WIP Snippet
“I’m not his son.”
It’s true and it’s not. Dick is eighteen. When Bruce took him in, he’d been twenty-five to Dick’s nine, too young to be a father, but too responsible for his wellbeing to be called a brother. Friend, partner, brother, son – all true and none sufficient to describe what Richard Grayson is to Bruce Wayne. Their relationship is too complicated, too many years spent with too much wrapped up in each other, too much time with only each other, blurry lines and fuzzy boundaries, each the outlet for the overwhelming majority of the other’s love and loathing, affection and animosity. Even Selina could never make Bruce as angry as Dick can.

WIP Snippet
Selina loves selfishly, and she acknowledges only one Robin. Bruce might try to find a substitute Dick Grayson, might even succeed at replacing him and filling the void the loss had left in his heart, but Selina never will and has no interest in trying.
Unlike Bruce, she still has Dick. She never pushed him away. She has no need of a pale imitation.
Jason Todd is a street kid and a thief and a genuinely funny child, just the kind of person one would think she’d like, but her gut twists when she learns that Bruce is going to adopt him, and she can barely bring herself to look at him. He is sweet and clever and defiant and a replacement. No one can replace the irreplaceable. Selina resents him for even trying.
But she’s learned much from Dick and puts on a show.
She can’t and won’t pretend to care as much as she had about Dick – she doesn’t. Bruce may have come to love him outside of who he was replacing, but Selina? She’ll never teach him to pick locks or walk along banisters with him when he’s obviously lonely or laugh at his jokes when Bruce won’t. Those were things she did for and with Dick, and Jason is not Dick.
But she is friendly whenever she sees him, and if her smile is always a fraction dimmer than it is when she directs it at Dick, then who is to know? Jason Todd does not know her enough to notice, and he’s never seen her around Dick at all. She is polite and she is coolly distant, and Jason Todd does not know that she reserves polite for people she doesn’t care about, not even enough to dislike. They coexist. It is enough. And when the replacement dies, it hurts to know that sweet kid is gone.
Not as much as it hurts to see what his death does to Bruce, to Dick, to Bruce-and-Dick.
Blood rains down into the gutters that night, and for countless nights after. Bruce turns to ice, to stone, to rage and fire. Dick is a better person than Bruce or Selina have ever been, and when he returns and learns the truth, he mourns the boy who’d stolen his place with his whole heart.
Selina doesn’t see the blow, but she sees the bruise on Dick’s cheek and won’t see Bruce for another year. By the time she can even bear to look at him again, he and Dick are circling around each other tentatively once more, bound by yet another little bird. Bruce is different, now, and so is Dick. If it’s that the anger sparking between them has burnt out alone or that something has doused it, Selina cannot say. She cannot even say which she’d prefer.

WIP Snippet
“Ford quit his job, started drinking, got divorced…more to the point, he got angry. Then he teamed up with some of us. Formed a crew way worse than we’ve ever been. And he does not do it for the money, no, no, no. Think Robin Hood if Robin Hood were a Machiavellian puppet master, a persistence hunter single-mindedly devoted to taking down the rich and powerful. You cannot buy Nate Ford. You cannot escape Nate Ford. He’s smart. He’s angry. And he’s ruthless. If he thinks for even one second you’re a threat to his mission, he will not rest until he’s taken you down.”
“Why would he?” Neal asked. “I’m hardly stealing from the poor and downtrodden.”
“That’s your saving grace,” Mozzie agreed. “Between that and the aversion to violence, you’re not on the list of people he considers a threat to any of his goals. Presumably, why he called you when he needed a favour, too.”
“Ouch,” Neal deadpanned.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Major Character Death Characters: Barristan Selmy, Tywin Lannister, Robert Baratheon Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence Summary:
And what did Robert say when he saw them? Did he smile? Barristan Selmy had been badly wounded on the Trident, so he had been spared the sight of Lord Tywin’s gift, but oft he wondered. If I had seen him smile over the red ruins of Rhaegar’s children, no army on this earth could have stopped me from killing him.
Barristan Selmy took less severe wounds and stood in the throne room as the corpses were laid out before the new king.

