I didn’t want to voice my opinion on this because everyone is up in arms about this but I feel like I’ll explode if I keep it in so I’m just gonna say it here. It is so fucking hard as an average to moderate to curvy to plus sized actor to get auditions or be taken seriously let alone book jobs in the entertainment industry. You are under pressure to lose weight ALL THE TIME. Unfortunately a lot of people’s experience is when they lose weight, they book more jobs. Everyone who is saying “Abby’s size doesn’t matter” have you ever been denied a job or an audition or an on-set experience because you were a bigger built person? It sucks, and it’s painful. People are disappointed because they thought they would see a bigger woman on-screen as this huge iconic character, and now the creators are saying that her build wasn’t even integral to this storyline. That’s incredibly hurtful to hear not only as a fan of the show but as someone who would be classified as a bigger woman or person. The tone deaf responses I’ve seen to people expressing their upset about this is astonishing. People are allowed to be upset about that representation of a bigger body type for a woman onscreen being taken away.

The show is still going to be good! Kaitlyn is going to absolutely crush it! She is a fucking amazing actor. It will be one of the biggest shows of the year! They are going to win NUMEROUS awards most likely. That’s not why people are upset, they’re upset because there are so many people out here now, fans and content creators, rallying to say that body size doesn’t matter for this character to groups of people who have constantly been defined only by their body type. That’s invalidating and upsetting, people are going to voice that. Abby is a character that may have helped a lot of people feel less alone or feel more seen in a sea of media that only broadcasts a very specific body type. A lot of women or young girls see themselves in the figures we see in the media. IT MATTERS. So acting like it doesn’t is a disservice to not only yourself but to the media you’re watching. I feel like people are not actually listening to what people are upset about concerning this and it’s pissing me off. You can be critical of a TV show and still enjoy it, that’s how we grow as people and creators. Be kind to people, take a breath and understand where they may be coming from, and chill out.

I understand that the show is an adaptation, and I don’t understand the hate for Bella Ramsey, as someone who’s played both games a hundred times, I thought Bella did a good job portraying Ellie in season 1, the tough Ellie who’s also still just a kid, was great.

Yes, Abby’s physique is not realistic in real life, but it’s almost like there wasn’t even a try. I have no doubt in my mind that Kaitlyn Dever is a great actress but where’s Abby?

Abby in the game was a tank, she looked like the type to survive the apocalypse, but you expect me to believe that this Abby is Isaac’s top scar killer, and survives all Abby went through? Same with Bella Ramsey in this season, this is the girl who’s gonna kill half of Seattle, an unborn child, hunt Abby down with nothing but a map and again survive everything Ellie went through.

I understand it’s an adaptation and it’s not the game. Yes Maria also is blonde and pale in the game but that didn’t make a difference to her character. The details that are missing are some of the big reasons people love Ellie and Abby so much.

I’m still going to watch the season don’t get me wrong, but I’m sorry that is not TLOU 2 Ellie and Abby.
