meaningful, deliberate use of color made me want just about everything. From the tangerine jumpsuit, to turquoise dresses, cutouts, stunning gowns and jumpsuits that wanted to be dresses. There were crop tops, a black gown with a peekaboo turquoise cape and that hat-cape thing. Some pieces defied description.

Can we just talk about this number I like to call “Tangerine Dream”? (photo credit @british-vogue)
What about innovation? Christian Siriano took the opportunity to redesign heels and pumps. He redefined classic women’s footwear, giving it a brand new silhouette. When I saw those shoes peeking out flamboyantly from beneath already stunning pieces, I could feel the designer’s courage and vibrant personality shining through.
Let’s talk a bit about sizeism and its significance within the world of fashion. Over the past two centuries women everywhere have been bombarded with images of Western and European standards of beauty. Sure, there was an element of race within that and we’ll get to that but all women feel the weight of the pressure placed on them to be thin or to attain that ever-elusive “perfect weight” or size. The so-called average woman would have been considered too fat or too short to have a modelling career. Some of us are told our breasts are too big or too small, our hips are too wide. It’s like we’re forever waiting in line at the greatest ride at the state fair, constantly being told you have to be “this” height and only “this” wide. Meanwhile, we want to scream at the world that as women, our worth cannot be measured by a measuring tape. At best, these women who did not fit that “perfect” top model image were told they could be a hand or foot model, reduced to a single body part. By any standards that is degrading.
Another degrading industry standard that we as women have accepted for far too long is the way the world of fashion tries to separate us by size. The fact that mainstream stores don’t carry past certain sizes is ludicrous to me. If you are a woman and you walk into the women’s clothing department you should find something that fits. No woman should have to end up shopping at a “specialty” store for full figured women. Everyone isn’t a freakin size zero. How do they come up with their sizes? Who are the imaginary women they think they’re dressing?
Tumblr media

As a baby, my fat rolls had fat rolls, but that did not last. In my teens and early adulthood I struggled with my weight but it’s not what you think. While most women around me were trying to get thin, my battle was the opposite (much to their disdain) - trying to put on weight. I tried everything, including my so-called ice cream diet (basically eating ice cream as often as I could get my hands on some). I lost weight easily and so often that my poor mother would take me to the doctor, who confirmed her fears that I was underweight. Standing at 5′6, I once had dropped down to a mere 116lbs. In the Caribbean, including Barbados, where I’m from, being skinny was not desirable so nobody around me could understand the fear of wasting away to nothing. In any case, I thought if I ever tried modelling I could only be a hand model. The point is, society doesn’t want us to be too fat or too thin but there is no perfect weight and I have stopped buying into the lies.
While curves are now starting to be celebrated among women, it took centuries for us to get there. In fashion, not so long ago there was no such thing as too thin, when far too many models most literally starved themselves to death in an effort to achieve the ideal weight that some designers, agencies and other industry officials dictated within the industry. Back then, models struggling with serious conditions like anorexia and bulimia was the norm. What Christian Siriano has done with the Capri collection is to include models of all shapes and sizes, effectively shattering the once long-held tradition of the modelling stereotype. He has, in essence, created an environment within the fashion industry that encourages self-love and promotes self-confidence while fighting the negative aspects of the fashion world like discrimination and eating disorders. When has a luxury fashion designer ever taken a chance on full figured models in their collection in the history of modelling? Big and beautiful ladies can wear couture while looking elegant.

This is what diversity looks like. Get used to it. (photo credit @pretareporter)
Now to touch on the diversity that pervaded Christian Siriano’s NYFW offering. This topic has been on everybody’s lips over the past week because he frankly made it his business to include almost every race, hue or skintone imaginable. No skin was too light or too dark. His entire show was about positive body image. At a time when the world is crying out for healing, he chose to celebrate our oneness as women, so race was never an issue. In my opinion, the designer chose not to bow down to any Western standard because that does not reflect who he is as a person, nor does it match his philosophy towards life. This collection was all about who Christian Siriano is as a person. Still the gentle soul we fell in love with from the days of Project Runway, it shows that the industry has not ruined him and fame has not changed him. It speaks to his integrity as much as it shows his humanity.
The 2016 Emmys

Before I could even recover from his NYFW collection, Christian Siriano continued to surprise me, dressing a mind-boggling ten stars at the Emmys for a blend of Black Girl Magic and women’s empowerment rolled into one epic night. Names like Leslie Jones, Neve Campbell, Niecy Nash and Angela Bassett slayed in Siriano til there was blood on the red carpet. Can we please talk about how Angela Bassett looked like the Queen of America, with @TheCut tweeting “bow down”? What about that stunning white gown that made Niecy Nash look like the sexiest angel ever?! Neve Campbell jumped from the front row of his recent fashion show right into one of the most ostentatious black lace gowns that has ever graced the Emmys red carpet.

The exclusion of otherness that once typified the fashion world is dead and buried. This is the rebirth of the industry. This movement the designer has created will be known as the turning point in couture. This is about celebrating and truly empowering women, all women. When Christian Siriano walked out his stunning models of every height, size, shape, shade and race like it was the most natural thing, that’s because it should be.

Top Ten Bajan Women in 2016
As we say goodbye to the month of August and all it had in store for Barbados, from Crop Over to the Olympics in Rio to the VMAs, I could not help but take a look back at the contribution of Bajan women. Barbadian women stand tall, with the best of the best on the local and international stage. In what has been described as the year of the woman I would like to celebrate and salute the ones that have made and continue to make an impact on our lives.
The month of August was indeed an eventful one for my country Barbados.
