Sworn to Devotion: Chapter 4 - Part 2
>> Returns to his horse and continues his search.
Tumblr media
(Art by @lovelyladylavie)
Leo blinks as Cassandra disappears into the trees, his mind trailing behind reality.
After a few seconds, it finally catches up. “...Ooookaaaay.”
He turns around and heads back to the mountain path. His brother and the princess are still missing, and unlike Cassandra he can’t waste time goofing around in a forest.
He reaches the road and finds his loyal steed nibbling on some clover that managed to grow in the terrain. After offering his horse a more filling snack of oats, Leo swings back on the saddle and resumes his search.
A couple more hours pass with no sign of them. Or of anyone. He hasn’t encountered any search party, traveler, or merchant. It’s just been Leo, his thoughts, and his trusty steed.
However, as he rounds a bend in the path, he notices two figures in the distance. They’re too far away for Leo to make them out, but he still sits up straight and urges his horse to trot faster.
The two figures suddenly stop, pausing for only a few seconds before darting into the forest. Leo’s brow furrows and he nudges his horses into a gallop, dust flying behind them as they race to the spot where the mysterious duo disappeared.
Leo slows his horse down and hops off, drawing his odachi as soon as his feet touch the ground. He slowly creeps into the forest, each step cautious as his eyes scan his surroundings.
A disturbance in the leaf litter catches his attention, and he briefly stops to analyze the trail. He narrows his eyes—the tracks are a strange mixture of sloppy and discrete.
Leo tightens his grip on his sword and follows the trail, keeping his breath quiet and steady. Every muscle in his body is as tight as a coiled, compressed spring, waiting for the right moment to unleash all the pent-up energy.
He follows the tracks until they abruptly end, with no indication as to what happened to the mysterious duo. Leo looks around, searching high and low for any sign of disturbance.
Nothing.
But they can’t be too far away.
The blue-clad knight narrows his eyes and bites his lip. He doesn’t relax, remaining completely still as he listens to the forest around him. Aside from a few birds chirping in the distance, it’s quiet.
The sound of a snapping twig has Leo reacting before he even processes the noise, whipping around at lightning speed. His odachi collides with a familiar titanium bō, and the blue-clad knight gasps.
“Donnie?!”
Both twins disengage, drawing their weapons back and taking a moment to breathe.
“Jeez, dude. I thought I was about to get got.” Leo resheathes his sword before catching his brother off-guard with a bone-crushing hug. “Thank goodness you’re alive!”
“G-ack! Ahem, well, it’s good to know we weren’t being pursued by someone who meant us harm.” Donnie returns the hug, albeit awkwardly. “We’ve had too many close calls.”
Leo pulls back from the embrace. “Right! The princess! Where–”
“Right here!” Princess April emerges from her hiding spot behind a hollow tree, dusting herself off as she approaches.
Leo quickly bows. “It’s good to see that you’re alright, Your Highness.” He stands up straight again, a mischievous grin on his face. “I hope my brother here didn’t bore you too much with a monologue of his inventions.”
Donnie squawks, glaring at his brother with righteous rage before April interrupts him with a smile. “Actually, Donnie’s tech sounds impressive. I’ll have to see if Prince Raphael can give me a tour of his lab the next time I visit.”
Leo blinks, mildly shocked that she called his brother by his nickname. Without any honorifics.
Oblivious to what she just said, April moves past the brothers, motioning them to follow. “Though my father’s probably having a conniption over my absence, so we better get going. Sir Leonardo, do you have a horse? My legs are killing me.”
“Yes, Princess!” Leo confirms as he jogs to catch up with her, Donnie following. “He’s yours as soon as we get back.”
“Woohoo!” April exclaims, throwing her arms up in celebration.
As they walk back to the path, Leo’s able to take in more of April’s appearance. The dress she was wearing the day prior is completely missing its skirt, instead wearing a pair of black pants. She also has on a pair of boots that are too big for her, and a strange green bat is strapped to her back.
Strange.
Curiosity gets the better of Leo as leans over and whispers to Donnie… >> “What happened to her dress?” >> “Where did the green bat come from?” >> “So... she's calling you Donnie?”

