Hey, Tina! It's good to see you! You know, those are actually pretty great suggestions. I haven't played organized sports in light years, but it would be fun to get back out there, even if it's only for a couple weeks. Dayton or Columbus could be nice, yeah. I'll take a look and see if there's anything happening. How has your summer been so far? Summer school has been...A wild ride. I love my job, but trying to convince these kids to focus during the year is bad enough. Doing it in summer school? Darn near impossible.
askfuturedavekarofsky:
You know, it just really dawned on me how close summer school is to being over. This time next week my albeit shortened summer vacation will have officially begun…And I don’t have a single plan. Lima hasn’t ever been the most thrilling place, but if anyone has any suggestions I would be open to them..

Hey Dave!
How is summer school going? Good I hope. As for ideas around Lima... the rec department usually runs different teams in the spring/summer. It might be a little late but you might still be able to fill in on a team if you wanted. If you're an animal person, I know the SPCA often needs people to come in during the summer while people are on vacation and have made changes to their volunteer commitments. But also, get out of Lima, even if for the day. Dayton, Columbus, both have more to offer. Hope that helps.

Hey, Mike. Those are some great suggestions, I appreciate those. I'll build on that and see if there are any events happening in the surrounding towns. I wouldn't mind going out of town, really, I haven't been in quite a while. But, I don't know if now is the best time sadly. Hopefully soon. It would be nice to get out of town for a little bit, I can't remember the last time I had a legit vacation.

Do you want to stay in Lima? I mean it's summer vacation. Why not take a road trip? There are a couple of day trips that you could do, or some longer ones where you might need to pack a bag for a couple of days. You could just drive and see where it takes you, or pick somewhere specific. Chicago is not that far and I can recommend all kinds of things there. Cleveland has the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Take in a sporting event of some kind. Visit a local zoo... some of the animals are so adorable. Find an amusement park, check out any fairs or summer concerts....

Hey, Blaine! It's good to hear from you. I know what you mean, it's not the same as in-person, but social media at least helps to bridge a little bit of that gap. Things are going alright, how are things your way? I've thought about it a couple of times, yeah, but I don't think it's something I can make happen right now. I've got...Some things to take care of here. But...Maybe one day. It would be nice to see everyone again. Overall I've been okay, what about you? How has your summer been so far?

The invitation to hang out with Brett had certainly been unexpected, but definitely not unwelcome. Despite how social Dave had been in his earlier years of high school the years hadn't been kind to his friend circle. Between working while in college full-time, then working full time, then working full time with the addition of coaching duties, and then with the declination of his mother's health...Unfortunately, when sacrifices had to be made, Dave was the first to volunteer himself. He couldn't say he wasn't nervous, that would have been a lie. It wasn't as though he didn't know Brett at least on a base level. They had attended high school together for some time, and had been teaching at McKinley together for the better part of four years. Still, the hangout was the first time they'd see each other in this capacity. Having already tripped over his own words, Dave only hoped he wouldn't fumble anything further.
Stepping trough the gate as directed, Dave took a deep breath and pasted a smile on his face. Seeing Brett, the smile widened. "Hey yourself. Thanks again for inviting me, you've saved me from a riveting evening of The Office reruns. How are you? How was your day?"
After sending his last message to Dave, Brett got up and made his way into his kitchen to grab some snacks. He had plenty of options, so he grabbed a few things that would be easy to eat outside and pulled out his cooler. He put ice and some drinks inside, then headed back out into his backyard. Because he was already out there before, he already had a table out there with a speaker for music, a laptop for movies, and a small tray with a box for all of his smokeables and edibles. The food was placed on the table too, within reach of the hammock. The drinks were scooted beneath the table in the cooler with the opening for the lid within reach too.
When the side gate opened and Dave came in like he'd been told that he could, Brett turned to face the other man with a grin. "Hey there, stranger. Come on over, you're just in time."

I will, but I appreciate the sentiment. I'll try though. I...I wouldn't say no, if that's what you're offering. I can't promise I won't be completely stupid, but it would be nice...To let go again. I think. I can pay, if you want. I wouldn't want to be a mooch. Okay, sounds good. I'd still like to bring a few things with me, to take some of the pressure off. You're already hosting and offering a good little break, it would be rude to expect you to do everything. That's an interesting approach, but you aren't wrong. Yeah? It'll be good to see you, too. Outside of work. In general. Yeah. Okay, I'll head that way then. So...I'll see you soon, Brett.
You're alright, don't worry about it. You wanna change that? They don't call me Stoner Brett for nothing, champ. Deal. Anything you want, whatever. I've got snacks and drinks and stuff, and the hammock. Whenever is fine, time is an illusion I don't mind. I've got nothing else in mind, I'll be here either way. Just come on down, it'll be good to see you. I'm in the back yard, I'll go sit on the front porch.