Renee Ratcliffe
Tumblr media
Bandleader, mother, friend, Renee Ratcliffe died on my birthday. Although I never met her, this woman’s life and death shook me to the core. She herself said she would die doing what she loved and she did just that. Still, she nor I could never have guessed the ripple effect all of this would have had on me. You see, I never had the opportunity to meet Renee but the way she lived her life has seeped into every fibre of my being. I have never jumped for Crop Over and probably never will. It’s not really my thing but the passion and excitement she had for life, living it to the fullest and enjoying every moment is something we should all emulate. Thank you Renee. Your contribution to Crop Over will not soon be forgotten and your legacy extends far beyond this festival so that we all should be ten times more committed to our families, friends and purpose on this earth.
Aziza
Tumblr media
Aziza has been crowned Barbados’ new calypso Queen after almost three decades of kings. I cannot fully express how proud that makes me. Women have taken a back seat for so long in calypso, not for lack of trying because women have always performed on the soca stage, since the likes of Singing Francine, who always makes me think of Celia Cruz for some reason. In any case, we celebrated Aziza with a huge parade and all the fanfare she deserved. Calypso artistes toil tirelessly, spending their own money on voice training, recording, production, costumes, dancers, props, touring and everything else that soca entails. Most people don’t make back what they have spent and still make the sacrifice every season, performing in the tents regardless, to keep this rich part of our culture alive. Kudos to Aziza, this is just the beginning for this talented young lady. Your contribution to soca in Barbados will never be forgotten.
TC
Tumblr media
That brings me to our next performer, Terencia Coward. While there was controversy involving TC’s comments after her Pic-O-De-Crop Finals display, I have to admit that I admire her dogged determination. Some may consider TC a sucker for punishment, while others may see her efforts as a sign of consistency. Wherever Bajans may stand on that spectrum, TC has always given me hope that a woman could win the crown and this year one did. Mission accomplished.
Natahlee & Shontelle
Tumblr media
Perhaps the cutest and most underestimated duo in Bajan soca. Their hit song Colours is a timeless wonder that has not lost one ounce of flavour. Separately, they are giants in their own right. My favourite jam from Shontelle is T-Shirt but my anthem is Impossible. Natahlee is a soca powerhouse and whenever I hear her voice I smile. Many may not know that she was trained in drama by the great Marcia Burrowes and I secretly hope to see Natahlee cross over to film. Their hot track for 2016 Fyah seemed to have been eclipsed by the Bashment Soca frenzy that swept through Crop Over like wildfire this year.
Alison Hinds
Tumblr media
Speaking of Bashment Soca, I was more than surprised to find that our Queen of Soca Alison Hinds was teaming up with the new school Bashment Soca stars. She flew all the way to St. Maarten for the Soca vs. Dancehall showdown to invariably teach folks how to “wuk up” which I hope the American media would stop referring to as (ick) twerking. Staying relevant and interesting is always key for an artiste. Still, I must admit I absolutely love her “soul-try” vocals on ballads. Yes, I had to make up a word for what Alison Hinds does with her music, soulful and sultry. Sidebar: Thank you Soca Queen for dedicating your life to promoting soca and Barbados around the world. Also thank you for teaching fake Uber drivers a lesson. Bajan gals are not to be messed with.
Pat Brathwaite
Tumblr media
Thanks to the design genius of Pat Brathwaite, Barbados is now known around the world as having some of the most stylish athletes at the recent Olympics in Rio. Although our incredible team members did not bring home the gold, we certainly showed our colours. Using a geometric shape print representing the colours of our flag, along with a stunning gold blazer, Pat Brathwaite made the world do a double take on our athletes as they crossed he floor on the night of the opening ceremony. For a country as small as ours, our athletes representing us in their numbers and going down in history as part of the top 10 best dressed countries, is a moment the world will not soon forget.
Akela Jones
Tumblr media
I truly could not be more proud of the Barbados Olympic Team. The one person I thought was going to come home with gold was Akela Jones but her performance at this year’s Rio Olympics far surpassed anything I could have imagined. For one so gifted in athletics, this being her first Olympics, she did not hesitate in giving her all. And by all I mean she did it all. Instead of focusing all her energies on one or two disciplines, Akela tested the full limits of her body by signing up for the heptathlon and completing the games injury-free. I kept saying wow, this girl is incredible and I eventually stopped caring about medals, as my admiration and respect grew for this athlete who has been described as “unbeatable”. Her determination is second to none and we will see her reach far greater heights in the near future. I must say this, though. As a country, we need to be careful how we treat our athletes and as members of the media we must be sensitive in how we report on our athletes. Headlines with a negative slant are not now or ever what our Bajan athletes need. It is our duty to encourage, promote and protect our athletes. Akela, you and your fellow Olympians did Barbados proud.
Rihanna
Tumblr media
No list celebrating Barbadian women could ever be complete without Queen Rih. I know what you’re thinking, we already have so many queens in this group but by far Rihanna would be number one, as one of the most famous artistes of all time. Having just won the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award at the recently held VMAs at the tender age of 28 (who even does that?), her musical achievements are mind-boggling. For the eight-time Grammy Award winner, the list goes on and on, including 14 Billboard awards and selling 54 million albums. Rihanna lives her life without limits and she continues to impress me with her entrepreneurial spirit. Not only is she now a fashion designer with her own line of clothing and fragrances, she has been a creative director, an actress, a Covergirl and is the first black female to represent Dior. Rihanna, the “innoventor” (yea, I said it) has even created Dior’s La Forge-inspired eyewear and those sexylicious Manolo Blahnik pants-boots thingies she wears (I need a pair). Regardless of how many platinum song certifications and accolades she may have, what I admire most about this young woman is her heart of gold and love for Barbados. From countless donations to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, to the Clara Lionel Foundation to giving scholarships to persons in Barbados, the Caribbean and further afield in any field of study they wish to pursue, she thrives on helping others. Robyn Fenty, Barbados loves you.
