I think what's even sadder is that Azula, at some level, is aware that Ozai doesn't love her.

It was Zuko who was the naïve one that needed to realise what their father actually was like. But Azula always knew.

She knows he doesn't love anyone. And she's okay with it—or rather, she tells herself she's okay with it. She probably saw their mum love Zuko and craved the same but she never received it—so she buries that desire deep inside. She considers love foolish because no one ever loved her—but her vulnerability around their mother tells us that she, again, knows that it's possible.

Her breakdown in the end comes about not because she realises Ozai doesn't love her. She always knew that and never asked for more because she's the perfect princess and the perfect daughter who doesn't ask for more than she is given.

But because even after she did everything right, it wasn't enough. She let her person hood erode away chasing perfection. She did what was required of her even after her bestfriends betrayed her and she was very clearly hurt—she tried to bury it and push forward.

She knew the moment she falls short of expectation she would be cast aside like Zuko was. And she considers it his fault, not their father's. (Zuko goes even a step forward in this nasty direction that he blames his fate on Azula and not their father).

Except, she was cast aside the moment she served her purpose, even though she did it excellently.

Even after all that it wasn't enough. The “You can't treat me like Zuko” says it all. She spent all her life not being like him. She went above and beyond. She did everything that was humanly possible and maybe even little more than that. And yet, in the end, it didn't matter.

That's so sweet though. Mai's set for life, she doesn't even have lift a finger. I've always been little spoon Zuko truther but Mai is grumpy enough that her being the little spoon is also very adorable. 🥰

And we know Zuko would absolutely do that because he's the kind of person to do things for his girlfriend. “If you could have anything right now what would it be?” and “Do you think you could find a fruit tart for the lady?” he'll definitely fuss over her too when she's on her periods. Mai would roll her eyes and not complain because he's cute. And I have a feeling she'd like being pampered.
