How do story based askblogs work?

A story-based askblog is any askblog that follows a continuous storyline.

A non-story askblog likely will involve little to no continuity between responses, or any continuity between responses is largely unimportant. In a non-story askblog, characters may exist in a nebulous timeframe (such as "post-canon"), or a very specific unchanging timeframe such as a specific part of their canon timeline. Muses/Characters on the askblog will remain largely unchanged throughout the duration of the askblog.

In a story-based askblog, there is an overarching storyline/narrative that is being followed/that the characters are participating in while questions are being answered. This storyline/narrative may be referenced when muses/characters are answering questions. The continuity/narrative of the askblog may be driven by asks, or may impact how asks are responded to. For example, the askblog may have multiple parts of a singular timeline it jumps between, and characters will respond differently depending on what part of the timeline they are in. Previous asks may influence a character's reactions to future asks. Stories may be planned out in advance by the Mun/Admin and partially influenced by asks (such as encouraging characters to investigate presented options), or entirely driven by the audience. Each ask is functionally an indication of time passing.

Some examples of story-based askblogs across some different fandoms include @deadangelos (Riordanverse), @ask-spiderpool (Marvel), @infinityroom (Hermitcraft), @wireman-au (also Hermitcraft), and @if-youmustblink (Kubo & The Two Strings).

Some examples of non-story askblogs include @sportaflopnrobbie (Lazytown), @mer-turtlez (TMNT), and @pranksterhowl (Pokemon). Cosplay askblogs are also very often non-story askblogs.

Hello! This is Askblog Index - a blog dedicated to indexing askblogs across tumblr, in any fandom and any askblog form, to try and catalogue this endangered species of blog and make it a bit easier to find askblogs.

Hey, you! Yes, you! You should make an askblog!

“What’s a tumblr askblog?” You may ask (ba-dum-tss). Well, it’s a tumblr blog format where you (or your and your friends!) have a character or group of characters the blog focuses on, and people can ask questions for the characters to respond to. There’s a wide variety of askblog formats to choose from too - illustrated (drawing the characters responding) or text (usually chat post format - just writing dialogue of the characters replying) are the most common, but there’s also voice acting askblogs, cosplay askblogs, and more! Anything you can think of! You can even combine formats if you feel like it! Get funky with it!

Askblogs used to be really popular and common on tumblr, but there are very few active ones anymore. It’s a really fun and interesting format of storytelling that’s difficult to find anywhere but tumblr! And it’s entirely interactive - so even if you don’t want to make an askblog, it can be a lot of fun to interact with ones other people have made! Either way, it’s an absolute blast!

So let this be your sign - make an askblog! (Or, check out some askblogs and maybe send them an anon!) And hey, if you do make one, tell us about it!