Melissa Eastmond
Tumblr media
Last but by no means least, one woman who touched my life personally over the past couple of months is Melissa Eastmond. She is not a celebrity or star but she might be single mother of the year. As a single mom, it broke my heart to hear how this young woman struggled to support her three children. This lady’s death and life moved me to tears as I reflected on her life and the tragic effects of poverty. She literally spent every waking hour trying to take care of her children and provide for them financially, taking on as many extra shifts at work as she could get, leaving home exhausted, coming home exhausted. Being the only employed person in her household, all of the financial responsibility fell on her, to the point that even their water bill fell into arrears and the service was disconnected. How did she manage all the while without water for her children, going to work under those harsh conditions? I doubt she ate or slept properly. None of that mattered to her, her single concern was for her children and her family, without a thought for her own well-being. She sacrificed everything for her children and that is the definition of love. No mother should have to go through that but too many single mothers do. This tribute to Melissa Eastmond is for all single mothers, especially the ones in Barbados. I love you all. (photo credits 1, 2, 3, 9 Barbados Today)

Twitterversing: How One Tweet Almost Ruined Me
Having just gotten back into Twitter, I was feeling like quite the noob. With the help of a dear friend, however I’ve been navigating through the bright spots of innovation, as well as the soft, dark underbelly of the Twitterverse. I had a moment of uncertainty where I even thought of shutting down my account forever, such was the disappointment I felt at some of the social media platform’s shortcomings but I cannot simply abandon something if I fully intend to change it for the better.
My journey back to Twitter started with my curiosity. Nowadays, you can hardly hear a news story without someone’s tweet being shared with the world. I had to find out what made it so awesome to its faithful followers. I had only been on there for a few days, exploring, following entities whose work ethic I admire and then I reached out to a fashion icon who became the epitome of beauty for me inside and out. To my shock and awe, she actually responded!
Here I was, talking, actually communicating with a lady whose sense of self helped strengthen my own. I was on the freakin’ moon. Then in a split second, though, my elation turned into shame so intense that it shook me to my soul. In my haste to reach out to her, I did not realize the pain and hurt my innocent comment could have inflicted. It was the start of a poem about her that had laid dormant in my mind for about a year. My shame turned into horror when the same words I imagined to be poetic, became one big, ugly mess, as I read comment after comment from her and her followers saying what a horrible person I must be to say something like that. I had to look myself in the mirror and hold my own comment under the microscope to see how what I said could be hurtful.
It did not matter how I intended my message to go over. The mere fact that someone was hurt by it was enough for me. Whenever you mess up, if you ever hurt someone’s feelings apologize immediately. You don’t even have to understand the reason why they were hurt, because the truth is you may never find out. You just never know what another person is going through so it should always be appropriate for you to apologize regardless of how you feel. Sometimes it’s just not about you.
Before I knew her name, her outer beauty was stunning to me and I tried to coin a phrase to contain that beauty and was going to start a poem about her using it. Now, due to a sobering amount of negative feedback, I am thankful I did not post that poem. I’m pretty sure I would not have been able to contain that poopstorm. Not only do I have the opportunity to improve my poem but more importantly, I have a greater understanding of my responsibility on earth and I have an increased sense of awareness of the effects of bullying and how words continue to hurt. I believe it’s extremely important to own up to your mistakes and work hard not to repeat them.
Then, as if the universe and God were not finished with me yet, I sat in utter disgust as hateful human beings tore apart Leslie Jones with their racist words, to the point where she left Twitter completely. She, too, is one I admire for her sense of self, her confidence and her ability to inspire other girls and women of colour. Some people mentioned a fake Twitter account under her name that spewed hate speech and some accused Ms. Jones of posting racist tweets too.
In both instances I questioned whether I should stay on Twitter, whether I should pack up my thoughts and call it quits. Instead, I will stay and let you guys help me decide if I should write my poem or not. This newfound level of shame-induced humility is forcing me to depend on you and yes, this is way outside my comfort zone.
I have a big event to report on today for Bajan Connection so I have to rush off but I’ll leave you with this... It’s not just sticks and stones, words affect skin and bones and everything in between.

Elder Care Becomes Elder Scare
There was a video circulating the Barbadian Internet a couple days ago of an elderly lady being abused by her supposed caretakers in a nursing home. I have no idea how long the video was because I barely managed to stomach about the first ten seconds of it. I could not watch any more.
I took to social media immediately, proclaiming my outrage, demanding names and justice, specifically for the guilty parties to be charged. Lo and behold, justice was swift and sure, as I woke yesterday morning to a name and the arrest of the owner of said name.
Now, people who are close to me know my grandmother suffers from Alzheimer’s. She has some good days and she has some really bad days. Anyone who has had experience with this illness and witnessed it first hand, understands how challenging it is for these persons to understand and perform simple tasks we take for granted every day. So it becomes vital to your own sanity to hold onto your great sense of humour when they have their bad days. It’s sometimes the only way to survive the absolute frustration and helplessness that comes over you.
Up until that time I was sure I could not endure another moment of: gran-gran attacking me for stopping her from eating uncooked kidney beans, me physically body blocking her from making a break for it (she’s a runner), gran-gran stealing and hiding just about everything in the house that’s not nailed down, including my breakfast. I thought I was done, I had had it and it would be just easier to let gran-gran go back to a home.