Sworn to Devotion: Chapter 4 - Part 1
>>Readers choose the Cha-Cha Slide
As you watch Donnie and April walk down the road, your vision blurs and you feel pressure against your temples. Focusing on the duo becomes harder and harder, forcing you to close your eyes for some reprieve.
The pressure goes away instantly, and when you open your eyes again, you’re in a different section of the mountain pass—Donnie and April are nowhere to be seen. However, you spot a certain blue-clad slider making his way into the mountain range on horseback.
What’s he up to?
Tumblr media
(Art by @lovelyladylavie)
Leo rides along the road at a slow pace, lips tugged downward, brow furrowed, and shoulders slumped. He looks around, scanning the road and the trees alongside it, looking for any sign of the princess and his brother.
But there’s not a soul in sight.
He groans, rolling his head backward and closing his eyes.
This is going in the books as one of the worst moments of his life.
After Donnie and Princess April disappeared yesterday, the entire entourage descended into chaos. Fingers were pointed, insults flew, and blame was tossed around like a hot potato.
It wasn’t until the voice of Leo's Captain boomed over the chaos and demanded order that everyone shut up. With the Old York Captain by his side, he made it known that if they prioritized these silly, childish blame games over finding the princess, the punishment would be severe.
Everyone cooperated after that.
The entourage split up, with some guards remaining with the carriage while teams were sent up and down the road, searching for the missing princess. Two small groups were also sent into the forest to look for her.
Leo was about to join the search when his captain pulled him aside, along with one of the human lieutenants. Instead of aiding in the search, both were instructed to make haste back to April’s kingdom to inform the king of the kidnapping and request more soldiers.
Together, Leo and the other human—who was introduced to him as Cassandra—raced off toward Old York on their fastest steeds.
Everything after that was a blur, but Leo distinctly remembers how furious the human king was. His threats to make Terrapathia pay for losing his little girl left Leo restless, prompting him to leave the Kingdom of Old York at the crack of dawn to aid in the search.
He needs to find the princess and his brother.
But so far his search has been fruitless, with no pretty princess and no boastful brother in sight.
He sighs again, slipping the reins into one hand while he fishes out a snack from his pouch. He’s not quite hungry, but he needs to do something to stay sane.
Just as he’s about to stuff a biscuit into his mouth, the snapping of a branch catches the slider’s attention. He brings his horse to a stop, looking off the side of the road.
He dismounts, giving his steed a quick pat on the shoulder before approaching the edge of the forest. He draws his sword and steps off the path, slowly weaving his way around the tree trunks and scanning his surroundings.
Nothing seems out of the ordinary. Just a regular forest, the leaves undisturbed, and no distinguishable marks on the tree trunks.
With a heavy sigh, Leo relaxes and moves to resheath his sword.
“WHO GOES THE–oh. It’s the blue one.”
The slider shrieks, swinging the tip of his sword toward the mysterious figure. That is until he recognizes his human counterpart, and he groans and lowers his sword once more.
“Cassandra, what the hell! I should be asking you that.” Leo sheaths his sword, quirking a brow at her. “I take it you’re not here on a nature walk?”
The woman, who had lunged out from her hiding place in a fighter’s stance, stands up straight and folds her arms behind her back. “AFFIRMATIVE! I am here to find the princess and the purple turtle, who you CLEARLY are not! I set off before the break of dawn, leaving NO STONE UNTURNED!” To emphasize her point, she flips a boulder, baring its muddy underside to the sky.
Leo pauses. “Wait. How did you get out here so fast? I didn’t see you in the stables at all.”
Cassandra blinks, then shrugs. “We must have just missed each other.”
“Okay, sure, but question. Where is your horse?” Leo makes a show of shading his eyes and peering at the forest around them.
She opens her mouth to answer, then freezes, eyes wide. “I–shit!”
She’s off before Leo can get a word in edgewise, screaming into the air. “I must retrieve my steed before she is TORN TO SHREDS by a forest beast! I will MEET UP WITH YOU LATER!”
Leo… >>Follows Cassandra. >>Returns to his horse and continues his search.

Leo… >>Returns to his horse and continues his search.

Chapter 3: Alternate Routes
Hey y’all!
