𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐊 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐌𝐄𝐒, who absolutely despised balls— Lord above, who came up with the concept? He was fine with the dancing, all that was uniform, neat, but it was the shamelessly pathetic courting. Women flapping their fans for the passing men whether they were or weren’t lookers. Money was the goal, social security made their name.

It was all so repulsive. But that wasn’t why he was here, no.

Making his way through the crowds of bachelorettes waving their fans at him and batting overdone eyelashes and whispering men trying to find out why he was here — unannounced at a baron’s ball — he found Baron Drossmeyer’s study and slipped in quietly, shutting the door behind him and spinning around with a huff of breath.

The case of the Surrey Slasher was an almost infuriating one, as the span of kills was rather extensive across the areas of London and partially beyond, but he’d finally tracked everything to the baron. His study could have some clues—

Oh. He wasn’t bargaining on company.

Sherlock couldn’t help but feel intrigued at seeing you, a woman without a chaperone, sitting there behind the baron’s desk perusing a particularly heavy novel as if it were a piece of light reading. How… interesting. “Madam.”

“You shouldn’t be here.” Your voice rang clear, and he instinctively began to deduce who you could be. A gown that at least seemed more exquisite than the rushed ones of the other ladies, a rather pleasant colour that complimented you. You were confident, sure of yourself, judging by how you spoke out, and you certainly didn’t care about societal normalities if there was no chaperone present.

He had an inkling that he’d found a kindred spirit, of sorts.

Sherlock’s laugh bubbled in his chest— not many talked to him like that, it was… good. This was intriguing, there was no mistaking the way you carried yourself. You were educated.

“I could ask you the same thing,” He hummed, moving further into the room. He didn’t know why, but to be this close to intelligence amongst all of this fakeness was refreshing; the men and women out there seemed like shallow husks of what they really were, even the host, who he’d spoke with earlier. It was no use speaking to empty vessels, which lead him to you.

He could tell you weren’t a part of this.

“Well, I was invited. By pure privilege, but let’s ignore that.” You smiled, glancing to him, plucking a book from the shelf and perusing it on your way to the desk. “So, Mr Holmes, it is an honour to finally meet you.”

Pure privilege. He found himself smiling back at your words, though it was a very small one.

Sherlock raised an eyebrow, slightly amused, wondering if you were being sincere in saying it was an honour to meet him. Most people gushed over him, the women especially— though, most of the time, they didn’t mean it, it was simply for status. Then there were those who truly wanted to know him and this intrigued him.

“It is?” He asked, leaning against the desk and looking down at you.

“Well, yes, you’re one of the greatest detectives known to man, it’d be foolish not to want to meet you.” You said matter of factly, looking up at him with clever eyes, gesturing vaguely to him. “You’re intelligent, have solved countless notorious cases and you’re inherently interesting.”

Well. That was even more intriguing, as he’d never anticipated anyone to be interested in anything past his fame. You were a rare gem, and one he felt privileged to discover. He quirked an eyebrow, stepping to you, not condescending, feeling more like an equal. You meddled with his mind, he had to admit. “It appears I’m at a disadvantage, madam. You know my name, yet I don’t know yours.”

You introduced him with your name, and he swore he’d heard it somewhere before, but now wasn’t the time. “I assume you’re here to investigate the Surrey Slasher.” His voice was quiet, respectful. You understood the thrills of the game. The chase.

“That’s right."

"Tell me what you know." The game was afoot.

𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐃, who loved having a special language with you that no one else could understand. Not that he was happy about you being deaf, but it made you optimistic like him, happy like him, always signing to him with a cute smile that gave him butterflies— god, he was so gone for you. So very gone.

He sat in front of you, looking excited as hell, and just like a radar, you picked up on it and became jittery like him too. He loved that too, how you mirrored his own expression or body language in a second. “There’s a new five hour Russian movie showing.” He signed with a grin— he wasn’t being inconsiderate about you being deaf, you were an incredible lip reader, having been reading them like 200,000 words books your whole life. “Do you wanna go?”