Three seconds into that video, I started clutching my pearls, I was horrified and then blinded by rage. All I wanted to do was hold gran-gran a little closer, a little longer, hold her forever maybe. I was scared. I was scared for that poor little old lady who had to suffer at the hands of those disgusting savages (I think I saw two people hitting her in the video).
Little did I know that on my way to filming a performance yesterday, I would have the honour of happily joining the Walk For Justice in my car. Well, along Bay Street anyways. After the tragedy of little Jahan King, I am finally starting to see justice meted out in my country and social media, arguably especially Facebook, has become an integral part of speeding up the process. Public outcry on social media has lit a fire under our criminal justice system with unprecedented success and as I passed a sea of white shirts, it made me feel just a little more proud to be a Bajan.
I rushed over to Q in the Community to see WithSaltN’Peppa perform At Fifty And Over “the unofficial Q song” at the finale of the Banks Go Big or Go Home Giveaway at Kensington Oval. With standing room only on the dance floor, the crowd still managed to sway to the infectious beat. He held his own, alongside the likes of veteran calypsonians Classic and Blood. Those folks know how to age like fine wine. I felt like I was on the senior citizens catwalk. With the variety of jumpers that passed before me I realized Barbados must have the most fashionable seniors on the face of the earth.
Q is the total flipside of the aging process. Those folks are so full of life and are living life to the fullest. Apparently, as soon as the ladies get their pension cheque, they go shopping for a new outfit for Q. Yesterday one lady referred to a pole as her dance partner and completely redefined pole dancing... Long live Barbados - the country with the most active aging population!

Top Ten Bajan Christmas Gifts
Tumblr media
So Christmas is finally here. We want to give you all a treat by suggesting a fully Bajan Christmas Gift list. We teased you with the first five Bajan Christmas Gifts on epocradio.com yesterday and the wait for the rest of our ideas is over. Here goes:
10. Kicking off our list is Hatchman’s Premium Cheeses. If you’re a lover of cheese like me, this will not seem weird at all. Hatchman's Premium Cheeses, with intriguing names like Gun Bolt and Bajan Brie, will tantalize your tastebuds. Imagine all the things you can do with these local handcrafted cheeses besides just popping a piece in your mouth. It’s not just about cheese and crackers. If you’re entertaining this Christmas you can plan your cocktail dinner around these tasty and I dare say rare finds. Pair them with fruit, create yummy appetizers or just throw them into your main course. Add them to a gift basket for that special someone. The possibilities are endless.
Tumblr media
9. Next up is Meadows In The Sun. What goes better with local cheese than 100% Bajan wine? We stumbled upon this intriguing Barbadian winemaker. Meadows in The Sun is real wine made in Barbados and one bottle of this could make for an unforgettable gift, especially when you’re sipping flavours like Carambola, Gooseberry and Passion Fruit. The Sorrel wine is also the perfect addition to any Christmas spread. Their port wines infused with chocolate, raspberry or orange will inspire endless creations in the kitchen.
8.   Champagne Bottle Candles. What if you’re more into bubbly? Fear not. We think this gift from Wild Island Trading Company could be a gamechanger. Joining forces with environmental partner Lone Star Restaurant, this company has upcycled discarded bottles of your favourite Champagne to put a new spin on the Christmas candle. What an environmentally responsible way to impress someone you love. Capture that feeling of nostalgia when you all giggled the night away. Each candle weighs 3lbs and is nestled in its own crate on a bed of natural wood shred, starting at $60. Who doesn't want their home to smell like champagne?
Tumblr media
7. Ruby's Magical Gift. How about a little something for the kids? Written and illustrated by Simmone Thorpe (now available in hardcover on Createspace). Every little girl in Barbados should have this book at story time. Let’s throw out the old boring fairytales and replace them with Bajan stories by Barbadian authors. What a novel (wink wink) idea.
6. A Spa Treatment at The Spa Lounge. Get the lady in your life a mani-pedi, Diamond microdermabrasion, full body wax, eyebrows, mink lashes or get a fun eyebrow tint. Call 828-0200. Ladies, get the look you crave for Christmas and Old Year's Night (that's what we call New Year's Eve). Trained in Manhattan, this esthetician has over 11 years in the biz and is 100% Bajan born and raised.
Tumblr media
5. Bridgeland Volumes I and II. Guys, we haven’t forgotten you. What do you get for the guy that’s got it all? Chattel House Books has got the answer. Bridgeland is a graphic novel from the mind and pen of Marc Gibson and you’d be hard-pressed to find any kind of novel more Bajan than this. From an intriguing development of characters and plot, to his creation of suspense and ability to drag raw emotion from readers, it’s no wonder Bajan Connection has described Bridgeland as “unputdownable”. Yes, that’s a word now. You’re welcome.
4. A Beach Massage by Tutch Mobile Spa. No trip to Barbados would be complete without this one. Truthfully, if you get someone a beach massage for Christmas, it could be hard to top that next year. Lounging on a pristine beach in Barbados and enjoying a relaxing massage. After all that exhausting holiday shopping, you deserve a break. Holy crap, they even have a special on. “Spa Gift Certificates Available” and you get a Free Facial with your purchase. Just Call (246) 233-0901. That’s the beauty of Christmas in Barbados. Warm weather and sunny beaches. Gotta feel bad for the poor saps shoveling snow every day. Wish you were here  :)
3. Floating Cabanas. Speaking of relaxation, we’re talking uberindulgence. After a soothing massage, why not treat yourself to a floating cabana or two to spend the rest of your day out on the water, sipping your favourite drink. Just call the booking agent @ (246) 269-6854 to rent one. Add a touch of luxury to your day at the beach. Guys, here’s a tip, if you want some time alone with that special lady, this could help you score some brownie points for creativity and romance.