Doing another post where I detail all of the potential alternate routes this story could have taken for Chapter Three! Reading this post is NOT REQUIRED for the enjoyment of the story. This is just a fun selection of what-ifs you can entertain yourself on. These what-ifs are also “half-baked” in the sense that I didn’t have any concrete plans for them. Just rough ideas of where I could take the story if a certain option won.
This chapter didn’t have too many critical decisions/pivot points that had immediate consequences, but I hope deciding on what direction the story would take was interesting to y’all! :3
End of Chapter 2: If you recall the end of Chapter 2, you were deciding between two colors as April drifted off to sleep: Green and red. This was another vote that thwarted my attempt to injure Donnie! If y’all had voted red, the Foot Clan members would have found him and April, and he would have been injured in the following scuffle until Mira arrived. But alas, Donnie manages to remain unscathed another day lol.
Part One: This decision would not have changed much long-term. If April immediately trusted Mira, the POV would have switched to Donnie and he would be a lot more resistant to accepting Mira’s help. But the trio would have ended up at the cabin regardless.
Part Two: This decision on whether Donnie sleeps in the bed or on the floor would have impacted Donnie’s health. If the other option won, Donnie would have stayed up until he could no longer keep his eyes open before collapsing on the floor for a few hours of sleep. This would have impacted his ability to defend April later down the line, as he would be fatigued from not getting enough sleep. However, April managed to bully him into sleeping in the same bed and he was able to get a good night’s sleep! :D I also expected the winning option to win anyway because it's a classic trope that no one can resist lol.
Part Three: Like Part One, this would not have changed too much long term. Instead of Donnie spooning April, Donnie would have woken up to discover that their limbs were tangled together like two octopi. It would have made it exceedingly difficult for Donnie to escape from April, and he’d be stuck until she started to stir.
Part Four: If Donnie had tried to escape the bed, April would have woken up pre-maturely and he wouldn’t have had the chance to admire April’s beauty (or have some existential crises). April would have also been a bit more cranky with him over the fact he interrupted her beauty sleep.
Part Five: Oh this decision was quite critical, however since the events/consequences of this decision have not come to pass, I cannot provide any information on it just yet. Sorry! You’ll just have to wait and see what’s in store for Chapter 4. >:3c
However, I think it’s important that I talk about the chest! If the description of the chest sounded familiar, you would be correct! This chest was first seen in the Chapter 1, Part 5 poll. However, since the option with the chest didn’t win, April didn't get her infamous bat weapon early on in the story. The weapon would have come in handy if April and Donnie had engaged in any fights during their escape down the mountain earlier in the story. Thankfully, y’all played it safe (whether intentionally or on accident), so the bat wasn’t necessary. But… the bat might be needed going forward. Who’s to say... :)
Part Six: The consequences of this vote were also quite critical, but since I haven’t released the next part of the story, you’re going to have to wait and see what happens.
And there you have it! This chapter was a lot more chill than the previous one, and y'all are enjoying the journey.
Cannot promise the next chapter will be chill tho. >:3c

Sworn to Devotion: Chapter 3 - Part 6
>> Outside the Mountain Pass
Tumblr media
(Art by @lovelyladylavie)
Donnie chews his lower lip.
The coastal town would be the safest option if it wasn’t for the fact the princess’s kidnappers could teleport. The purple-clad knight isn’t convinced that they’re not being followed either. Their adversaries could just be lying in wait for the perfect opportunity to strike once the witch is gone.
The mountain pass also runs a risk, but there is a small possibility that April’s entourage could be nearby. Reuniting with the guard would be ideal, especially if the black-clad ninjas try to kidnap April again.
“We’ll go to the teleportation spot near the Mountain Pass.” Donnie nods resolutely. “Since our mystery kidnapper group also has teleportation capabilities, I think it would be advantageous to put us closer to trained allies rather than civilians who could lose their lives. Princess April, is that ok?”
The princess gets up from the bed. “Sounds like a solid plan to me.”
Mira frowns. “You don’t know who was pursuing you, princess?”
The duo shake their heads as April responds. “Nope! We just know they're persistent.”
The older woman hums. “They’re called the Foot Clan. They used to be a small fringe group, causing trouble and committing petty crimes across various towns. But they’ve been growing in number, and no one knows what their plans are.”
Donnie blinks and stands up straighter. Mira’s intel is concerning. If anyone knew about their existence, they should have informed the king or the royal court.