Yeah, no, I know that...I- Wow, I'm awkward. Sorry about that. I've apparently spent too much time talking only with teenagers. That's astute, but I agree. That's incredible, Brett. And really great to know. That's....That sounds like it would be an interesting experience. God, I haven't smoked since I was like...18? 19 maybe? Deal. It's a deal, then. Should I bring anything? That's interesting. I don't think I'd know what to do if I didn't plan. Oh, I'm going to see my mom, but other than that I don't have anything going on. If you wanted me to come over for the video and the hammock, I could. If that's not too soon.
...Yeah. I realize it's not the best thing ever. But, by the time I hit 30 it was kind of solidified as a personality trait, so... No, there's nothing wrong with that. I just wasn't- I didn't mean- I didn't just want to insert myself. If that wasn't...What you meant. And it isn't like I get tons of offers to join people in hammocks. Oh, right. That...Makes sense. My mom says the same thing. That makes sense, with you being the art teacher. It's god to know you can still keep your passion for yourself. I'm glad I don't teach English, so I don't have to worry about not reading what I'm teaching. Wow, that sounds insane and incredible. I'd like to see that, actually. Do you have any bg plans for the rest of the summer?

I can give that a shot, but here's a secret for you- it's kind of my default to worry about pretty much everyone. So, I can't make promises on how successful I'll be. I'm glad it was! I- Join you? In the hammock? You- that's...Quite an offer. Does it? I must have given the wrong impression entirely. Thanks for letting me know. Fun? Uh. Well, I read, when I can. What do you do for fun? Other than falling asleep in hammocks, I mean.

Man, that's tough. It's one of those things that people know, but don't really think about. The fact that doctors and other medical professionals are forced to work those kinds of schedules for the benefit and safety of others. I know it has to be really hard, but know that it's appreciated. I'll keep my fingers crossed you catch a break soon.
Sheesh. Tell me you at least got some sleep after?
askfuturedavekarofsky:
Hey, Mike! It sounds like you’ve already got the best plans set and ready to go! It’s funny, it doesn’t feel like so long ago that that very same activity sounded like ‘Snoozeville’, but these days it sounds like absolute Heaven. As far as recommendations for that kind of thing go, I’ve always been partial to shows like ‘The Office’ or 'Parks and Rec’, but that’s just me. On the topic of my plans…Huh. Really, I don’t think I have any other than a beer and some grading.
So, is it safe to assume you’ve had a long day?
I don’t know man, I think I missed out a little because since moving to NYC for med school, this has pretty much been my go to. Neither med school or my residency has left a lot of room for exploring the city and living it up except for the few dedicated times I’ve had vacation or holiday time and didn’t end up back in Ohio with my family.
Maybe I’ll go back to Parks and Rec, although I am looking for something I haven’t seen. Unpopular opinion– I am not a fan of The Office. There is one actor I really don’t enjoy and it unfortunately soured the whole show for me.
You know, for the moaning we did about homework in high school, and even after it’s only been in the last few years, that I made the connection that student homework often meant teacher homework after the fact. Good luck with the grading. Hopefully you don’t have too much of it.
When I was able to leave I was on hour 32. An all hands emergency lead to basically two shifts running together. The joys I guess of a work that has no set schedule and is open 24 hours a day.

You can say that again. Sebastian Smythe, as charming as ever. I've been okay, thanks for asking. How about you, though? Despite what I said, that status has some holes. The expert dodging of topics like rest and relaxing makes those holes bigger. I'm just saying. Don't worry about you? Sure, Jan. I know that feeling, too. I don't even want to imagine what your caseload looks like right now. Me? Same old, same old. You know how it is, and you know how it is where i am.
Ugh, that sucks. I know that feeling though, so relish the fact that you aren't alone. I hope you've been able to rest and get some relaxation in. Other than working, what have you been up to? It feels like it has been forever, even if it hasn't. Adulthood does that to you, I think.

I have to admit, the first line of that was a bit startling, but by the end it wasn't nearly as bad. It seems like you had a good night then. I'm not sure I could sleep in a hammock, but then again I've never tried. Anyway...I'm not up to much. Grading and prep, prep and grading. At least summer school is nearly over, right?

I fell asleep outside last night, trippy. In my defense, I have one hell of a comfy hammock and the weather was like super nice. Just the right amount of heat, no humidity, totally chill. What's everyone else up to?

I’m really hoping to get out of here tonight as close to on time as possible and looking forward to grabbing some of my favorite take out on my way home to veg in front of the tv and watch something that is entertaining, but requires no thought. I welcome all recommendations on that front, and well, tell me what your plans are tonight.

Who doesn't love a long day that keeps you at the office until after 9pm-- and then you still end up taking work home with you afterwards. Don't ever let anyone convince you that nepo babies don't work hard.