2. A Jetpack ride. See? We’ve even got something for the more adventurous among us. You just strap the water jetpack thingys onto your feet. The sci-fi looking contraption is attached to a hose and you basically “fly” or “levitate” above the water. Water sports gone mad, and we love it. The thrillseeker in your life will never see this one coming and it will definitely make someone flip out.
1. Riri by Rihanna. This fragrance is number one on our list because there is nothing more Bajan than Rihanna. We love her and her fragrances. The word on the street is that you can get this delightful scent from Cave Shepherd for under $150. Ladies, go ahead and treat yourself or a friend.
Next week we’re unveiling Bajan Connection’s Top Ten Events to ring in the New Year.

Time to Rally Round Radisson
Friday’s terrorist attacks in Bamako truly hit home to me how connected we are in the world. I have never met anyone from Mali, don’t know anyone who lives there but I instantly recognized the Radisson name, although admittedly I had never heard of Radisson Blu. I have an associate who works at Radisson Aquatica Resort here in Barbados so my thoughts immediately went to her, secretly hoping she was not affiliated with the employees of the hotel that was under seige on the other side of the world.
Although our hearts go out to the injured and those in mourning, there was a lot that went right with the response in this instance. The French troops stormed the building alongside the Malian troops. Hostages were released. Let me just say how impressed I am with the French officers and troops. They are so well trained. I remember those Chalie Hebdo attacks in France when the French forces caught the bad guys so quickly.
Normally I would not feel that Barbados could be strongly affected by acts of terrorism on another continent so far away but it felt like this one hit home. Right now you might still be wondering how this affects Barbados, thousands of miles away but this hits closer to home than you could imagine. Now, I’m no consipracy theorist. I was never one to start spreading doom and gloom. Rather, let’s be practical here and analyse the situation logically.
Fear factor
One of the greatest deciding factors for persons choosing to take a holiday or do business is safety. If they feel that their safety or security will be compromised in any way, they will go somewhere else. After the harrowing accounts of the terrorist attack on Radisson Blu, I imagine that there may be several cancellations of current bookings from visitors planning a holiday in Mali as a result of fear. Apparently, many diplomats and officials stayed there. On this occasion there were planned peace talks which made some factions angry and they decided to storm the place with AK-47s, shooting folks at random. People actually died, but the majority were evacuated by the skilled and highly trained French and Malian armed forces.
I expect that there could be solidarity worldwide for the Radisson family. Some persons who had not considered travelling to Mali before may now want to travel there in spite of the attacks, all in the spirit of fighting for freedom. Here Radisson, you and your staff have gone through a harrowing experience, so take my money and wrap yourself in it like a security blanket. Still, others may decide to stay at another Radisson hotel instead like the one here in Barbados due to our country’s lack of involvement in terrorism. It would be naive of us to think that this could not benefit our tourism industry.
Hearing reports of terrorists leaving Trinidad to go to fight in Syria and elsewhere is an unsettling thought and yet, we can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief that they’re not destroying Trinidad or hopping over here to Barbados. Technically, it would be pointless for terrorists to come here because on a mere 166 square miles, there is no place to actually hide and no opportunity for escape. There are benefits to being tiny after all.

Ten Reasons Why You Should Be Using Internet Radio
Tumblr media
Here’s the thing. The Internet is everywhere. People can reach the furthest corners of the earth with just one click. So why wouldn’t they? Virtually travelling the world through photographs and reviews on thousands of websites and blogs is a vital form of escape for millions out there. It’s the fastest and cheapest way to live the dream until you can afford it and get the time off from work. Since the advent of Pandora and Sirius, Internet radio has become a premiere choice for the world’s listening pleasure. Having a live, captive audience from around the world is a mouthwatering prospect. If you own a business, you should probably be using internet radio. Here are ten reasons why:
1. Tap Into New Markets The number one reason for being on internet radio is to tap into new foreign markets that your competitors may not have yet considered. In other words, it helps you to stay ahead of the game. In business you have to do what others are too scared to do. Most companies don’t leverage the Internet as much as they should because half of them are not willing to do the research.
2. Boost Your Social Media Campaign Being featured on internet radio should become a part of your internet marketing because that level of exposure can be used to boost your current efforts on all your social media channels.
3. Podcasts are great. Going Live is better.
Podcasts have risen in popularity, especially the ones that are hilarious. The problem with that is that you have to wait for someone to check out your archives, to find the topic or date of that specific broadcast. With a Live broadcast online, you can get instant feedback and answer questions on the spot. Heck, you could even take orders or bookings.
4. Competitive Advertising Rates  Companies can get pretty sweet deals including lower rates for online radio ads. Seasonal rates may vary but it is far more cost-effective than traditional radio so it’s a far greater value for money spent.
5. It’s So Nice You Can Do It Twice Internet radio offers the ability to have at least one repeat of a Live show for those who missed it. With traditional radio, if you missed it tough cookies.
 6. Knowledge is Power The idea of the language barrier stops most companies from considering foreign speaking markets. Meanwhile, the fact is that if you broadcast in English it increases your chances of attracting foreign speaking markets because English is often their second language. Brazil has a population of 18 million people. Who wouldn’t want a piece of that pie? China just signed a tourism deal with Barbados, so shouldn’t Barbadian businesses be reaching out to the Chinese? Seems like a no-brainer. If you can get these people telling their friends about you (in their language) doesn’t that just make sense?