April seems to share the same opinion as she places a hand on her hip. “This is the first time I’ve heard of them. Does the royal court know?”
“They will now!” Her boisterous laugh causes the other two to jump. “Oh, they’ve just been nuisances up to this point. Petty theft, shoplifting, trespassing, disorderly conduct, the works. But kidnapping a princess?” Mira leans towards them. “The princess engaged to the Crown Prince of another kingdom? Oh, now that will get the King’s attention.”
“Sure hope it does,” April mutters, “I don’t want to play the damsel in distress role again anytime soon.”
“Well, just in case the Foot Clan tries to give you any more grief–” Mira waves her wand, and a chest with green paint peeling away from the weathered wood appears on the floor of the cabin “–the other witches and I have a gift for you.”
Donnie tilts his head curiously at the chest. “You know magical items are forbidden in April’s kingdom, right?"
“Well, I ain’t gonna be a Princess of Old York for much longer.” April steps in front of her knight and takes Mira’s hand in hers. “Thank you for the gift, Mira.”
“You’re most welcome, Your Highness,” The witch says with a cheek-dimpling smile on her face, “I hope you like it.”
The purple-clad knight watches as the princess dips down to open the chest, leaning over her to see the chest’s contents as the lid is lifted.
April gasps, “Oh my god, no way!”
Before he can inquire what’s inside, April lifts a green bat into the air. “Now I can clobber anyone who dares to cross me!”
Donnie shoots the witch a look, one of his drawn-on eyebrows lifted high on his forehead.
Mira waves her hand. “Gentry told us the princess wanted something to defend herself with.”
“And now I can!” Despite the small space available inside the cabin, April is already testing out her weapon, swinging it around with such practiced ease that it catches Donnie by surprise.
“Are you trained, princess?” He asks, watching her curiously.
“Well, not officially. But Gentry and a couple of knights taught me a few things while my dad wasn’t lookin’.” April turns to Donnie, planting the wide end of the bat on the floor and leaning on it. “I know juuuust enough to give someone a piece of my mind.”
“Blunt weaponry can be difficult to master, as they require more force and precision to inflict significant damage,” the knight comments as he rubs his chin with his hand, “I am curious, but I hope I don’t see your skills in combat anytime soon.”
April rolls her eyes with a smile on her face. “I’m sure we’ll be fine, Dee.”
Donnie hums, but he isn’t confident. He won’t relax until April is safe within the walls of her own castle.
“Well, we’re wasting daylight my loves!” Mira claps her hands together. “How about we have a quick breakfast and then get going?”
After a quick meal of seasoned salami, crackers, and cheese, the duo gather their remaining items before taking the witch’s hand. Sparkling pink tendrils swirl around them once more, and soon they find themselves surrounded by several large boulders back in the forest.
“You can exit through there,” Mira points out the small dirt path that leads out of the sheltered circle, “The road that connects the two kingdoms will be downhill, should only take fifteen or so minutes to get there.”
“Thanks again, Mira,” April says, giving her a nod. “I really owe you one. Is there anything I can do to thank you for your help?”
The witch waves her hand. “Oh dear, you don’t need to do anything. Everything you do for Gentry is more than enough!”
“You sure?”
“Positively sure! Now, you two better get going. Wishing you both the best of luck!”
With that Mira flicks her wand and she’s off, pink magic and leaves from the forest floor swirling around her. Runes appear on the boulders as well, glowing bright pink. When the dust clears, the symbols fade from the boulders and the witch is nowhere to be seen.
The duo look at each other before following the small dirt path out of the boulder ring and making their way downhill. It’s comfortably quiet except for the singing of songbirds and the crunch of leaves underneath their feet.
“Will you and your entourage leave as soon as I’m back in my kingdom?” April asks, looking at Donnie as they walk together.
“That decision is up to my Captain,” Donnie starts as he scans the forest around them, “But I hope he gives us a day’s rest.”
“I hope so too! I’d like to give you and your fellow knights a proper thank you, regardless of whether my father approves of it. How does a banquet sound?”
“We always appreciate a good meal. Fair warning, a significant portion of the yokai guards are carnivores, so they'll be expecting meat to be a significant portion of the meal.”
