Messing around with some extra studio time yesterday. This one was fun and a great experiment for an idea I’m hashing out. Some days (all the the time really) they don’t have to be perfect more than the fact that you’re doing the work. I know this as fact. Believe it or not sometimes I like to dial back and do simpler work. I recently went to see the Warhol exhibition and one of the things I appreciated about the work was the simplicity. I’m a working designer by trade so I liked the technical process that went into the work. It’s way more complicated than the work presents. The scale@alone presents its own challenge. With that in mind I challenged myself to do something similar. Simple subject related to pop culture, one color ink and 1 color background. Oh and make it huge as hell. For the record it was created at 60”x60” . After a couple of ideas lining a trash can this one made the cut. It’s simple but I think it still has impact. So here we go . New WIP. Up late in the wee hours last night with the insomnia running amok. I’ve been trying to work this one out in my mind and I finally got to work on it thanks to the extra studio time no sleep gave me last night. I’m quite pleased. Like the other constants that permeate my insomniac work these characters are also making their presence known more and more to me lately . When I finally figure out what they really represent I’ll be either shocked, awed or really disappointed. Maybe I’ll never know. But I’ll keep going. Wee hours studio time well spent. This took a different direction and I like where it’s going. I always have a vague idea of what will hit the canvas. Always just a concept mashup I’m toying with. I know some artists are super planners. Every detail. I am not. I roll with the flow of what’s trying to vent from my mind at the moment. Not always brilliant stuff but I stick it out and the work comes around. After a few reworks it’s either a save or a go. Case in point. I had painted this and was really going to scrap it it . I had given it a fair shot and this last attempt was literally its last attempt. But the right idea hit and as fate had it I had acquired new supplies from the art addiction store. So now we’ll keep going and I will share when she’s finished. This tiny work is for the upcoming small works event I’m gearing up for. Ahhh....another small print getting detailed. I love the details. It’s the tiny bit of attention that gives these just the proper nudge. Quality time spent in the studio today putting finishing touches on a few pieces headed off for exhibition. This one is a small sized work but I feel it’s impactful. It will follow you around a room. Sometimes I feel a work doesn’t need to be large to deliver a message and connect with its viewers. It’s like life, pay attention to the small things and you will be amazed at what you find. Frida Fest was in full swing today with live dancing ,music and art. It kicked off a year long celebration of Frida Kahlo leading up to the Frida Kahlo exhibit in 2020. Enjoyed seeing the work of Jose Guadalupe Posada at the Cleve Carney Art Gallery in Glen Ellyn before it’s gone too. Dropped this new piece off today at the Elmhurst Art Museum guild gallery for their fall show. Opening reception is this Friday the 13th from 7-9. The show is up for viewing thru October 11th. I must say love putting my work in a gallery setting whenever I get a chance. The serenity of a quiet gallery space mixed with the colors and the lights is always peaceful for me . It’s something I’d like to do more so maybe that’s a goal to work harder on. Absolute fun. Every time I see this work. Digging back into the studio rebuild today many discoveries were made and buried in my super mega inventory stash was this gem. Upon seeing it I instantly recall the fun it was to make this. It was carefree creation. With some rebelliousness thrown in. I had a blast experimenting with different media mixed together to visualize the chaotic whimsy in my mind. As they say nailed it . Then I remember it was exhibited once. Why? It was accepted to a gallery show and received very poor reception. I used to think critics and judges must now good art vs bad art. I believed them. So away it went . Fast forward to today and I wouldn’t make that mistake again. I figured it out. This work would find its right audience and find its forever home. That I believe. Love it or hate it is up to the beholder. So enjoy. So in the wee hours of spare time I’ve got, I’ve been working at this. I’ve been posting the found hordes of watercolors but today I will post something more current. The departure back to today is a reminder of growth, development and personal expression in my work. Although I do love the bright and happy, it had its place. My current work is more real to what life has shown me personally . It’s not pretty but still beautiful. It shows perseverance. I feel it shows honesty and vulnerability. It shows that there is beauty everywhere but you have to change your perceptions to see it. Maybe you see it. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you just see more garbage work. That’s ok. It’s all good. That’s what art is all about. Reaching you whether good or bad popular or not. It evoked something in you. So enjoy. Judge it. Hate it. Love it. I’m cool with it. So here’s another watercolor, be it a different kind of watercolor. This would be one of the few I did in this series that had a subject. This particular work had outside influences at play to manifest a concept I was struggling with. Galleries and how I was a big chicken at facing them. My friends were poking me pretty hard too at my self imposed short comings in the art world. I don’t think they really understand the art world and how it functioned. How it functions in a circle. I thought it would be funny to put the joke right out there. So I did. We all had a laugh. Again, when you’re not cool or have the right degree or you don’t have the look(whatever that is) and you know before hand these strikes are already against you, sometimes fear consumes you. Fast forward to the soon to come verbal thrashing I would receive for showing “garbage” work and fear won. I only retell these stories as they come back to the forefront when I review them. That’s the cool thing about art. It takes you places and evokes memories. I can easily say I know better now. With time and wisdom I realize shouldn’t have been afraid. I shouldn’t have listened and should have persevered against the circle.So the chicken today serves as a different reminder to be strong and believe in yourself in spite of adversity. Don’t be a chicken. Another watercolor for today .A good friend asked to see more so I’m sharing a second print from the forgotten watercolor series. I was having fun with the interplay of shapes and colors when I did these. What I found curious today was even after all this time I find this work to be strong. The colors are soothing and you get lost in all of it .It still works.I was discussing these works with another artist and the gallery owners harsh criticism. It was what it was. You can’t understand someones motivation. Upon more reflection I had a thought Maybe they are garbage. Absolute rubbish. They don’t win awards nor get recognized. They aren’t in a home. Unknown to the coolest circles of the art world. And who the hell am I? Just another artist. But guess what. Doesn’t matter. I had fun making them. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