7. Capture a New Demographic The fact is that if you stick to one demographic you could be losing out. Nobody wants to watch their business bleed out money. Keep the money from falling out by expanding the type of persons you reach out to. Take another look at the disabled, veterans and senior citizens. Many of these persons are more tech savvy than you might think. They often fall into the category of the forgotten and ignored when it comes to marketing. That spells untapped buying power. They have more free time and money to spend on whatsoever they please and yes, they enjoy listening to internet radio.
8. Stuck On You With Internet radio, there’s no channel to change. Many online stations run playlists non-stop, with shows at special times. Listeners can hook up their wireless speakers and tune in. Through the Tune-In app, they can even tune in on their mobile phones.
9. Build Customer Loyalty Internet radio stations build faithful fans that tune in every day for new music, jokes, helpful tips and relevant information. These sites can run in the background all day so that even after your business is featured, the host can remind listeners of your product or service. Remember last week when we talked about...
10. Brand Your Business as Innovative Proper brand building must include some measure of innovation and internet radio serves that purpose. If you’re not innovating, you’re stagnating and it stinks. You can use internet radio to push your business into the spotlight as being on the forefront of technology. When potential customers see this, they will want to know more about what your business can do for them, how you can meet their ever-changing needs.
Online marketing is so much more than Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so don’t limit your business in just using these platforms. Try blogging, actually use the Internet, get out there! The virtual world is your oyster.

Small Beginnings
Never be afraid of starting small. More dreams have died from not starting than becoming an epic failure. The other day a friend saw a photo I don’t even remember posting on Facebook and he asked “What is that?” To my horror, it was by far the worst attempt I had ever made in the kitchen. You have to understand his confusion because, truthfully, it was unrecognizable. It was supposed to be my first batch of brownies (more like burnies), but was more like a solid sheet of rock cake masquerading as a huge (and very dry) biscuit. At first I was tempted to be embarrassed but I was so proud of my lack of shame and utter fearlessness toward failing at something, I chuckled.
I run an online radio show called Bajan Connection on epocradio.com. We started with a handful of listeners and me, a complete unknown in internet radio and traditional radio circles. My goal was and my passion is to take Barbados to the world. I remember getting my first fan, who still listens to this day. Since then, this show has afforded me the opportunity to rub shoulders with dignitaries, interview celebrities like Boris Kodjoe (aka hashtag king), and work with legends like David Davis and Anthony “Blood” Armstrong, who believed in me when I was still getting my sea legs. Still, the most rewarding part was being able to meet and honour so many talented Bajans across various industries.
The Map That Changed Everything
Tumblr media
My plan was to reach out to Bajans overseas and teach the rest of the world about Bajan life, giving them a taste of what Barbados is really like, not just an ad on TV that’s just beyond your imagination. A handful of listeners snowballed into so much more. Bajans overseas started asking about the companies my co-host and I talked about on the show and one morning after the show my producer gives me the news that we were heard all the way in China. I almost fell out of my seat. Then there was the map. On one pretty ordinary day my producer emails me a map showing the continents listening in to the show even though we have not advertised. Our secret sauce was organic and folks couldn’t get enough of it. Starting small doesn’t mean staying small.
The journey to anywhere starts with the first step. Imagine teaching a baby to walk. We happily cheer on the baby, watching the many falls and flops but best of all, we celebrate that first step. Where along the way do we stop celebrating our own personal firsts? Do we think ourselves less worthy of celebration than an innocent child? Think again.
Success is a journey, not a destination so no part of the process should be taken for granted. If you don’t take the time to acknowledge your own accomplishments, I guarantee no one else will. If you want folks to support you in business and in life, you can’t shy away from the spotlight. Gain as much exposure for your passion, product or business as you can. You will be surprised at how many people believe in your product or service simply because they believe in you. As a result, some folks may call you arrogant, self-centred or narcissistic but who cares? Unless these persons are paying one or all of your bills, they can have many seats in the peanut gallery of life, as they watch you achieve your goals

Astronaut Lands in Barbados
I never for a second thought I would ever see an astronaut in real life, let alone hear one speak to a live audience about his job but that is exactly what happened. The US Embassy Bridgetown welcomed Captain Robert Curbeam at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Friday, October 16th for his talk STEM: The Final Frontier.
Retired astronaut Robert Curbeam made his way onto the stage, looking sharp in a three-piece suit. He’s African-American and although I had never met this man, I could not fight back an involuntary sense of pride. It’s not because he’s black but because he represents what our children can achieve.
In fact, Captain Curbeam’s first order of business was to present the prizes for the US Embassy’s essay competition “What If There Were No NASA?” The second runner up was Alma Parris, the first runner up was Ellerslie Secondary and the winner was Daryl Jordan Secondary.
The noted astronaut stated that out of a field of 410,000 engineers who graduate in the US each year, 80% of those graduates are foreign nationals so I could not help but hope that those same students who were awarded prizes could become part of that number.
The first thing Captain Curbeam did was ask us about our day. After listing a few seemingly mundane tasks, he said, “You’re welcome.” While we might not think about NASA while we’re brushing our teeth each morning, Captain Curbeam quite rightly pointed out something I had always taken for granted. He noted, “We discover new things; we discover new ways to use old things,” adding that astronauts, engineers and other STEM-educated professionals “are the single most influential group in the world that impacts on everyday life.”
He describes himself as “the tip of the spear”, adding “It’s not the point of the spear that makes it effective but the weight of the shaft.” Deep, Captain Curbeam.
