Wonder Rush
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #11: Word Pair Pt. 2
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
The final illustration experiment gave us a prompt more open than a field: our own choice! I took this opportunity to revisit our first prompt: Word Pair. I chose the words Wonder and Rush this time, and crafted a starship rushing past a looming planet and its moon. I used the blend tool a lot in this piece to create the gradients found both on the starship and the space rocks. The artwork represents a farewell to a class I really enjoyed. I hope to take a course like this one again down the line.
See you again soon!
(Did you notice the big dipper before it was mentioned just now?)

Lothiiran’s Stance
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #10: "People” Doing Things
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
People doing things. Illustration experiment 10 offered the class a chance to portray a huamnoid subject performing an action. I conjured Lothiiran, an occult shaman, drawing his glave in a defensive position. My own character model was used as a reference for this piece. Once again, comfortable colour blocking was used to convey the subject, and a unique art brush was utilized to represent the mud splattering across the artboard. Photoshop adjustments were made such as little posterization and contrast reduction to better suit the tone of the piece.
Lothiiran didn’t have much to say about the mess.

This Ain’t A Road . .
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #9: Raster
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
Illustration Experiment 9 asked the class to create a raster image as opposed to the traditional vector artwork or other experimental mediums some would choose. Photoshop is a powerful platform. I took the psychedelic route; dunking my personal truck into a bucket of neon colours before sending it on its way through a dimension of non-form. The background image used to be a lake scene before a monsoon of filters and external edits were applied.
What was in that gasoline?

Rourghun the Dazed
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #8: Something Otherworldly
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
Illustration Experiment number 8 had the class shoot for what could reside beyond the stars. I illustrated a texturally lined, dazed and confused extraterrestrial wearing a “stylish” branded T-shirt. The idea that there may be other humanoid life out there allows for some fun takes on a character’s design, like this piece’s subject, Rourghun, having a familiar silhouette with freakish features.

ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #7: Natural Landscape
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
Number seven of our Illustration Experiments gave us the prompt “Natural Landscapes.” I challenged yet rewarded myself with how I would create this piece. No borderlines to define shapes, but instead simple block colouring was utilized to represent every element thrown into the artwork. A mixture of different brush styles allowed the production of various textures and forms to collide into a cohesive snapshot of a coastal range. The primary focus of the assignment emphasized the landscape of the piece, but never said that we weren’t allowed to include subjects. My extra additions to the scenery was the fighter jet duo cruising low above the beach.

ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #6: Incorporate Inks
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
Finding a way to incorporate inks into our piece was the class’s 6th prompt for our illustration experiment. While I have little skill with physical ink, I am able to recreate the medium digitally, meaning I fell back into my comfy Adobe Illustrator beanbag. This illustration depicts an inky, messy yet defined box descending through the air as it exits a typhoon of swirls, trails and streams. The piece is meant to utilize various ink-like brushes to convey a chaotic, dramatic and eventful art piece. The geometric nature of the box’s frame provides a strong contrast against the otherworldly setting.

ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #5: Scale & Composition
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
Our class was tasked with the prompt Scale and Composition for the fifth Illustration Experiment. Until now, all of my pieces were created in Adobe Illustrator. This time I chose to use a physical medium - plastic. Riporagh, a  large, spindly criminal looms over a quadrupedal enforcement unit named Scavard. The background remains a stark white to allow the focus to narrow on the two subjects of varying sizes and composure. The two figures were photographed in different shots before being spliced together to form a single art piece.

GAREO
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #4: Texture
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
Our class’s fourth prompt for our Illustration Experiments was texture. Various implied textures were implemented into the subject - GAREO, a character I previously sketched but only now had the chance to digitalize. The element with the most focus was his jagged, rigid teeth, along with his stretched, cracked lips revealing his snarl. The stippling of his chin represents his shaven chin, harsh with angles and dark line work edges. GAREO’s hair is dark and glossy yet spiked and coarse. The card he holds is scratched beyond repair - riddled with deep cuts and grooves.
The spittle is extra. His manners aren’t the best.

Prime
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #3: Vector
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
The third illustration experiment had the class create a piece made only of vectors on Adobe Illustrator. I chose to create a vector rendition of an iconic and easily recognizable character - Optimus Prime. The sharp edges of his silhouette can be easily distinguished with the use of simple illustrator line work. Unfortunately the lines appear too slim for the display to handle, making many parts of the piece appear pixelated when they should be smooth and not nearly as distracting. Simple shading and block colouring was used to provide a mellow level of depth to the subject.

Complementary
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #2: Colour
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
The second Illo Experiment had the class tackle a ridiculously open and fun theme: colour. I chose to depict an arm, originally splattered in a pool of different colours and hues. Through simplified reduction one after the other, I settled on the blue and orange complementary colour scheme, allowing the arm to pop on the page. The black graphics tell a story of the arm’s owner coming out of a world of shame and despair; a world that only existed within their own mind, hence why only the smallest frame is filled in while the larger is empty. These elements added an extra level of depth, making the piece more interesting.

Visible Jaw
ARTG 241 Illo Experiments #1: Word-Pair
Auvie Meyer, VIU 2022
For the first illustration experiment, the class was asked to choose two words to use as their art piece's theme. I chose the words "visible" and "jaw" for my theme. The illustration represents my own self-consciousness about my jaw, which many others experience as well. Originally I intended on illustrating a visceral, snarling beast with a protruding,  tooth-filled jaw yelling in anger or anguish. Instead I swapped for a simple style to allow the fewer, more impactful elements to aid the artwork in conveying its emotional tone.
