19th century model of a Chinese garden with pavilions, made from wood, metal, kingfisher feathers, pearls, and ivory. Dimensions: 59(h) x 62(w) x 46(d) cm. Acquired by the V&A in 1880 from the India Museum which was part of the East India Company, this model shows imaginary building structures. These large rocky landscape scenes dotted with pavilions were often produced for Chinese export to the west. Unusually, this example is almost entirely inlaid with kingfisher feathers rather than the customary carved ivory.

a study in drowning by ava reid
What is a mermaid but a woman half-drowned, What a selkie but an unwilling wife, What a tale but a sea-net, snatching up both From the gentle tumult of dark waves?

happy birthday, @enviies !
you think, as you walk away from le cirque des rêves and into the creeping dawn, that you felt more awake within the confines of the circus. you are no longer quite certain which side of the fence is the dream.

slavic mythology: “The older she grows, the farther she walks. It is a good thing the world is round and she is fond of walking in circles or else she might disappear across three times nine countries in the thirtieth tsardom!”

“Everyone has some kind of debt. Such is life. Debts and liabilities, obligations, gratitude, payments, doing something for someone. Or perhaps for ourselves? For in fact we are always paying ourselves back and not someone else. Each time we are indebted we pay off the debt to ourselves. In each of us lies a creditor and a debtor at once and the art is for the reckoning to tally inside us. We enter the world as a minute part of the life we are given, and from then on we are ever paying off debts, To ourselves. For ourselves. In order for the final reckoning to tally.”