So what is a trip into space like? After being stuck in quarantine for seven days, the astronauts get strapped into this rocket that hits them with seven and a half million pounds of thrust. He said it feels like you’ve been rear-ended by an 18-wheeler (something he knows a little bit about). Apparently astronauts are tough.
Describing a standard flight, he said after six minutes you’re sitting upright, and soon everything is floating. They coast over 200 miles over earth’s surface. Then they check the heat shield. At that moment, you can almost picture yourself on “The Bridge” with Captain Picard and Data.
Captain Curbean, who holds the record for the most spacewalks in a single mission, revealed a few unexpected sneak peeks into life at zero gravity. Inside a spacecraft that looks like an overgrown closet, you’ve got upside-down exercising, bad hair days (ladies, don’t even think a brush can fix this mess), floating food and cordless drills that work at both 200 degrees Farenheit and minus 100 degrees F. Can you say extreme temperatures?
On one of his missions some guy from Alaska co-ordinated the rewiring of the space station from its temporary power source to a permanent one. Unplanned maintenance included repairing a solar array that got stuck. It needed to fold in the right direction so it could close correctly and the job took just 7.5 hours. Step aside McGyver. The solar array cost a few hundred million dollars and it would have taken forever to build a new one if they had not been succesful.
Some reasons why Space is awesome:
1. Frisbees
2. A game called “Spin Your Buddy”
3. You can play with your food.
4. You can feed a friend.
5. You can go in your pants. (Toddlers everywhere scream in delight)
Fun Facts
Did you know that the average spacesuit with backpack weighs 360lbs?
Did you know that Outer Space affects your bones? It starts to leech calcium out of your bones by day 10 and reduces bone density.
There’s an apparent measure of torture called Interview Week. The actual interview is one hour. The physical lasts for 5 days! If you’re wondering how many people manage to survive, a mere 19 guys and gals are picked out of 3000 applicants.
That’s great and all but one of my biggest takeaways from Captain Robert Curbeam’s presentation was the fact that astronauts wear, get this, Space Diapers. Lol. I kid. He said something that will stay with me forever. “I wasn’t the smartest kid in my school but I worked harder than the rest of them.” Wise words to live by.
Captain Robert Curbeam impressed me on so many levels but most of all as a human being. In all the life he has lived and out of all the things he has seen, his home, our home Earth is still the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. He said that seeing Earth from space is more spectacular than we could imagine and that photos just don’t do it justice. Home sweet Earth. She is our life-sustaining planet. Let’s all love, cherish and take care of her.

Marc Gibson Builds New Bridge
I walk over to a seemingly unassuming chap. In glasses and rocking long-ish locs, Marc Gibson looks a bit like a taller version of Waldo but with better fashion sense. His quiet smile greets me as I’m already brimming with excitement to meet this young author who may have just changed the face of Barbadian literature forever.
Marc explains that Bridgeland is a two-part self-published graphic novel best described as a suspense-drama which he started writing ten years ago. It was meant to be his first film but was adapted to a graphic novel. Volumes One and Two were borne out of the practicality of publishing and were coloured by the Herculean task of finding an illustrator on the island. In this tale filled with twists and turns, two underprivileged youngsters hatch a half-baked plan to break into a rich man’s house but the plan ends in tragedy.
Readers and movie enthusiasts alike will be pleased to find that Marc pays great attention to character development. Casting aside any notions of cookie-cutter or cartoonish people populating the storyline, Marc set about creating characters that are 3-dimensional, blurring the lines between good and evil. Throughout the novel Marc asks, “How far would you go for family?”
Bridgeland launched on July 1st, 2015 and beyond his highest expectations, Marc says the first print run of the book sold out that month. One person who purchased the book was Sen. Delisle Worrell, Governor of the Central Bank no less, who offered Marc praise on his labour of love. Spoiler alert! Graphic novels aren’t just for kids. Calm down.
Yet another public figure in the form of best-selling author Eric Jerome Dickey also expressed his appreciation for Bridgeland, calling it “a pageturner”. While some might have been floating on air with a swollen head at that thought, Marc is still floored by it but remains humble and down-to-earth.
Featured on Bajan Connection in a two-part series on our Flipped Open segment, Marc says that he is open to local corporate sponsorship. Bajan Connection is all for Corporate Barbados supporting local talent but in his case that talent comes with an expertly packaged brand and a vision that is larger than life.
Barbadians are so accustomed to the run-of-the-mill academic text, intellectual literary works with pages upon pages of the usual blah blah-ing, we seem to forget that reading is supposed to be fun. Whenever people think of Barbadian literature, the graphic novel is not the first thing that comes to mind but why not? Have we pidgeon-holed ourselves in the notion that only traditional types of local written works should see the light of day?
How would I describe Bridgeland in a word? Unputdownable. It left me begging for more. Check out the rest of our interview below. Need a copy of Bridgeland in your life? Cop that here and click here to tell Marc what you think.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and where you grew up in Barbados. A bit about myself? I like to use ellipses... And I despise talking about myself. Also, I'm odd/strange/weird. Who knew? Where did I grow up? You do know these are two separate enquires, right? I grew up in Silver Hill, Christ Church; Black Road, St. Michael (not the mental [re: psychiatric hospital], but close enough), Lowlands, Christ Church... If it weren't for bills, I won't be sure how much growing up I actually did. Height though, is probably a poor measure.
2. What was your childhood like here? Childhood was rocky. It was hard struggling to reach treats on high shelves and other out-of-reach hideaways. And school... ugh, I could not stand school.