“Well, fish is plentiful around this time of year, so as long as y’all don’t object to seafood I’m sure we can provide that.”
The mere mention of fish has Donnie’s mouth watering. “Oh, I’m sure it will.”
They make it back to the path and look around, but there’s not a soul in sight. For Donnie, that is both a blessing and a curse. He’s still on his own for now, and he prays that none of the Foot Clan’s henchmen are nearby.
He steps closer to April. “Let’s make our way to your kingdom on foot. Hopefully, we run into our allies or a friendly face.”
April nods, not saying much as they begin walking.

Sworn to Devotion: Chapter 3 - Part 5
>> Donnie decides to remain in bed.
Tumblr media
(Art by @lovelyladylavie)
Donnie bites his lip, debating whether he should slip out of bed and risk waking the princess. But she looks so peaceful, her chest gently rising and falling with each breath, like small waves lapping at the edge of a lake’s shore. All of the tension in her shoulders from the previous day has been washed away as well, her muscles relaxed thanks to a good night’s rest.
He can't bring himself to disturb her restful slumber.
So he relaxes, trying his best to get comfortable as he lets April sleep for a little bit longer. He steals another look at Mira, making sure she’s still asleep.
He doesn’t want the embarrassment of someone else witnessing this.
Once he’s positive the kind witch is still asleep, he turns his attention back to April. He watches her silently, eyes scanning every feature on her face.
He’d never admit it, but he finds her… beautiful. For a human, at least. Freckles dust the bridge of her nose and cheeks like stardust, and despite the lack of suitable lighting in the cabin her skin almost glows. Her rosy red lips—slightly parted as she sleeps—look impeccably soft. So soft he almost wonders what it would be like to kiss–
Donnie has to stop himself from physically recoiling so he doesn't wake her.
What is wrong with him?
Sure, April has grown on him since the ambush yesterday. He certainly likes her more now that he knows she’s not the stuck-up, judgmental human princess he thought she was. He now knows that her quiet, distant behavior during her diplomatic visit was because of her father and the fact she had no say in the decisions affecting her life.
He adores her kind and intrepid spirit, and he’s elated by her interest in his scientific inventions. But… he knows that he cannot be anything more than a knight to her.
She’s engaged to his brother, Prince Raph, the Crown Prince of Terrapathia.
Not him, a mutant who was specifically made to usurp the throne.
Any fleeting crush or feelings he has for her must remain that way.
Short-lived.
But… maybe he can savor this. For just a little bit longer.
So he stays still, keeping his breathing as calm and steady as possible so April can continue resting. His gaze never once leaves her, as if trying to etch the memory of this moment into his brain so that he’ll never forget it.
As the morning light filters in through the window, April and Mira start to stir. Before either is truly awake, Donnie slips out of bed. He glances at both of them, making sure neither noticed before he walks over to where he left his gear the previous night. He starts systematically putting back on his armor, his shell turned toward the princess.
Mira yawns, “Oooh, I feel pretty well rested. How about you two?”
“Perfectly fine,” Donnie responds flatly, shoving down any lingering feelings before continuing. “The bed was quite comfortable.”
“Yeah, the bed’s comfier than the one in my bedroom,” April agrees, sitting up and stretching her limbs while yawning.
“We should leave soon,” Donnie states as he slips on his boots and tightens the straps. “Neither kingdom can afford for April to be missing for much longer.”
“Indeed.” Mira agrees as she stands up from her chair. “Well, I can take you to two locations. Both are within the Princess’s territory, but they each have their risks.”
The purple-clad knight turns to the witch as he adjusts his gauntlets. “What are our options?”
“Well, the first is teleporting to just outside the mountain pass,” Mira begins, “The guards of both kingdoms would be expecting you to potentially show up there.”
“But so would our mystery kidnapper group,” Donnie comments.
“Exactly,” Mira agrees, “So my second option would be to teleport you to one of the coastal towns. No one would be expecting you there, but I don’t know if it would spark any rumors. You know what Old York’s royal council is like.”
“Yeah, that’s a difficult choice.” April slips out of bed and retrieves her shoes from wherever she tossed them the previous night. “What do ya think, Sir Donatello?”

Sworn to Devotion: Chapter 3 - Part 5
>> Donnie decides to remain in bed.