Arianne Martell was the type of woman that, when not present, simply had to be referred to by her entire name, preferably in hushed, reverent tones. It wasn’t something Brienne had the words to describe. It wasn’t that she was smart – which she was. Arianne Martell was brilliant and had graduated at the top of her class, seemingly barely needing to ever crack open a book to do it. It wasn’t that she was intimidating, which she somehow managed to be just with even stares from intensely dark eyes, even though she was barely over five feet tall. It wasn’t that she was pretty – which she wasn’t, because to top off everything else she had going for her, Arianne Martell was stupendously beautiful, with long dark curls spilling down her back and a perfect complexion. But when Arianne Martell walked into a room, every single eye was immediately drawn to her, and Brienne somehow knew that that would have been true no matter what she looked like.
Brienne herself drew looks for her height and bulk. Sansa caught people’s attention through her pretty face and confident poise. But Arianne demanded respect and settled for nothing less. Last week, she had offered Sansa a blood orange mimosa at the same time as Margaery Tyrell had offered a Bellini made with Highgarden peaches. Sansa had automatically accepted Arianne’s glass, not realizing until she’d taken it and Margaery’s eyes had grown round and stunned that it had meant turning down Margaery’s offering.

Because I guess I’m doing this now...
There was something oddly unsettling about the Lady Nym.
A bastard, Brienne remembered, but called a lady nonetheless. And how could she not be? She was tall and elegant, dressed in silk even while travelling, well-mannered and charming to the serving girls. There was nothing about her lovely face and pretty smiles that would be out of place in any castle.
But she travelled alone with the kind of easy confidence of someone that knew no one could touch her, even though this war had already killed kings in the safety of their own halls and the mothers of now penniless orphans and her own father.

How do you guys feel about the word dreamed vs dreamt? Because I find myself using both, with the one I choose depending on whether the main point of the sentence is what the dream is about (in which case I go with dreamt) or that the subject is dreaming (in which case I go with dreamed). Which might be weird. I don’t know.

Ahhhh yes continue the Rhaegar and Rhaenys story! One of my absolute faves you did such a brilliant job with characterization ❤️
Oooh, I’m so glad you liked it! Noted, I’ll keep working on some additional stuff for it. :D

Since I guess this is my writing blog now...should I expand that fic I wrote about Rhaegar and Rhaenys into a loosely plotted series of one shots? Because I had this idea about Rhaenys and Daenerys going to Summerhall and Sarella visiting that I thought would be kind of cool. (Said fic can be found here.)

“Which, I feel, is totally fine just as a completely opposite opinion is totally fine by me as long as you don't lash out on me and other people of the same opinion like a kid who doesn't get his favorite toy and then starts screaming.” Dude...you’re in my comment section! I’m not the one complaining about anything!

Seeing as I’m suddenly very angry about ASOIAF and I don’t want that to take over this blog or the one I use most frequently...I made a new one here to post some stuff I’m mad about. First post: it would have been a much better story, even if almost everything else had stayed the same, if Rhaenys Targaryen took the place of Daenerys Targaryen.

This is completely not relevant to the usual stuff I post on this account, but one of the reasons I made it was to have a place to share fics about sexuality that I was uncomfortable associating with my main, so...how about actual discussions of it.
I find it interesting how frequently I see comments dismissing the emotional difficulty of asexuality when it comes to relationships. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen stuff like, “people have every right to want sex in a relationship and not stay in relationships with people that don’t” - a perfectly innocuous statement in and of itself - in response to asexual people discussing being sad about the difficulty of maintaining relationships. The problem arises when the same people saying these things are also talking about how it’s a form of emotional blackmail to put someone in a situation where it’s a choice between sex and a break up. Because while there’s nothing technically wrong with either statement, the implication of the two of them together ends up being the sort of “you’ll change your mind” thing that people rightly rail against in many other contexts.
I personally don’t really understand romance. I have no real understanding of what distinguishes a friendship from a romantic relationship. I find dating a lot more trouble than it’s worth and don’t really get it, so I mostly avoid it. But you know what I do get? The feeling of loneliness and wanting to make some form of emotional connection with another person. So the idea that that emotional connection might not matter in the end because what’s more important than all the effort is the willingness to have sex is really fucking scary.