“As if I wouldn’t,” you signed back, making his eyes light up in barely concealed excitement— you found it adorable, how he’d perk up the moment someone entertained his interests, but you loved the little quirks that made Spencer… Spencer.

Oh, who were you kidding? You had a massive crush on him.

“Great! So, I’ll pick you up tomorrow, six-ish?” The signed sentence nearly made you swoon, as Spencer would be picking you up from your house, and in that time he’d scurried off with a red face to where Derek and Hotch were.

“Well, would’ya look at that.” Derek grinned, arms folded over his chest. “Pretty. Boy. You scored a date with the other resident BAU baby, my man.” Hotch — as usual — looked stoic, but the corner of his mouth looked slightly upturned. Rossi looked on from his place talking to JJ interestedly, damn, the kid’s got game.

Spencer shook his head, flushing even more. “No! It’s— no, it’s not a date. It’s friendly, that’s all.”

“I’ll pick you up tomorrow, six-ish.” He quoted with a smirk and tilt of his head, feeling like Professor X, but hotter. “Sorry, my dude, that’s a date. Look, play it cool, that’s all I’m gonna say.”

Hotch waited for Derek to get bored with the teasing and step away to talk to Emily, then lightly tapped Spencer’s arm and spoke in his ear with an amused, proud smile. Why hadn’t either of you seen it sooner? “Personally, I don’t think you need to do anything to win her over.”

Spencer’s eyes darted to where you were rapidly scribbling down the details of the date for Rossi and JJ with a giggle spilling from your lips and an excited flush on your cheeks. Maybe Hotch was right after all, huh?

He was. You felt like you could twirl your hair and kick your feet about now.

𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐄𝐍, who got out of the car with nothing but childhood, giddy optimism on his face as he jogged bow-legged to your side to open the door before you can. “Ma’am.” Such a gentleman, of course, and looking thirty years younger than he is with that broad grin. “O-Ok, just wait for it, darlin’, s’gonna blow your mind.” Practically sprinting to the trunk, he got a step stool for you and set it up on the side of his truck, helping you up.

“Beau, c’mon, what’re you doing?” You laughed as you climbed up onto the bonnet of his truck. This man was one big man baby, but he was your man baby, so you didn’t really mind.

He held out a hand, grunting as he also used the stool. “Nope. Right on the hood, sweetheart, keep goin’.” What is it with this man, huh? You had no clue what you were supposed to be doing, but you just climbed onto the hood of his truck anyway, feeling awfully high off the ground.

His truck’s fault for being a fucking monster.

“Honey, what are you—” You couldn’t help the bubble of laughter as he rolled his way onto the bonnet, beginning to practically bear crawl onto the hood, patting the side and muttering a “sorry, Pedro”. “Beau!”

He chuckled, the low sound mixing with your laughs as he took your hips and brought you to settle between his legs, pressing a kiss to your temple. “Now, I know I ain’t as much of a strappin’ lad as I used to be, but I can still take my girl for one of Helena’s finest treasures, look.” He’d taken your chin, guiding you to look at whatever he wanted you to see.

Holy… wow.

The sky started to light up orange and red and purple, as the sun had started disappearing over the horizon, colour bleeding out into the darkening blue. “Beau, this looks…”

“Beautiful, right?” He grinned, rubbing your stomach in circles with his palm, resting his chin on your shoulder. “Just like the gorgeous woman watchin’ it happen. “Helena’s—” a kiss to your cheek, “— number one —” another, “— treasure.” One to your lips.

“Sweet talker, sheriff.” You couldn’t help but snort, stealing a kiss from him again, making his chest rumble in low, imperceptible laughter, shoulders shaking during it.

He stroked your hair back, taking a good look at you and trying to memorise every detail of the sunset’s glow on your pretty skin. He was one lucky son of a bitch for having you. “You know it, darlin’.”
