What happens when feral cats are brought in? Can you tame them, or do you have to send them somewhere else?

Bella: Since cats are my favorite animals, Alfred lets me work with them when I’m on duty. It takes a lot of time working with the feral cats that come in, sure, but I don’t mind doing whatever means necessary to help them all eventually warm up to people. In the end though, it always seems to work out.

Bella: Of course, Lovino likes to come in during his shifts to help me with whatever he can, including socializing some of our furry friends.

Lovino: And I know that can make it harder on Bella to get some of the cats socialized faster. Hell, I dunno, I kind of wish someone who knew what they were doing could come work with Bella and help with cats more, but Kiku mainly works with dogs, Alfred seems to be all over the place, and Amelia gets pretty busy with the front desk along with watching her kid.

Amelia: Really, it’s been a little over four years since that happened, I’ve already had my kid.

Who's Arthur married to? I noticed his ring just now!

Arthur: I suppose it would be proper to introduce my wife to the lot of you. This is Marianne, and while we do tend to have our moments where we argue like cats and dogs so to speak, she can be rather lovely. As well as quite supportive of me and my work, to my surprise.

The only reason I say that though because we used to hate each other when we were younger.

Which animal was at the shelter for the longest?

The problem was pretty much everyone who came in to adopt a dog always wanted a puppy or a younger dog instead. So Charlie was here for about two years, until finally, he grew so old and sick, we didn’t have any choice but to put him down. It was really sad, because he was a really sweet dog who just didn’t really get much of a chance to live his last days at an actual home. I kind of wish now I had let him stay with me for the remainder of his time.

Have there been emergency situations that happened at the rescue before?

Ame: Gosh this one time, when I was pregnant with Care…

Yeah, he came over right after that. To this day I still give them both crap about what happened back then.

What pets do the caretakers have at home?

Have any of the animals gotten really attached to you?

Amelia: Alfred found him over by the dumpster whenever we were getting gas for his truck on our way back from lunch. Tigger was so friendly to us when we approached him that we just couldn’t let him stay where he was. I know he’s got his little ways of misbehaving here and there but he’s been really sweet to everyone who comes in to work or look for a pet.

Other than him though Alfred’s good at working with the animals that come in to stay while we find them a home, so I know there’s a few dogs and cats over the past few years that have really grown close to him before they were taken to their forever homes.

Who is the best at coercing the rescues that are distrustful and scared on site?

Alfred: We actually work with the police a bit when it comes to some of the animals who get a lot more aggressive when they’re distrustful.

Gilbert and Ludwig are brothers. They tend to work more with the animal control portion of the police, and they’re really good at working with animals who might bite if they feel like they’re being threatened when rescued. 

What I think is really cool is when there’s a dog or cat that tries to make a break for it, they’ll send either Ludwig’s German Shepherd Sigmund or Gilbert’s White Shepherd Falk to go after them so that way they can get ‘em in a corner and keep them there until Gil or Ludwig can get there to put the dog or cat in a cage.

Is it hard not to get attached to the rescues?

We get some of the sweetest animals that people just drop off to fend for themselves, or people just leave them here because they all of a sudden don’t want them anymore, and as much as we love animals around here, seeing that is really heartbreaking. I mean, even with some difficult dogs or cats coming in now and again, to me the longer they’re there the more chances you have to bond with them because eventually, yeah, they’ll warm up to you.

... I guess what I’m trying to say is every dog and cat that comes through here is worth spending time with and working to get them adopted.