3. What did you always want to be when you grew up? What did you dream of most? I had no idea back then. There were interests, passing fancies. Didn't actually figure out "what I wanted to be when I grew up" until 2000. I dreamt of driving my enemies before and hearing the lamentation of their women. Still do, some nights... sigh
4. What Secondary School did you attend? Combermere School. But don't tell anyone. (Mutant and Proud!)
5. Did you ever leave Barbados to live overseas and why? Every time I left Barbados somebody would put me on a plane a few days later and send me back. Made it quite hard to live anywhere else.
6. Who inspired you growing up in terms of who you most wanted to emulate? Optimus Prime. Travelling the globe. Turning into a truck. Never having to pay for gas. Well, diesel.
7. Who do you look up to now? Never the sun. Especially never the sun. I don't "look up to anybody". Bad for the neck usually. The closest would be Rihanna. She took an amazing opportunity and completely owned it. Also, have you seen her legs? Talk about stairway to heaven...
8. What has your experience been like as a writer in Barbados? Being a writer is hard. The two big questions are: "When are you going to get a real job?" and "How do you make money?" Sigh. People, just walk into Chattel House Books and pay for Bridgeland: Volume One, that's how I make money. I'm not cut out to be a stripper, I can't dance seductively and lack upper body strength. Speaking of money, people want you to work for chicken feed. And not even the high quality stuff either. Sometimes you take it, knowing that you're selling yourself short. Part of it might be to get your name out there. Part of it is that you have chickens to feed. But it's hard cause Bajans just don't read any more. I was at a signing recently and a woman was passing by so I put on my best smile and said, "Buy my book!" And her response was, "I don't read!" What! Seriously... And if they are reading, their first choice isn't something written by a Bajan. Unless they don't know it's written by a Bajan. Don't tell anybody I'm a Bajan. Tell them I'm a Martian. There are folks on this planet that think that the new Matt Damon flick is based on a real story. They'll believe that... Honestly, I'm proud to be a Barbadian. One of the things that motivates me as a storyteller is the belief that Barbados has fantastic stories to tell. Stories that at the very least are on par with anything, anywhere! I'm just interested in telling stories and making a comfortable living.
9. You just wrote the book, Bridgeland. Tell us about it. How did that come about? Tell you about Bridgeland? Wuff, that'll take ten years. Seriously, it took an entire decade to get Bridgeland to this point. Did you know it was a screenplay initially? No, Matt Damon didn't write it. geez. Again with these double barrel enquires! (I’m sadistic like that, what can I say?) How did it come about... well, once upon a time... Heh, the original idea for the story was about a young, small business owner battling for custody of his child with his evil hag of a recently exed-wife, not realising that the true evil was her rich, powerful parents. Basically because men in this country get dragged through the eddoes by the court system in this country that automatically sides with the female. But nobody wants to hear about that stuff, so I settled on home invasion kicks off decade-long quest for bloody revenge instead.
10. What has been the response to Bridgeland thus far? Nobody has said, "This is rubbish!" So that helps. Though you wouldn't imagine how hard it is to get a review! I have had two formal, typed-out-and-everything reviews so far. Both from colleagues, though it still feels a little world-spinny to call Eric Jerome Dickey a colleague. He's been rather groovy. Yes, I use the word groovy. The other is from an actor, educator and poet, Icil Phillips. I got to work with her on a movie a few years back. I also remember her from Combermere. She didn't teach me, but I used to think she was ultra strict, just from seeing her walking the halls. But Icil is a gem of a human and a joy to work with on set. I mention Icil not just because she is groovy too, but because her review of Bridgeland: Volume One allowed me to see this story I crafted from another perspective. Bridgeland through her eyes was a tale far more intricate and layered that I ever imagined. Don't get me wrong, I like my stories with a certain depth to them, and I did indeed write Bridgeland with multiple layers. However, much of the joy I experienced from reading her review, as well as Eric's, was seeing a reader pick up the connections I buried and take them further. To know that my story had a resonance in her life, her experience, her unique place in society as an individual, that adds meaning to me as a writer.
11. Does Marc have any hidden talents or superpowers we know nothing about? Do you know the show Heroes Reborn? Well, don't spread this around, but that's totally based on me... IKR, crazy!
12. What is the one place in the world you long to see someday and why? My hopes and dreams are not defined by terrestrial concerns...
13. Is there a special someone in your life? Oh yeah! My Little Monsoon, The Bringer of Rain, my Kitty... Erica D. Hinkson!
14. How do you feel about race and race relations in Barbados? I think that the only thing to truly unite the people of Earth would be alien invasion.
15. What's your favourite movie? I really liked Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
16. Who's your favourite superhero / comic character of all time. Batman. HAHAHAHA! I joke.
17. What's your favourite dish? Any one with pasta and fish in it.
18. What's your favourite dessert? Chocolate, cereal, peanut butter, ice cream. Just put that all in the same container, I'll take it to go.
19. What's the one thing you would change in this world if you could? I think that Barbadians deserve ZERO VAT on bacon. Vote Gibson, 2018!
20. What's next for Marc Gibson? Well after all these questions, a nap. I'm not as young as I was when I started this thing. Then I've got to see about getting Bridgeland: Volume Two out. The art on Volume Two is phenomenal! Also there's this webseries I'm working on called Strongarm. Somebody told me it reminds them of the best combination of Empire and Power. I've also got a memoir to write about a recent near-death experience. And no, I'm not being simply melodramatic. I honestly thought I would die, and that scared me past the point of tears. I'm also planning my next graphic novel(s). Urban/Contemporary Fantasy, and Sci-fi. Also, I'm going to kiss my girlfriend. Repeatedly.
